The state of California looms large in the history of mysteries. Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon, set in San Francisco, and Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep, set in Los Angeles, essentially began the "hard-boiled" tradition of American mysteries. A few years ago, we read books set in The City of Angels; now it's time for mysteries set in The City by the Bay.

The Art of Detection [2006] by Laurie King
San Francisco detective Kate Martinelli receives a lesson in detection from the master sleuth himself when she investigates the murder of a Sherlock Holmes aficionado, who may have been killed for a century-old manuscript purportedly penned by Holmes.

Copies of the book are available at the Info Desk. Discussion moderated by Carole Shmurak, author of the Susan Lombardi Mysteries.
