An Indian teen in France goes to work for his father's culinary adversary in this drama based on the bestselling novel by Richard C. Morais. Put young Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) in a kitchen, and he's bound to emerge with a dish that will dazzle. When Hassan's family is forced to move from their native India, his Papa (Om Puri) relocates to a peaceful hamlet in Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France. Determined to give his new neighbors a little taste of home, Papa decides to open an Indian restaurant in the village, and names it Maison Mumbai. Meanwhile, across the street at the traditional French restaurant Le Saule Pleureu, uptight proprietor Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren) doesn't exactly welcome the competition.

1 pm: San Francisco Chronicle Film Critic Mick LaSalle

2:30 pm Showing of Baby Face (1933)

The Castro Valley Library invites you to a special presentation by San Francisco Chronicle film critic Mick LaSalle on Pre-Code films and a showing of the 1933 classic Baby Face.

Pre-Code films were produced before enforcement of the Motion Picture Production Code in 1934. They are valued for their authentic portrayals of men and women and their relationships. LaSalle, the author of two books on the Pre-Code era Complicated Women and Dangerous Men, will give an introduction to the time period. Then we will watch Baby Face starring Barbara Stanwyck, George Brent, and Theresa Harris.  Baby Face has been called “the most ‘Pre-Code’ of the Pre-Codes” and a blunt depiction of women using sex for power.

Synopsis

The most tempting of all sweets becomes the key weapon in a battle of sensual pleasure versus disciplined self-denial in this comedy. A mysterious woman named Vianne (Juliette Binoche) moves with her young daughter into a small French village, where much of the community's activities are dominated by the local Catholic church. A few days after settling into town, Vianne opens up a confectionery shop across the street from the house of worship -- Vianne tempts them with unusual and delicious chocolate creations, With every passing day, more and more of Vianne's neighbors are succumbing to her sinfully delicious treats, but the Comte de Reynaud (Alfred Molina), the town's mayor, is not the least bit amused; he is eager to see Vianne run out of town. Vianne with the help of another new arrival in town, a handsome Irish Gypsy named Roux (Johnny Depp), plans a "Grand Festival of Chocolate," to be held on Easter Sunday.

Following the panel, join us for an informal “mixer” to enhance your contacts and knowledge of the people who are adding vitality to the local community.

Anyone interested in building or expanding a successful maker business or learning about this market niche should attend.

Rewire to Inspire:

Seeking to restore a sense of community in our technologically saturated world, Rewired to Inspire aims to form rapports across generations and allow different age groups to tap into the otherwise unrealized wisdom from each other.

"Sustained effort of your team over one year will bring some amazing results. Rewired to Inspire facilitates face-to-face meetings and is absolutely necessary in [today’s technological world]," said Bhargav Mehta, a participant at their first session. At this session, participants from all generations enjoyed a few icebreakers and exciting rounds of Pictionary.

In the future, Rewired to Inspire hopes to have its senior members share their passions and interests with their peers. The first session was a resounding success, and subsequently Rewired to Inspire’s sessions will be held Friday November 18th, 4:30-5:45 at Fremont Main Library.

This month the theme will be celebrating Diwali. Included will be  an Invocation Ceremony, Intro to Indian Epics, Cultural dance workshops, henna, crafts and a photo booth.

The Rewired to inspire group is hosting a writing contest on the "Significance of Diwali". Deadline to submit your work will be November 4th.

Please visit the website: rewiredtoinspire.weebly.com for details.

If you have specific questions please contact rewiredtoinspire@gmail.com    or call 510-371-1268.

Synopsis

Though Kate's "Type A" personality serves her well when whipping up meals in the trendy Manhattan eatery where she has made a name for herself, it threatens to sink her when she is named as the guardian of her nine-year-old niece Zoe. To complicate matters, an impetuous new sous chef named Nick Palmer (Eckhart) has recently joined the kitchen staff and his freewheeling personality seems to stand in direct opposition to Kate's unwavering perfectionism.

As the rivalry between the competitive cooks gradually gives way to romance, the lessons learned by compromising in the kitchen reveal to Kate the importance of learning to openly express herself in order to truly connect with Zoe and find romance with the good-natured Nick.

Contact: Fremont Main Library Information Desk (510) 745-1401

Location: FREMONT BRANCH - Get Directions

The town of Drawbridge grew up in the San Francisco Bay along the railroad track on Station Island, and was inhabited from the late 1800s to 1976. Now part of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, the town’s structures are sinking into the marsh. As this historic and culturally intriguing human settlement declines, many animal and plant species are thriving on Station Island and the surrounding marshes under the protection of the US Fish and Wildlife Service, including several endangered species.

An exhibit on Drawbridge, curated by the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, opens on November 28th at the Marks Center for Local and California History, 2nd floor of the Fremont Main Library.

Please join us that evening for the exhibit opening and a meeting of the Washington Township Historical Society when Cecilia (Ceal) D. Craig, PhD, President of the San Francisco Bay Wildlife Society and longtime volunteer for the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge Complex, will share history, photographs, maps, and stories about Drawbridge and its outstanding, hardy, and sometimes quirky individuals. The program will be held in the Fukaya Room on the 1st floor of the library.
