Union City Library's Wednesday Night Music Series presents:

Les Gwan Jupon

Les Gwan Jupons play vintage party music from the French, Spanish and English-speaking Caribbean . . . biguine and mazurka from Martinique and Guadeloupe, calypso from Trinidad, cumbia from Colombia, mento from Jamaica, bolero from Cuba. Les Gwan Jupons translate music from rare Caribbean recordings of the 1930s to ’60s to the context of a contemporary acoustic jazz ensemble, with instrumentation inspired by the biguine bands of Martinique dancehalls in the 1930s. The band is named in French Creole for the puffy skirts traditionally worn by women at Carnival celebrations.

The Redwood Tango Ensemble is an energetic tango ensemble from San Francisco. The ensemble plays traditional Argentine tango with transcriptions and arrangements of the classic "golden era" orchestras of the 30's, 40's and 50's, primarily working in the styles of Troilo, Di Sarli, D'Arienzo, and Pugliese. The group also ventures into the concert pieces and nuevo-tango of Astor Piazzolla, Sexteto Mayor, and modern ensembles around the world. Their signature is a growing repertoire of original compositions written in the style of the classic orchestras, entirely danceable, but singular and alive.

Redwood Tango was the featured orchestra for Chicago Tango Week 2013, and has performed for milongas in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland, Chicago, Montreal, London, NYC, and dozens of cities in between.  The ensemble keeps an active presence in the bay area tango scene, and also gives musicality workshops and clinics to dance communities and musicians interested in getting deeper into the style and substance of the music.  Redwood Tango has released and toured to support two albums: Joaquin (2012), and Cayetano (2013), with a new album of original tangos set to be released in mid 2015.

The Friends are a volunteer organization of people interested in books and libraries and committed to supporting the Dublin Library.   The Friends offer two booksales a year, sponsor a lobby booksale and silent auction, and sell books online. Funds from booksales support programs for children, teens and adults including the Homework Center, as well as other service and equipment needs of the Library.

The Friends always need additional volunteers to help sort donations and work the booksales.  Newcomers are warmly invited to attend the monthly meetings and find out more about how you can help the Dublin Library.
