Old Ship Coffeehouse off the Square
8:00 PM - 11:00 PM
Geoff Muldaur at Old Ship Coffeehouse off the Square -- The legendary Geoff Muldaur will perform at The Old Ship Coffeehouse off the Square on Sat., May 17, at 8 p.m.
One of the great voices and musical forces to emerge from the Cambridge folk, blues, and folk-rock scene, Geoff has composed scores for film and television, even garnering an Emmy.
He was a founding member of the Jim Kweskin Jug Band, which performed during the 1960s and ’70s. He also collaborated with then-wife Maria Muldaur and other notables (Bonnie Rait, Jerry Garcia, Eric Von Schmidt . . .)
The New York Times noted that Geoff “succeeds not because he copies the timbre and inflections of a down-home African-American [performer] but because his voice - reedy, quavering, otherworldly - is so unusual that [his music] becomes little more than a context, a jumping-off point.”
British songwriter Richard Thompson says: “There are only three white blues singers, and Geoff Muldaur is at least two of them.”
For more information, visit
www.geoffmuldaur.com.
The Coffeehouse off the Square is at the Old Ship Church Parish Hall, 107 Main St., in Hingham Square just up from the Loring Hall Theater and on the MBTA’s 220 bus from Quincy Center. Admission for this concert is $12 at the door (sorry, no reservations).
The concert begins with an open mike at 8 p.m. Beverages and desserts are 50 cents. Net proceeds benefit the Unitarian-Universalist Service Committee. For more information or to volunteer (free admission!) call 781-749-1767.

'King' Kelly Base Ball Bash
6:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Kick off the Hingham Historical Society's '08 Vintage Baseball Season at 507 Main Street, the home of Baseball Hall of Famer “King” Kelly.
Who was King Kelly? At the height of his career in the 1880s, hitter and base stealer extraordinaire Mike “King” Kelly was hired by the Boston Bean Eaters for the unheard of sum of $10,000. In a demonstration of sincere baseball enthusiasm (some might say folly), the town of Hingham then presented Kelly with a home on Main Street, followed later that year by a carriage and two horses. To the bitter disappointment of Boston and Hingham fans, Kelly only stayed for a year before he left town to join the Cincinnati Reds. Even so, it was long enough for Kelly to make a colorful impression. He was known to promenade through town with a Japanese valet and a little pet monkey on his shoulder.
Historical Society members, and current owners of the “King” Kelly House, Moira and Cameron Congdon, will host this grand event. Enjoy live music, beer, barbecue, and a chance to meet sports writer and King Kelly biographer, Marty Appel, who will be on hand to sign copies of his book Slide, Kelly, Slide. Other attractions include raffles of sought-after prizes, including, Red Sox tickets, fresh lobsters, baseball artwork, hand-made bats and more. You may even catch a glimpse of King Kelly himself. Tickets are $35 each, $40 the day of the event. Check our website for sale locations, www.hinghamhistorical.org.
