In the first volume of the author's series on the naval adventures of Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin, the two meet as Aubrey receives his first command, the armed brig Sophie. Aboard is James Dillon, his first officer and an Irish rebel. Aubrey convinces Maturin, a sometime intelligence agent, to join him as his ship's surgeon. Aubrey is intent on making his reputation and gaining prizes. The action climaxes when the Sophie takes on the heavily gunned Spanish frigate Cacafuego. Books & Authors
