nat_rose.GIF 2:00 PM Patricia Bulitt presents: My Grandmother's Plate Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

My Grandmother's Plate with Patricia Bulitt. Free. Material provided.

Nana Bulitt turned to the plate that hung on her kitchen wall and did something that day she had never done before!  She made the plate come alive with a story about Anna May and her red bicycle.  There is not little girl on the plate nor a red bicycle.  But there is a tree, a farmer, a house and a horse in the field, which all were  folded into the story.

IN the storytelling performance:

AT the onset of the performance, children are engaged with a rhythmic activity with rhythmic sticks and all the audience sings with Patricia.
Wearing an original wearable art costume, embellished with a 1911 photograph of Nana, ribbons and live roses, this story envelopes the young and old into the world of the imagination.  Courage of Anna May and her bicycle is brought to life in this tale of How My Grandmother Found A Story in A Plate!

Join us for this FREE screening of the movie "The Invisible War."  Directed by Kirby Dick, in collaboration with Amy Ziering, the film addresses the shockingly common and profoundly distressing problem of sexual assault in the United States military.  The Defense Department estimates that 22,800 violent sex crimes were committed in the military last year alone, and the filmmakers calculate that 1 in 5 women in military service has been the victim of sexual assault.

misc_none 1:00 PM  -  4:00 PM A Century of Service: A Visual History of the Dublin Library Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

Today is the official opening of a special exhibition celebrating 100 years of library service to the Dublin community. A Century of Service: A Visual History of the Dublin Library debuts May 14 at the Heritage Parks & Museum in the little classroom gallery at 6600 Donlon Way.  The exhibit is being curated by Maggie Stockel, Museum Professional, and is co-sponsored by the City of Dublin, the Friends of the Dublin Library, and the Dublin Historical Preservation Association.

The first library opened in the historic Green Store in May 21, 1914.  The County Librarian wrote “To the public opening, people came from all about in such numbers, one wondered where they came from.”

Over the years library services have been delivered from a bookmobile, a garage, a portable at an elementary school and a leased storefront on Village Parkway.  The Library moved to its first permanent facility at Amador Valley Blvd. in 1979, and ultimately to its current location in Dublin Civic Center in 2003.  Virginia Bennett, author of Dublin Reflections, was the library’s champion and Manager from 1967 to 1979 as well as Dublin's first children's librarian.  Mrs. B, as she was known to her staff, collected countless photographs, newspaper articles, quarterly reports, letters and other papers, documenting the Library’s story.

Her collection forms the basis of this innovative and fun exhibit.  Do you remember card catalogs?  Typewriters?  Videocassettes? Take a peek behind the scenes of library service.

The exhibit will remain in the classroom gallery from May 14 to July 31st.  Save the date and attend our celebration event scheduled for Friday evening May 30, 6:30 to 8:30 PM.

A story can inspire. A story can deliver powerful truths. A story can change lives. The documentary film, "Girl Rising," tells nine of those stories, about girls from developing countries overcoming enormous obstacles, such as gender inequality and human trafficking, to achieve an education. Directed by Academy Award nominated Director, Richard E. Robbins and narrated by Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and Selena Gomez, among others, this film is an inspiring and moving tribute to the resilience and perserverence of these girls and the power of education to transform lives.

This film showing is hosted by the Room to Read Club at Dublin High School. "Room to Read" is a non-profit organization that promotes literacy worldwide. Funding is provided by a City of Dublin Youth Mini-Grant Award, and the Friends of the Dublin Library. For more information on the film, check out http://girlrising.com/.

Attend Stitch 'n Inch to learn or practice knitting with Colette Pispisa or crocheting with Betty Joseph in a fun and friendly atmosphere. You are also welcome just to socialize. Their Newark Knitting group page is on Ravelry.com.

Stitch 'n Inch meets in the Conference Room every other Saturday. You may bring your own needles or hooks to learn, or borrow straight knitting needles and yarn. Colette is proficient at using double-pointed needles, but if you want to learn how to make hats, socks or both, you'll need to buy yourself a set.
