You are invited to attend the International Literacy Day event on Thursday, September 8 from 12:00 – 1:00 PM at the Fukaya Room A, Fremont Main Library.

UNESCO established September 8th as International Literacy Day to promote literacy worldwide. It is estimated that 875 million of the world’s adults do not know how to read or write (nearly two-thirds are women), and that more than 110 million children lack access to education.

At noon, we will be showing a documentary titled, “Cleo’s Story.” This Pivot TV’s Secret Lives of Americans episode follows the story of Cleo, a loving and supportive mother from Alabama who has always encouraged her children to pursue their educational goals—all while struggling to share her own literacy issues with her family. After the documentary, there will be time for those attending to read a favorite passage, poem or children’s book in celebration of International Literacy Day. You are invited to read a short passage.  Our literacy staff will be there to read our favorite piece of writing. Learners, friends and family are cordially invited to listen or participate.
