misc_none 2:00 PM  -  4:00 PM Don't Squish My Math: Menger's Sponge Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

Margo Wecksler is back with more Math Crafts!

It's a well known fact that in addition to being known for it's "small town ambiance," Albany is famous for it's mathematicians!  Menger's Sponge is a fractal solid:  to build one is to understand it!  Each participant will make a level zero cube, which takes six pieces of paper.  We'll join those level zeros together for a level one, made of 20 cubes (120 pieces of paper). With time and patience, we might make it to a level two, which has 400 cubes.  If we can keep this up, we may build a level three, which has 8,000 cubes: that would take more than our allotted two hours, but we'll all come away with a concrete (or paper) understanding of fractals!
