The art of stone carving has been practiced for thousands of years, leading to some of the most enduring achievements of all time: The Great Pyramids, the Parthenon, the cathedrals of Europe – even our own Island cemeteries. Yet few people today have any idea of what traditional stone carving is, what the tools look like, or how they are used to transform stone. Chris Pellettieri will share the tradition and stories of his apprenticeship at the Cathedral of St. John The Divine in Manhattan in the late 1980s, as well as some of the commissions he has done and training programs he has run in the decades since.

Chris Pellettieri is a traditional stone carver and founder of Pellettieri Stone Carvers’ Academy. He most recently gave a demonstration of his craft in the Barn at the MV Museum.
