Name Mother Daughter Book Discussions facilitated by librarian Barbara Buckley
Start 2017/07/26 at 07:00:00 PM
End 2017/07/26 at 08:00:00 PM
Description (old)

Has there ever been a more precious, yet complex relationship than that of a mother and a daughter?  Whether the journey has been perfect or fraught with stress, the best way to understand this emotional minefield is through literature.

We will explore this intimate kinship in a reading group series.  Beginning on Wednesday, July 19, the group will enjoy the film “Postcards from the Edge,” based on the autobiography of Carrie Fisher and her love/hate relationship with her mother, Debbie Reynolds.

The week following, on Wednesday, July 26, discuss The Mare by Mary Gaitskill.  This novel probes the existential question—what is a mother?

Elizabeth Strout’s slim but substantive novel, My Name is Lucy Barton will be discussed on Wednesday, August 9.  It plunges right into the estranged relationship of Elizabeth and her mother, a woman she has not seen in years.

To end the series on Wednesday, August 30, the group will explore the wonderful Amy Tan’s book The Valley of Amazement.  From The Joy Luck Club to The Kitchen God’s Wife, Tan is at the epicenter studying the phenomenally complicated mother-daughter love affair.

Register online (on the July 19 form) or by calling the Reference Dept. at 466-8055, ext. 218/219.

Please call early if you’d like us to interloan any or all titles in the series. It takes 1-2 weeks for interloan books to arrive at the library, as well as your time for reading!!
