The League of Women Voters, in collaboration with the Albany Public Library, presents Bill Chapman, a League member and former U.S. History teacher. His presentation, "SayWhat?!  Language, History and the Common Core," explains how social studies instruction will likely change in the era of Common Core State Standards.  He will give examples from U.S. History and tell us why this will probably be a very good thing.  Those attending will also get to participate in a short U.S. History activity aligned with a Common Core standard.  Bill was invited to make a similar presentation recently at a conference of the California Council for the Social Studies.  He is currently writing a book on critical thinking, for use by U.S. History high school teachers and students, and all interested others.

Attendees will learn about the oldest bee found in amber, hexagons and centrifugal force.

Experience live honey bees, including the queen, frames of beeswax and sweet smelling honeycomb and more. Through a puppet show, we will explore the many jobs of a worker bee and learn the bee dance! Each child will receive a honey stick and their own activity book to take home. All ages welcome!

As part of Asian Heritage Month, the author of Living Treasures, a historical novel set in China, will speak about her book.

Local author Yang Huang recently released her new novel, a passionate tale of a quest for romance and justice that was a finalist for the Bellwether Prize and the INDIEFAB Book of the Year Award.

Join us to hear about the author's inspirations for Living Treasures, from pandas and China's one-child policy to the student protests that led to the Tiananmen Square massacre.

Books will be available for purchase, and there will be gifts for lucky audience members.
