This presentation will focus on the Greek hero Odysseus, or Ulysses, and examine the way he is interpreted in the writings of Homer, Sophocles, Virgil, and Dante. These canonical interpretations will be compared and contrasted with Madeline Miller’s depiction of the character in Circe. Through the examination of his character, the relevance of Odysseus to today’s society will be explored as well as the broad appeal that he maintains millennia after his inception.

Presenter Michael S. Geary is Associate Professor of English and Writing Center Coordinator at Bristol Community College
