The Da Vinci Code (PG-13)

Sunday, July 24, 2016 at 2:00 p.m.

(PG-13) 149 minutes.  Starring: Tom Hanks, Audrey Tautou, Ian McKellen, & Alfred Molina

When respected American religious symbology expert Dr. Robert Langdon is summoned to the Louvre by the French version of the FBI, led by Captain Bezu Fache, he soon discovers that he is the #1 suspect for the murder of a historian Langdon had been scheduled to meet with.  Assisted by a French cryptographer and government agent named Sophie, Langdon is challenged to decipher a chain of cryptic codes and puzzles, all the while trying to stay ahead of Fache's lawmen in a chase through the Louvre, out into the Parisian cityscape, and finally across the channel to England. Can Langdon and Sophie decipher the nature of a secret dating back to Leonardo Da Vinci and earlier before those responsible for the historian's murder add them to their hit list?

Dublin Reads is a one city, one book program inviting the community to read and discuss the same book.  This July we will be reading The Boys in the Boat: the True Story of an American Team's Epic Journey to Win Gold at the 1936 Olympics.  Much of the book relates  the impact of the Great Depression upon America and its people.  But what was happening in and around Dublin in the 1930s?  Come listen to Steve Minniear, President of the Dublin Historical Preservation Assoication, as he describes the Depression in Dublin and the story of one very unlikely person who tried to make a difference to the poor in San Francisco:  Lois “White Angel” Jordan.  On her own initiative she set up the White Angel soup kitchen to feed thousands along the waterfront in San Francisco from 1931-1933.  Exhausted from her work but determined to do more, she started a farm near Dublin and Pleasanton to grow food for the poor and give them a place to work.

Kirsten Weiss worked overseas for nearly twenty years in the fringes of the former USSR, Africa, and
South-east Asia. Her experiences abroad sparked an interest in the effects of mysticism and mythology, and how both are woven into our daily lives.
Now based in San Mateo, CA, she writes genre-blending steampunk suspense, urban fantasy, and mystery, (there's usually some paranormal element to them) mixing her experiences and imagination to create a vivid world of magic and mayhem. She has published 11 books -- both through traditional and indie routes.

misc_teens 10:30 AM  -  12:30 PM Talking to Your Teens About Sex Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

Talking to kids about sex, communication and relationships can be a frustrating and awkward experience for everyone involved. Most adults have great difficulties discussing these topics with other adults, much less their teens.

Parents will learn how to convey solid information about sexuality and other crucial topics in a way that teens will respond to positively.  Topics will include: why have a discussion about sex with your teen; preparing yourself for the “talk”; how to start the conversation with your teen; teen’s motivations for being sexual; sexual consent; alternatives to intercourse; a paradigm for making sexual decisions; and “starting at A and ending at Z” problem solving.

Dr. Bryna Barsky, Ph.D. will lead the workshop.  She is a licensed Clinical Psychologist, Sex Therapist and Couple’s Therapist.  She is employed by Kaiser San Jose as a psychologist and sex therapist, and is adjunct faculty for three universities in the Bay Area.
