In December we will be discussing Maizon at Blue Hill by Jacqueline Woodson.
Maizon must leave her best friend, Margaret, and Grandma behind on Madison Street when she gets a scholarship to boarding school. There are only five black students at Blue Hill, and she's the only seventh grader among them.
But Blue Hill is beautiful, and many of the good things Grandma wanted Maizon to find are there-such as excellent teachers, small classes, and a friendly roommate. Yet something is missing. What is it that makes white people strange to her, that makes the other black students threatening and safe at the same time? Maizon faces questions she's never asked herself before-about racism, elitism, friendship, and family.
