misc_none 6:30 PM  -  8:00 PM FRACKING and the FUTURE of PETROLEUM Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

Oil, gas and coal are natural products of the earth, and large-scale production has fueled the growth of modern civilization, but has also caused many environmental and political problems.  The risk of human-caused climate change has accelerated concern about our dependence on fossil fuels at the same time that petroleum production has surged.  This talk will focus on the reasons for the surge in petroleum production, including hydraulic fracturing (fracking) and how this has revolutionized the energy industry in a few short years. Also examined are the problems associated with fracking; economic and political benefits; the role of fossil fuels in the world today;  and alternative energy sources, and the challenges they face in displacing fossil fuels.
