misc_none 7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Ice Age Fossils of Fremont Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) was retrofitting their water pipes that go through Fremont. These pipes eventually supply San Francisco with their water supply. Since the pipes crossed the Hayward Fault in the Warm Springs District in Fremont, they were excavating a vault that could withstand the movement.

As they dug through the strata, they found bones. Some were recent (Mission Era) and some were far older. The first recorded fine of late Pleistocene Fossils (Rancholabrean) were found.

These fossils will be on display at the Children's Natural History Museum starting June 3.  Come listen to Dr. Blueford talk about these fossils and the connection to the Irvingtonian Fossils already on display in the museum.

misc_none 2:00 PM  -  3:00 PM Nature Calls: Walking Your Local Parks Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

Our monthly series of events, First Thursdays, continues with this presentation about the many beautiful local parks and trails that provide opportunities to improve your physical and mental health and enjoy the natural surroundings. We know that we should have some regular physical exercise to maintain our health and wellness. Some of you may do regular walks from your house and around your neighborhood. But are you aware of the many city and regional parks and trails nearby that can provide you with a new experience by walking in a beautiful place to explore nature?

There are many testimonials of park and trail users about how walking in nature improved their physical health and/or mental health. Walking in a place removed from the hustle and bustle of our daily lives can help in reducing stress and also help in the mental healing process of recovery from loss of a loved one or other significant event.

Our guide is Richard Guarienti, a long time volunteer for the City of Dublin and the East Bay Regional Park District. Richard is the founder of the Tri-Valley Trail Trekkers hiking group and the Dublin Path Wanderers walking group.   Handout materials and some maps of the parks and trails discussed will be provided.

Do you enjoy reading and discussing books with others? Do you enjoy lively conversation about fiction and non-fiction books?  Then welcome to Dublin Library's 2nd Thursday of the Month book discussion group.    Come to the Information Desk to pick up a copy of the books to be discussed.  The book to be discussed for May will be the New York Times bestseller, "City of Women: A Novel," by David R. Gillham.  Sigrid Schröder is the model German soldier’s wife: She dutifully works every day, copes with rationing, and cares for her  mother-in-law, while ignoring the horrors committed by the regime. But behind this façade, Sigrid is an entirely woman who dreams of her former Jewish lover, now lost in the chaos of war.

June 28th: Zentangle Photo Frames with teaching artist Karen Wardell. Ms. Wardell will show us how to draw using the zentangle method, and after practicing on paper, teens will design their own patterns for a photo frame.

July 5th: Basic Photography using Sunlight! Join us for a fun intro to photography, focused on using the power of sunlight to develop prints. We'll be using a specially coated paper, called SunPrint or Nature Print Paper, to make our prints, and they set using regular tap water!

July 12th: Tri-Valley Writers Fiction Writing Workshop. Members of the Tri-Valley Writers group will be at the library to lead a class on fiction writing/creative writing for teens. During the workshop, we will discuss story structure, elements of fiction, and look over examples from popular YA fiction. There will be writing exercises and handouts, and as a bonus, students may submit 1-2 pages of writing in the weeks after the class, and receive feedback on their work. Limited to 25 students.

July 19th: Altered Books and Book Binding. Learn how to do a basic book binding technique, so you can make books on your own at home. Then we'll save books that were destined for recycling and turn them into brand new works of art.
