Before the young Washington set the world on fire in the rocky glen, merchant-trader William Trent began building a fort at the Fork of the Ohio in Spring of 1754.  This event not only set the staging ground for the French and Indian War, but also gave rise to the humble beginnings of Pittsburgh!
