Written by a recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature and the U.S. Medal of Freedom, The Winter of Our Discontent tells the story of Ethan Allen Hawley, a clerk in a Long Island grocery story once owned by his family. No longer members of the upper class, his wife is restless and his teenage son wish for material comforts that the family can no longer afford. In a moment of moral crisis, Ethan sets aside his scrupulous standards as a the novel explores the line between private and public honesty and offers a penetrating insight into the American condition.
