"Ghosts of Mississippi"

Rating: PG-13; for a strong scene of violence and racial dialogue

Run Time: 130 min

Release Year: 1996

Director: A Rob Reiner Film

Summary:

In 1963 civil rights leader Medgar Evers was murdered in his own driveway. For 30 years his assassin has remained free. Alec Baldwins stars as a dedicated young trial lawyer, and Whoopi Goldberg stars as the widow of renowned civil rights leader Medgar Evers in the true murder story--Ghosts Of Mississippi. On June 12, 1963, an assassin's bullet kills Medgar Evers. But nearly 31 years pass before his killer faces justice when Attorney Bobby DeLaughter (Baldwin) risks his career and his marriage to reopen a case nobody believes he can win. And though her goal has seemed hopeless, Myrlie Evers (Academy Award winner Goldberg) remains undaunted in her decades-long quest for a murder conviction against Byron De La Beckwith (James Woods--Casino, Nixon), her husband's killer. Together, Evers and DeLaughter beat the odds and rewrite history.

"Akeelah and the Bee"

RatingPG

Run time: 112 min

Release Year: 2006

Director:  Doug Atchins

Rating: PG; for some language

Summary:

Eleven year-old Akeelah Anderson's life is not easy: her father is dead, her mom ignores her, her brother runs with the local gangbangers. She's smart, but her environment threatens to strangle her aspirations. Responding to a threat by her school's principal, Akeelah participates in a spelling bee to avoid detention for her many absences. Much to her surprise and embarrassment, she wins. Her principal asks her to seek coaching from an English professor named Dr. Larabee for the more prestigious regional bee. As the possibility of making it all the way to the Scripps National Spelling Bee looms, Akeelah could provide her community with someone to rally around and be proud of -- but only if she can overcome her insecurities and her distracting home life. She also must get past Dr. Larabee's demons, and a field of more experienced and privileged fellow spellers.Written by Shannon Patrick Sullivan

"Remember the Titans"

Rating: PG

Run time: 114 min

Release Year: 2000

Director:  A Jerry Bruckheimer Film

Rating: PG; for some language

Summary:

Set in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1971, the fact-based story begins with the integration of black and white students at T. C. Williams High School. This effort to improve race relations is most keenly felt on the school's football team, the Titans, and bigoted tempers flare when a black head coach (Washington) is appointed and his victorious predecessor (Will Patton) reluctantly stays on as his assistant. It's affirmative action at its most potentially volatile, complicated by the mandate that the coach will be fired if he loses a single game in the Titans' 13-game season. The players represent a hotbed of racial tension, but as the team struggles toward unity and gridiron glory, Remember the Titans builds on several subplots and character dynamics to become an inspirational drama of Rocky-like proportions.
