misc_none 10:30 AM  -  12:00 PM Remembering 1882 Exhibit Opening - Keynote speaker Philip Choy Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

Remembering 1882: Fighting for Civil Rights in the shadow of the Chinese Exclusion ActPlease join us for the grand opening of our new exhibit Remembering 1882: Fighting for Civil Rights in the Shadow of the Chinese Exclusion Act.on loan from the Chinese Historical Society of America.

The Immigration Act of 1882 was passed to prevent people of Chinese descent from entering the United States. It had a dramatic effect on immigrant populations for decades afterwards.

The law tore families apart, drastically reduced the nation's Chinese American population, and removed the right to become US citizens.

Remembering 1882 explores the historical debate around the Exclusion Act from its origins through its full repeal in 1968. The exhibit will be on display through February 28, 2013.

Leaders from several Chinese American civil rights organizations that worked for the recent Congressional resolutions expressing regret for the exclusion laws will open the exhibit.

Historian Philip P. Choy, will launch a four-week lecture series with a presentation on the connection between the exclusion laws and the development of San Francisco's Chinatown. He will also discuss his new book, San Francisco Chinatown: a guide to its history and architecture. A book signing will follow.

Philip P. Choy was born and raised in San Francisco's Chinatown. In 1968 he was invited, with Him Mark Lai, to develop and teach the nation's first college level course on Chinese American history for San Francisco State University. He is a retired architect, an accomplished author, and a renowned expert on the history of Chinese America.

This program is part of our "Remembering 1882" series. Special events are scheduled around this theme every Saturday in January.

misc_none 11:00 AM  -  12:00 PM Genealogy Research for Chinese Americans: resources and challenges Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

Remembering 1882: Fighting for Civil Rights in the shadow of the Chinese Exclusion ActSpecial challenges exist when researching Chinese American family history. Genealogist Christine DeVillier will give a presentation on Chinese genealogical research for Chinese living in the United States.

Ms. DeVillier has been practicing genealogical research as an avocation for over ten years. She is of multiple ethnicities: Chinese, German, Danish, English, Tahitian, and possibly other European ancestry. This background, and her on-going active research into  all facets of her ancestry,  has presented her with numerous rich opportunities to search for her to explore the international dimensions of her  ancestors. These opportunities have broadened her research skills with a wide range of techniques.

Culturally, Christine identifies Chinese American, having grown up in a bilingual Taishan (Hoisanwah)/English speaking household. Christine’s research into her Chinese ancestry culminated in a visit to both of her Chinese grandparents' villages in China in 2010, during which she learned even more family history. Christine’s presentation will discuss and show the lessons and tips she has learned the hard way, so that those approaching their own Chinese American genealogical research can get a jump start. Christine will cover both traditional and electronic tools and methods. Chinese language skills are not necessary to utilize these tools.

This program is part of our "Remembering 1882" series. Special events are scheduled around this theme every Saturday in January.

misc_none 10:30 AM  -  12:00 PM By Light of Lanterns - an untold history of Monterey's Chinese Fishermen Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

Remembering 1882: Fighting for Civil Rights in the shadow of the Chinese Exclusion Act

Chinese American history activist Geraldine Low-Sabado, a fifth generation descendant of the Chinese American fishing village founded in Pacific Grove in the 1860s will present a short documentary and answer questions.

The Immigration Act of 1882 was passed to prevent people of Chinese descent from entering the United States. It had a dramatic effect on immigrant populations for decades afterwards. The law tore families apart, drastically reduced the nation's Chinese American population, and removed their right to become US citizens. Remembering 1882 explores the historical debate around the Exclusion Act from its origins through its full repeal in 1968. The exhibit will be on display through February 28, 2013.
