Second Tuesdays Poetry: Toby Bielawski, Samantha Kennedy & Julia Stahl
| |
Albany's Poet Laureate, Toby Bielawski, will be joined by two former students: Samantha Kennedy and Julia Stahl. Featured poets are followed by open mic.
Author of the chapbook Five Kinds of Fences (Drafty Attic Press), Toby Bielawski’s recent poetry has also recently appeared or is forthcoming in Spillway, Alehouse, Tattoo Highway, Wanderlust Review, Verse Wisconsin, Tilt-A-Whirl, and Madroad: West Coast Writers (Breadline Press). Chana Bloch has written that Toby’s poems “survey the landscapes of earth and sky and the inner landscapes of the mind with a clear-eyed curiosity." Toby teaches writing and poetry at Las Positas College, where she has run an annual poetry slam since 2003. She has just begun the second year of her term as 2012-2014 Poet Laureate of Albany, California.
Samantha Kennedy's poetry has been printed in Verbivore, The Las Positas Anthology, Occam's Razor, and The Copperfield Review. She was a featured reader at both Ravenswood and A Literary Evening at the Firehouse. She was recently the second place winner of the Donald Markos poetry prize and third place winner of the R.V. Williams fiction prize at California State University, East Bay, where she is completing her BA.
Julia Stahl’s poetry has been published in Verbivore and the Las Positas College anthology. She was a featured reader at the Ravenswood poetry series. Her poem “Gringa” was selected for the Library of Congress Community College Competition anthology. This year, she will complete her BA in Sociology at UC Berkeley. She looks forward to spending some time in the world of work before contemplating grad school.

Craft Workshop with Margo: Paper Shamrocks
| |
Fascinating forms take shape at Margo's craft workshop.
They say March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. In the middle, many people, Irish and not, will be wearing green. Most assuredly we will be folding green, and not necessarily money. Origami shamrocks! Does that qualify as multicultural? We'll also fold "Jake's Tricorn," a homegrown Albany folding method!
Free. No registration required. Drop-in's welcome!
