In this 3-person, live performance, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt shares some of her most private and meaningful moments - her lonely childhood; her joyous courtship and marriage with her fifth cousin, Franklin; her devastation at Franklin's love affair with her own social secretary; her resolve to make him president after his polio diagnosis; her involvement in his presidency; and her eventual triumph at the United Nations.  The Delvena Theatre Company visited the library last winter with their hit show, Introducing Julia Child.  "Truly Eleanor" is part of our Abington Reads 2017 celebration.  Abington Reads is a "One Book, One Town" program; this year's title, Lost in Shangri-La is set during the World War II era.

Registration is not required for this program; space is available for 60 participants on a first-to-arrive basis.  Questions may be directed to Library Director Deborah Grimmett at 781-982-2139 or via email at ablib@ocln.org.  This program made possible by State Aid to Public Libraries funding.

Author Mitchell Zuckoff will speak at the Abington Public Library on Monday March 27 at 7:00 PM about his historical work, Lost in Shangri-La.  Zuckoff is a professor of journalism at Boston University and a former special projects reporter for the Boston Globe, where he was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for investigative reporting. His book, Lost in Shangri-La, is a must read story from the Pacific Theater during the closing days of World War II.  The book chronicles the harrowing adventures of the survivors of a 1945 plane crash in what was then Dutch New Guinea.  This tale of the Greatest Generation features U.S. Army servicemen and WACs who showed grit and determination as they dealt with injuries, and the members of an isolated primitive tribe who had never before encountered people from the outside world.  BookPage reviewed Lost in Shangri-La as a “movie waiting to be made.

Lost in Shangri-La is the 2017 selection for Abington Reads, our community reading program. The book will be available for purchase at the conclusion of the event and Mr. Zuckoff will personally sign copies.  Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Library.   Registration is not necessary for this program which will be held in the Copeland Room and is funded by State Aid to Public Libraries.   Space is available for 75 participants on a first-to-arrive basis.   Questions may be directed to Library Director Deborah Grimmett at 781-982-2139 or via email at ablib@ocln.org.

Ready… Set… Lego! Our library Lego Club is back for the school year, so get ready to use your imagination and build, build, build! Lego Club is for children in kindergarten and up, but we will have Duplos available for any younger friends who wish to create. Children attending the club must be accompanied by an adult. This program is from 3:30-4:30 and no registration necessary. A BIG thank you to all of the community members who donated the supplies that make this club possible.
