misc_none 1:00 PM  -  4:00 PM Digital Photography: Beyond the Basics Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

Professional photographer & photojournalist Len Cook shares his 25+ years of teaching experience in this workshop:

Let’s look at “success multipliers” in photography. What’s in a picture? What’s in a good picture? Finally, what’s in your pictures? It’s called “content!"

Camera tools assist in creating and controlling the content in your photos. Better photographers look “under the hood” at the controls of their cameras to create better photo content. Better photographers also take advantage of the rich aesthetic tools of design and composition. This class will explore these "success multipliers" found in camera menus and in traditional composition concepts.

Outside the cameras we will look at some basic but highly useful composition concepts like the rule of thirds, leading lines, balance, negative space, use of blur in depth of field, and perspective/forced perspective.

Inside the cameras we will look at automatic exposure bracketing, automatic white balance bracketing, custom white balance, time exposures, uses of the self-timer, shutter speed and aperture as tools to control blur in photos, and an introduction to the practice of HDR, or High Dynamic Range photography.

Registration is required. Sign up at the Information Desk, call (510) 795-2627 x7 when the library is open, or email Barbara at btelford-ishida@aclibrary.org.

misc_none 1:00 PM  -  4:00 PM High Dynamic Range Photography Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

Professional photographer & photojournalist Len Cook shares his 25+ years of teaching experience in this workshop:

High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging is accessible to anyone with a digital camera of any kind, even a phone camera. The HDR technique uses 3 or more differently-exposed images of the same subject. HDR imaging captures more detail in brighter highlights and in deeper shadows than is possible with a single image.

In this class we will capture an HDR image with our cameras (bring yours along). Some cameras can capture an process an HDR image with no external computer processing! Wow! Fun!

Many photographers want the opportunity to capture images themselves, and then process the final image in their own computers. Attendees are welcome to bring a laptop to the class. I will provide software for you to install and demonstrate its use.  Please note that a camera is required, but a laptop computer is helpful, not required.

We will also discuss the concept of bits per pixel. Understanding this concept is helpful in creating and processing HDR images. We will then look at images with 32 bits per pixel, 16 bits per pixel, and 8 bits per pixel. 8 bits per pixel is the internet standard for photos.

Registration is required. Sign up at the Information Desk, call (510) 795-2627 x7 when the library is open, or email Barbara at btelford-ishida@aclibrary.org.

Professional photographer & photojournalist Len Cook shares his 25+ years of teaching experience in this workshop:

Let’s shoot a product and a portrait using studio photography techniques. This class will introduce lighting concepts that are the heart of quality in studio images. We will photograph a product to make the best and simplest presentation for online selling, such as on eBay and Amazon. We will photograph a person using pro techniques to enhance the shape of the face and figure.

We will use a variety of lighting tools to demonstrate concepts such as “main” (or “key”) light, fill light, background light, backlight, edge light, and side light. In portraits we will also demonstrate lighting styles called Rembrandt, loop, butterfly, and split lighting. Throughout we will emphasize differences between “hard” light and “soft” light.

I will provide professional lighting gear including modeling lights, reflector attachments, modifiers, grids, umbrellas, soft boxes, flat reflectors, and backgrounds. The class will use flash in making images, but demonstrations will enhance understanding of both flash and constant light.

Attorney George Derieg offers 15 minute free consultation and referrals on a wide variety of issues including estate planning, family, and criminal law. He does not cover landlord tenant disputes or foreclosures.

To make an appointment, please call (510) 795-2627 x7 when the library is open. If you are not going to be able to make your appointment, please call to cancel it.

The purpose of the consultation is to determine whether or not you have a legal problem and to provide guidance on how you might be able to solve your legal problem rather than for the attorney to provide in-depth legal analysis or advice. There is no continuing attorney/client relationship formed by your meeting with a volunteer attorney, but your discussion with the attorney will be confidential.
