Computer Class: Social Life Online, Creating Online Materials

excel logoIntermediate and Advanced computer users are invited to this series of six classes focused on creating materials for living life online. Registration is required and will open on April 12.

This class will be presented by volunteers from Saheli and is sponsored by the Friends of the Thomas Crane Library. The schedule for the classes is as follows:

  • Class 1 (April 26): Introduction to Social Media Platforms and Security
  • Class 2 (May 3): Introduction to Facebook Settings and Sharing
  • Class 3 (May 10): Using Facebook Groups and Pages
  • Class 4 (May 17): Introduction to Linkedin Profiles, Settings and Sharing
  • Class 5 (May 24): Using Linkedin Jobs and Interests, and Writing Articles
  • Class 6 (May 31): Recap / Review and Graduation

Students obtain a certificate of completion at the end of this session. Due to limited computer seats, patrons are encouraged to bring a laptop for additional seating or personal convenience. Class is free. Registration is required. Students are expected to have the following skills, which will be the focus of the winter Saturday sessions:

  • Open and log in to a Mac or a PC
  • Navigate the Task Bar, Quick Launch Tool Bar, Desktop, & Folders
  • Set up a Wifi Connection and understand how to use Airplane mode
  • Open and use a web browser (Google, Firefox, Internet Explorer)
  • Be able to personalize your background, lockscreen, colors, & sounds
  • Understand how to set the region, date, time, and language for your computer
  • Have a basic understanding of security and privacy and how it relates to your camera, location, and virus protection
  • Be able to manage basic system settings including display, notifications, apps, and power
  • Manage updates and simple security
  • Setup and use email, including: managing account names, passwords, mail profiles, composing email, adding addresses, using the signature tool, sending, reading, and replying to email, and adding and accessing attachments
  • Open and save documents
  • Use the Microsoft Ribbon
  • Type and save a letter
  • Use personal devices such as Bluetooth, printer, and a mouse pointer
