"Al Pacino and John Cazale play hapless would-be bankrobbers (Sonny and Sal respectively), who are forced through circumstances into an impossible situation... Dog Day Afternoon moves between moments of hyperbolic absurdity and scenes of real tragedy.  The film captures the swirling passions of a moment in its characters' lives and in history, with a brilliant immediacy." 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die

 Flower Power

This Multimedia Presetation Celebrates the 50th Anniversary of

Summer Of Love

From the refined to the revolutionary, find meaning in every bloom.

During the Summer of Love, flowers became powerful symbols of peace, a concept plucked from Buddhist art. More than merely decorative, floral imagery has helped convey ideas from the refined to the revolutionary for thousands of years.

In Asian art, flowers speak a language all their own. Where a lotus blooms, a rosebud is clasped, or cherry blossoms flutter to the ground, a story is told — if you know how to read it.

This summer, uncover the hidden meanings of flowers in Asian art. Delve into the symbolism of six significant blooms: the lotus, plum blossom, cherry blossom, chrysanthemum, tulip, and rose. The enduring importance of these flowers is shared through gloriously gilded screens, sleek lacquers, rare porcelains, striking sculptures, pop art, and sensory-igniting, participatory contemporary installations that speak to today’s issues, from climate change to social activism.

Looking for something good to read? Welcome to Readers' Round Table, a monthly meeting for book lovers. Here's a chance to share a bit about the books you read and fill up your "to-be-read" list with recommendations by your peers.

Each month you'll get a short list of themed books for inspiration. Choose a title to read and share the following month. You are welcome to share whatever great book you have read, regardless of whether it fits the monthly theme. Not sure how to "book talk"? It's easy. Simply tell us a little about the book (characters, story, setting) and who might enjoy it (mystery lovers, history buffs, etc.). Remember, don't give away the ending!

We're meant to be an informal, fun, and friendly setting. All types and categories of reading are welcome. No registration and no commitment required, just drop by and come share your latest book crush with us.

San Francisco Chronicle film critic Mick LaSalle wants you to love French film. He argues that French filmmakers offer actresses more complex and mature roles than American actresses find in Hollywood. In France, he writes, actresses are valued as women, and their roles portray emotional truth, personal freedom, and dignity. Join us as LaSalle discusses his book The Beauty of the Real: What Hollywood Can Learn From Contemporary French Actresses.
