.Community gathering on the Common to experience the moving words of Frederick Douglass' famous speech, "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?" Then the gathering will explore in discussion groups the meaning and relevance of his words to each of us today, particularly as they relate to race, gender and immigration.

The program is part of the Rising Towards Unity, a series of events that seeks to raise awareness of the influential role history of slavery continues to play in the United States as we struggle to achieve a more equal, just, and peaceful society. Rising Towards Unity is a project of the Friends of the Grafton Public Library, the Grafton Historical Society, the Grafton Public Library, and the Unitarian Universalist Society of Grafton & Upton.

This event will happen rain or shine (if it does rain, we will relocate to Apple Tree Arts - One Grafton Common, Grafton MA.)
