Selection: The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris by David McCullough
McCullough's latest is about Americans, most of them in the arts, who were drawn to Paris between 1830 and 1900. His research, as usual, is staggering. His interpretations impressive. The expatriates of the "Belle Epoque" saw the city as "muse", as they strove to elevate their talents, whether it be painting, sculpture, writing, or medicine.

Evening Book Discussion
7:00 PM
This month's discussion will tie-in with the "Big Read Newport 2012", a community-wide reading event. The focus is on author and playwright Thornton Wilder.
Choose from these three works:
Theophilus North, Our Town, or Bridge of the San Luis Rey. Try the novel, Theophilus North, set within the so-called "nine cities of Newport", or read his famous play that uses small-town New Hampshire characters to ponder life's bigger meanings. Some readers may be drawn to the diverse stories of the ill-fated folks on the bridge of the San Luis Rey. Or read all three! Join us for the discussion. And look for the many related events at the library and around town for the celebration of the "Big Read Newport 2012".
Sponsored cooperatively by The Preservation Society of Newport County with The Newport Public Library, with participation by other leading Newport organizations.
Contact Pat LaRose at the library for more information.

Selection: Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson.
Change is coming to Edgecombe St. Mary. Major Pettigrew is old school, yet he forms a bond with Pakistani shopkeeper, Mrs. Ali. Meanwhile, his ambitious son Roger comes to town with a sleek American girlfriend. There is a lot going on in the pages of this novel. Simonson handles it all with great aplomb, and her Major, with his keen sense of both honor and absurdity, offers the perfect lens to view contemporary England.

Selection: Heat: an amateur's adventures as kitchen slave, line cook, pasta-maker, and apprentice to a Dante-quoting butcher in Tuscany by Bill Buford
The title pretty much says it all. The only thing to add is that this memoir of a wannabe cook is very funny.
In July the Evening Book Discussion members traditionally go out for a pay-your-own-way dinner with our book discussion. Call the library for details.
