ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Joy B Benusa
I was born in Pittsburgh and have lived here for most of my life, the last 30 years in Oakmont along the Allegheny river. In 1981 I graduated from Thiel College with a degree in Fine Art specializing in printmaking and I discovered that I loved making woodcuts. It is the definition of low tech and that is why I find it so appealing in this fast paced world we live in. My career has been spent in the horticulture field. The basic principles of design, color, and texture are applied with a plant palette and I get paid to work in beautiful spaces. It also helps to have wonderful clients who love their gardens as much as I do. In artistic terms I am surrounded on a daily basis with inspiration. Over the last two years I have been working on a hybrid type of woodcut/painting. Instead of creating a print, I began painting the images carved into the wood on the block of wood itself. The result is a tactile image with depth and a more painterly look than the usual woodblock print. My subjects are drawn from the gorgeous landscape of western Pennsylvania. Our lush green woods, rough hillsides, and twisted river valleys are absolutely striking. You just have to slow down and look.
