Furious Hours: Murder, Fraud, and the Last Trial of Harper Lee by Casey Cep

The Reverend Willie Maxwell was a rural preacher and rumored voodoo priest living in Alabama. During the 1970s, five of his relatives died under mysterious circumstances. The Reverend had taken out several life insurance policies on each of them and was the prime suspect in their deaths. A savvy lawyer helped keep the Reverend out of jail, but he was murdered at the funeral of his 5th victim. At his trial, the vigilante murderer was represented by the same canny lawyer who had helped the Reverend. Harper Lee, the revered author of To Kill a Mockingbird, sat in the courtroom during the trial, hoping the write a true crime book about the Reverend and his murder. Journalist Casey Cep has written a page-turning mash up of true crime, biography and literary history that reminds us that truth is stranger than fiction.
