Synopsis

An Indian teen in France goes to work for his father's culinary adversary in this drama based on the bestselling novel by Richard C. Morais. Put young Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) in a kitchen, and he's bound to emerge with a dish that will dazzle. When Hassan's family is forced to move from their native India, his Papa (Om Puri) relocates to a peaceful hamlet in Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France. Determined to give his new neighbors a little taste of home, Papa decides to open an Indian restaurant in the village, and names it Maison Mumbai. Meanwhile, across the street at the traditional French restaurant Le Saule Pleureu, uptight proprietor Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren) doesn't exactly welcome the competition. When Madame Mallory ignites a bitter feud that quickly escalates, the only hope for a peaceful resolution lies in Hassan's talent for French haute cuisine, and his growing affections for Mme. Mallory's pretty young sous chef Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon). Subsequently impressed by Hassan's undeniable culinary talents, Mme. Mallory agrees to become Hassan's mentor, in the process providing the perfect creative environment where his unique fusion cuisine can thrive. Lasse Hallström directs a film produced by Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Juliet Blake. Author: Jason Buchanan

Moving of the Niles Palms

California Nursery Company and

The Panama-Pacific International Exposition

For the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco over 100 palms were
purchased from the California Nursery Company in Niles.

Presenter Janet Barton is a true history detective. Her fascination with the palm trees of Niles
started with a photograph of giant palms loaded on several rail cars waiting to go to San Francisco.
How were these huge trees moved before our bay bridges and modern transportation?
The answer to this horticultural mystery gives us a unique and colorful Fremont connection to the historic fair.

Union City library's Wednesday Night Music Series presents:

        Little Charlie's Organ Grinder Swing!

For over 30 years Grammy nominated guitarist “Little” Charlie Baty led the well known and much loved Sacramento based blues group 'Little Charlie and the Nightcats', performing at jazz and blues festivals through out the country and Europe. He combines a strong Charlie Christian influence with a jump blues background, adding in shades of traditional jazz, gypsy jazz, Brazilian music and even polka to bring an energetic, whimsical approach to the guitar.  He has shared the stage with great blues artists such as Big Mama Thornton, Albert Collins, Floyd Dixon, John Lee Hooker, and these days frequently tours with Mark Hummel’s Golden State/Lone Star Revue, and performs with his own groups Organ Grinder Swing and the Little Charlie Caravan. This group also feature's Lorenzo Farrel's greasy Hammond B-3 organ and J. Hansen's swinging drums.
