End 2012/11/05 at 03:15:00 PM
Description (old)

Join us for a brief MLS update, business meeting and the presentation of our new strategic plan.

Following the business meeting, we’ll focus on social media and libraries.  Our keynote speaker is David Gerzof Richard.

Marketing Recalibrated:  Your Library at the Core of the Community

Social media has quickly become one of the most popular forms of communication and is increasingly being used by a wide variety of enterprises and organizations. Libraries are no exception to this phenomenon. From social networking to blogs to “Text a Librarian,” libraries have capitalized on new mediums of communication to provide informational, educational, and editorial resources to people everywhere. Most prominently, a number of libraries have launched “Save the Library” campaigns via social media in response to budget cuts. Activists have taken to sites like Facebook and Twitter in order to spread awareness about the value of libraries and encourage citizens to fight back against library closures. Pages have been set up to raise money on Facebook, hashtags have been created to encourage discussion on Twitter, and events have even been staged at public libraries and posted on YouTube to generate awareness. Although many of these strategies have been effective, libraries can leverage social media even further to market themselves as important community staples. Here we’ll explore the ways libraries have been using social media and expand upon the future of libraries and their use of social media.

Panel: Stories from the Field

Dave will facilitate our afternoon panel of librarians who enjoy the challenges and successes of using social media to communicate.  Panelists include:

·      Mary Anne Antonellis, M.N. Spear Library, Shutesbury

·      Rachel Costello, Pentucket Regional High School, West Newbury

·      Nancy O’Sullivan, d’Alzon Library, Assumption College, Worcester

Our closing speaker is Jennifer Koerber.

Living in the Future: Libraries Supporting the Next Wave of Cultural Evolution

At the start of the 21st century, technology is changing our daily lives in ways not seen since the Industrial Revolution. From Facebook pages to library Fab Labs and digital publishing repositories, libraries are facilitating, contributing to, and supporting these revolutionary changes in how we create, communicate, and collaborate. Koerber will look at current examples and consider next-step possibilities in the library world and beyond.

A light breakfast and lunch are included.  The event is free of charge but you must register in advance.
