If you’ve always wanted to share your love of reading, now is your chance to become an adult literacy volunteer.   As an Alameda County Library Literacy tutor, you will work one-to-one at the library teaching an adult the basics of reading and writing.  No previous teaching experience is required—simply a love of reading, some patience and a desire to help others.
 
Please note, you must pre-register for the event.  No walk-in registration will be permitted. After training you will be matched with a local student and set a time to meet at Castro Valley Library. Follow-up training and support will be provided by the literacy staff.

Open Monday afternoons from 12:30 to 3 pm and Wednesdays from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm, the drop-in Job Lab provides a quiet space for job seekers to use the library's laptops to work on employment-related tasks. During this open lab time, you can use the computers to update or create a resume, search for jobs online, or build new work skills.

Volunteers will be on hand to help with resumes, job searches, online applications and a wide range of other employment related activities. Contact: Castro Valley Library (510) 667-7900

   The Castro Valley library and two post-Graduate Science and Engineering Students are offering free High School
   and College-Level tutoring in Math, Physics, and Chemistry every Monday.  Subjects that will be covered include:

   Math: Algebra, Geometry, Pre Calculus, Analysis, Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Ordinary Differential Equations
   Physics: All High School and College Physics
   Chemistry: High school chemistry
 

No Registration or appointment necessary, however participants must be high school aged or older.

This is a follow up to the practice ACT test conducted on Saturday, 1/19/13, where those who participated in the previous test can receive and review their scores.

Those who did not take the ACT practice test are still invited to attend this program as a Kaplan representative will be on hand to offer additional test taking techniques and strategies. Both parents and students will learn how to score higher on admissions tests using key strategies, including ways to take advantage of the test format to maximize efficiency on the exam.

Ramana Vieira & Ensemble Fado Concert
 
Join us for this rare opportunity to hear traditional Portuguese Fado music performed by one of the country's premier ensembles. Ramana Vieira has been described as "The New Voice of Portuguese World Music." Ramana was born in San Leandro to Portuguese immigrant parents and has achieved international acclaim.
 
 Today's  performance includes the haunting traditional ballads and those with a modern spin. The ensemble typically includes guitar, percussion and cello.
 
The New York Times has recognized  Ramana as a singer on the forefront of the international fado resurgence. Her music has been featured in Olympics opening ceremonies and she has performed at the Grammy Awards Ceremony honoring Aretha Franklin.

No reservations are required for this FREE event, however seating limits may be enforced

Open Monday afternoons from 12:30 to 3 pm and Wednesdays from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm, the drop-in Job Lab provides a quiet space for job seekers to use the library's laptops to work on employment-related tasks. During this open lab time, you can use the computers to update or create a resume, search for jobs online, or build new work skills.

    Sutro's: The Palace at Lands End. A documentary film about San Francisco's privately owned swimming, ice skating and museum complex built in the late 19th century. Journey back in time to revisit Sutro Baths when it was in full operation. See the seven pools, Sutro Railway, Merry Way, Sutro's Cliff House, Ice Skating Rink, Egyptian Mummy Museum, plus many more attractions. A nostalgic trip back in time told by historians and the people who were there.

   The Castro Valley library and two post-Graduate Science and Engineering Students are offering free High School
   and College-Level tutoring in Math, Physics, and Chemistry every Monday.  Subjects that will be covered include:

   Math: Algebra, Geometry, Pre Calculus, Analysis, Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Ordinary Differential Equations
   Physics: All High School and College Physics
   Chemistry: High school chemistry
 

No Registration or appointment necessary, however participants must be high school aged or older.
