Please join us for a free screening of the documentary "Bully" hosted by the Newark Library and Tiburcio Vasquez Health Clinic. Following the screening, we will facilitate a discussion/Q&A on bullying in our community. Teens will also be able to take the Bully Project Pledge, stating that they are taking a stand against bullying.

"BULLY is a beautifully cinematic, character-driven documentary. At its heart are those with huge stakes in this issue whose stories each represent a different facet of America’s bullying crisis. Filmed over the course of the 2009/2010 school year, BULLY opens a window onto the pained and often endangered lives of bullied kids, revealing a problem that transcends geographic, racial, ethnic and economic borders. It documents the responses of teachers and administrators to aggressive behaviors that defy “kids will be kids” clichés, and it captures a growing movement among parents and youths to change how bullying is handled in schools, in communities and in society as a whole."

This event is for students entering grade 6 and above, and registration is not required.

AUGUST -  Movies To Make You Feel Good!

TEA WITH MUSSOLINI (1999, PG)

Florence, Italy, on the brink of WWII: it was a time of social unrest and, of course...afternoon tea. Prewar Florence is the place to be for any proper British woman who relishes culture and the arts. These ladies have everything they could ever want or need, including a promise from dictator Mussolini himself that not even the imminent world war will impose upon their lifestyle. But when it appears that his word is not kept, and these expatriates who chose to stay in Italy instead of seeking refuge in their own country are in trouble, it takes a young outcast boy and a brazen American woman (Cher) to keep them in the high life and out of harm's way.

Saturday September 5. 2015

3 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

We've all had horrible experiences that have shaped
our lives--destroying some aspect of ourselves, allowing a new self to
emerge. For this reason, many of the best moments in memoirs happen
when something terrible happens to the narrator. This workshop will
tease out these moments, giving advice on pacing, building scene and
character, and cultivating a strong narrative voice.

Sidney Poitier portrays a teacher assigned to a tough inner-city high school in To Sir, With Love. Unable to find work as an engineer, Poitier accepts a teaching post in London's East End slums. To reach his sullen, rebellious students, Poitier throws away his textbooks and endeavors to reach them as human beings--and as the adults they're going to become. The sweetly sentimental finale amply displays the vocal talents of Lulu, who trills the title song. Based on the novel by E. R. Brainwaite, To Sir, With Love was one of the biggest moneymakers of 1967.
