Union City Library's Wednesday Night Music Series presents:

Les Gwan Jupons -Music from the Caribbean!

Les Gwan Jupons play vintage party music from the French, Spanish and English-speaking Caribbean . . . biguine and mazurka from Martinique and Guadeloupe, calypso from Trinidad, cumbia from Colombia, mento from Jamaica, bolero from Cuba. Les Gwan Jupons translate music from rare Caribbean recordings of the 1930s to ’60s to the context of a contemporary acoustic jazz ensemble, with instrumentation inspired by the biguine bands of Martinique dancehalls in the 1930s. The band is named in French Creole for the puffy skirts traditionally worn by women at Carnival celebrations.

Donna Marie’s delightful memoir is full of vivid and detailed adventures. She wraps the story of her family with history and folklore as well as family recipes, pictures and travel tips.

“Il Circolo is a reunion story, the rediscovery of family and roots. It’s the real dolce

eating and shopping, you’re in for a romp of a read. Magnifico!”
– Mark Greenside, author of I’ll Never Be French (No Matter What I Do)

A retired educator and college administrator, Donna Marie has long roots in the Bay Area. Her grandparents immigrated from Liguria, a coastal region of northern Italy, at the turn of the last century and her grandfather founded the Oakland Scavenger Co. around 1920 with five other men.
