Kids today grow up in a digital world with potential for communication, collaboration, and creation. Yet we face challenges with ethical issues that arise from their use of technology, such as cyberbullying, inappropriate sharing, and plagiarism. Digital citizenship is an essential 21st century skill in which youth think critically, behave safely, and participate responsibly in a digital world. In this session, join Common Sense to learn about three elements necessary to create a positive culture around digital citizenship. First, learn how to teach students digital citizenship skills, covering eight key topics. You’ll hear ideas on how you can use a free Digital Citizenship curriculum. This also includes our News and Media Literacy Toolkit and our Social and Emotional Learning Toolkit. Second, learn how to engage parents around managing their children’s technology use and helping kids make smart choices, including how to host a successful parent event, sharing helpful tips and advice, parent communication ideas, and more. Finally, hear practical next steps to build the capacity of your staff to integrate digital citizenship resources throughout your community.
