How do I set up formatted table feeds in EventKeeper? or What is an EKFEED?
+
How do I set up formatted table feeds in EventKeeper? or What is an EKFEED?
+

There are 2 methods of using EKFeed with EventKeeper.

1. The easiest and most common method is to include the code for an EKFEED FORMATTED TABLE in the source code of your page.  Adding this snippet of javascript code will automatically draw a table of events on the page wherever the code is added.  This table will be automatically updated with the events from your EventKeeper calendar.

Here is a sample of an EKFeed Formatted Table:  Case Memorial Library  and Manhasset Public Library

To create this type of EKFeed:

  • Login to Eventkeeper
  • Click Admin Page at the top of the Eventkeeper Calendar of Events page
  • In the section called "Multipublishing" you will see the EKFEED
  • Click on Create to create a new feed

From there, you will be provided with the following steps:

  • Select the Data Retrieval and Data Display parameters (data display defaults to FORMATTED table)
  • Click on the Create Sample Display button
  • Check the results in the Sample Display (REPEAT AS NECESSARY)
  • Click on the Create Snippet and Javascript file button
  • Copy the snippet into the source of your web page.

2.  The second type is called EKFEED ARRAY VARIABLE. With this method, EventKeeper again creates a javascript file, but in this case, it contains just event data in a javascript array and the displaying of the data is up to you, using javascript code.

This method gives you much greater flexibilty to display the data however you want but requires that you are able to create the javascript code to do so.

Here is a sample of an EKFeed Array Variable:  Port Jefferson Free Library

The steps to creating this type of EKFeed are similar to those above but when you create the sample page, you should look at the source code for that page and use the javascript code there as a starting point for when you develop the javascript code to include in your page that will display the events.

Change the URL to HTTPS to make the feed secure

Formatting an Array Variable Feed

EK has a source code editor for Array Vairiable feeds that lets you edit the code and see the changes before publishing to your site.  Once you make the feed and create the display in the editor (as detailed above) you will see a small blue Format an Array Feed link.  This opens up an editor with the source code on the left and the display on the right.  Once you edit the code and hit save, you can see the chnages on the right.  When finished, the top of the page has 2 javascript snippets.  You need both of them.  One is the event data and the other is all of the styling.  Copy and paste both of them into your website.  They should look like the links below

Example:

<SCRIPT language="javascript" src="http://www.eventkeeper.com/ekfeed/KN_TEST.js"></SCRIPT>
<SCRIPT language="javascript" src="http://www.eventkeeper.com/ekfeed/KN_TEST_DISPLAY.js"></SCRIPT>

Why isn't my EventKeeper feed showing any new events?
+
Why isn't my EventKeeper feed showing any new events?
+

Sometimes when you add or edit events in EventKeeper, they do not show up on your feed right away.  This has to do with refresh rates.  The feed has to refresh and the website that has the feed also has to refresh.  Sometimes if you wait awhile, events will show up.  However, you can also do a manual refresh.  The steps are below:

1. Login as admin and go to the admin page

2. Scroll to the Multipublishing section.  This is what we call feeds.

3. Choose any of the refresh buttons and click it.  This will immediately refresh all feeds.

What if I have done this and my feed is blank?

That might be a security issue.  Have you recently made your site secure?  If so, our feeds are not automatcially chnaged to secure with your site.  The fix is usually easy.  Each feed on your site has a URL.  Just edit the URL and make sure that the beginning starts with HTTPS://.  It should look like the example below (which is an RSS feed):

https://www.eventkeeper.com/ekfeed/KN_EVENTS.xml

Still blank?

Please conact Plymouth Rocket and we can troubleshoot the issue.

What is a Super Feed?
+
What is a Super Feed?
+

Overview

Super Feeds are the next step in Multipublishing.  Multipublishing is what we call the idea of getting extra mileage out of putting your events in an EventKeeper calendar.  To recap, our EKFeeds have been around for years, allowing you to easily publish your upcoming events on another web page.  And our implementation of RSS feeds allows your visitors to receive updates of events to their own pages/readers/browsers, etc..

Now Super Feeds come into play.  For these, typically, a third party wants to collect events from multiple EventKeeper calendars and make that combined information available to the world.  This could be a library association aggregating the events of its members, an ILS that wants to include event information in the catalog search, or a separate organization such as Library Thing or Burbio which offers a local search option to its visitors.

The really exciting aspect of this trend is that you are able to get the word out about your upcoming events to a wider audience and it involves no extra work on your part.  You just continue to use EventKeeper and now more and more folks will have a chance to learn about the nifty things you are doing.  To be clear, unlike EKFeeds, individual libraries don't create Super Feeds.  Super Feeds are created by Plymouth Rocket and used by a third party

Super Feed Event Selection

If we just assumed that all of the public events on your calendar were good candidates for publishing as part of a Super Feed, we'd be done.  But, after considerable thought and discussions with our clients, we realized that you might not want ALL of your events published to the larger community.  For example, suppose you have a Story Time at your library that is very popular.  And you have all the attendees that you can handle just by advertising in the library lobby and putting the information on your web site.  Of course anyone can see the event on your EventKeeper calendar but, realistically, that's mostly your patrons that go to your web site, which is less likely to include the people that live in the neighboring towns.  If this is the case, you might want exclude this Story Time event from being included in any Super Feeds created by a third party.

  • First, you can specify that all events should be included in any Super Feeds.
  • Or you can give yourself the option to include most events and reserve the right to exclude some.
  • Or you can decide to exclude most events but reserve the right to select individual events to be included.
  • Or you can decide that you want none of your events to be included in any Super Feed collections.

This first level of configuration is done by an EventKeeper administrator as part of the Organization Information.

Super Feed Filtering Configuration

First, you should set the Super Feed Filtering configuration for your organization, login in as an administrative editor and go to the Admin Page.  In the Multipublishing section there is a new row for Super Feed Filtering.  Click there and follow the directions for configuration.

After you have set the configuration for your organization, if you have made a choide to include some of your events, the Super Feed Filtering option will be available when you edit an individual event.

Adding an EventKeeper feed to a Wordpress site is pretty easy.  First we make an EKFeed in EK and then we add that feed into the Wordpress site using a widget.  This feed is made using Javascript and a text widget.

Note: You can also use a basic RSS feed from EK and add it to your site using a Wordpress Widget.  To do that, simply ask us to make an RSS feed and use one of the many rss widgets in Wordpress.  If you want more editing control, use the method below.

  • Select the Data Retrieval and Data Display parameters (data display defaults to FORMATTED table, choose Array variable)
  • Click on the Create Sample Display button
  • Check the results in the Sample Display (REPEAT AS NECESSARY)
  • Click on the Create Snippet and Javascript file button
  • Copy the snippet into the source of your web page.
