Teens will select one paperback from the library's selection each month, read the book, and then prepare a brief discussion about the book. Participants are asked to not ruin any major plotlines/give spoilers or ruin the ending of the book. After the meeting, teens get to keep the book they've selected!

You are invited to attend the International Literacy Day event on Thursday, September 8 from 12:00 – 1:00 PM at the Fukaya Room A, Fremont Main Library.

UNESCO established September 8th as International Literacy Day to promote literacy worldwide. It is estimated that 875 million of the world’s adults do not know how to read or write (nearly two-thirds are women), and that more than 110 million children lack access to education.

At noon, we will be showing a documentary titled, “Cleo’s Story.” This Pivot TV’s Secret Lives of Americans episode follows the story of Cleo, a loving and supportive mother from Alabama who has always encouraged her children to pursue their educational goals—all while struggling to share her own literacy issues with her family. After the documentary, there will be time for those attending to read a favorite passage, poem or children’s book in celebration of International Literacy Day. You are invited to read a short passage.  Our literacy staff will be there to read our favorite piece of writing. Learners, friends and family are cordially invited to listen or participate.

Hypertension is also known as "the silent killer" because the symptoms usually don't show up until they cause a heart attack, stroke, or organ damage. If your blood pressure is high (140/90 or over) or if you want to make sure it doesn't get that high, you can make some lifestyle changes.  In these classes you'll learn about preventing an dmanaging hypertension, as well as monitoring your blood pressure.

Classes meet on Wednesdays for four weeks, September 14-October 5 from 10:00am - 12:00pm, and are taught by the Alameda County Public Health Department. Registration is required.  Please call 510-284-0640 or stop by the information desk.

Can't make it to these classes? Call 510-383-5185 to find register for the next available class!
