Building a Case for Teen Humanities Programming at Public Libraries

Registration is now open for “Building a Case for Teen Humanities Programming at Public Libraries,” a humanities and teen services advocacy conference taking place June 18 at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh - Squirrel Hill branch. The goal of this one day event is to increase awareness about the contributions of the humanities and public libraries in informal education of youth ages 12-18. The day will focus on advocating for programming that fosters a love of literacy and learning in teens so they attain the skills needed to succeed in school, work, and life.

At the conference, attendees will:

Hear from keynote speaker and teen services expert Michele Gorman on the importance of connecting young adults to the library and Sprout Fund's outreach officer Dave English on creating value for innovative learning programs aimed at young audiences.

Learn more PHC’s interactive reading program Teen Reading Lounge and skill development in participating youth
-
Network with other library, education and out-of-school time professionals as well as funders and local government supporters.

The EREC (Electronic Resources Evaluation Committee) is pleased to offer another session in our ongoing eResources Training series: Reader's Advisory Resources with Georgia Dawson and Miguel Llinas.
Georgia and Miguel will offer expert advice for conducting the reader's advisory interview and tips for using the NoveList database and will talk about creative ideas for patron engagement.
About our presenters: Armed with the unabashed will to tell everyone and anyone what to read, Georgia Dawson instinctively pursued the one career that would reward her for reading and give her a salary as well. She is a librarian in the First Floor - New & Featured Department at CLP - Main. According to his mother, Miguel Llinas started reading when he was four and he hasn't stopped yet. He is a Library Assistant in the First Floor - New & Featured Department at CLP - Main.

re:solve Crisis Network Situational Alliance Training

This not-to-be-missed workshop will give library staff tools for looking at the individual, the community and the library team in crisis prevention and management.
Situational Alliance is a 4 hour program consisting of a lecture and discussion focusing on assessment and prevention techniques as well as crisis management skills. It helps employees to assess whether a potentially dangerous situation is developing and how to prevent a crisis. This course will also include an overview of the re:solve services.
Workshop will be presented by Robert Fonte, M.Ed, CTR, Program Coordinator, and Bobbi Jo Wendel, MA, NCC, LPC, Crisis Trainer from the Crisis Training Institute at re:solve Crisis Network.
Libraries are encouraged to send one or more staff members particularly those most regularly providing frontline customer service.
Educational Objectives. At the conclusion of the program, participants should be able to:
• Identify a variety of reasons for challenging behavior
to occur
• Understand the impact of emotional trauma and the
importance of providing Trauma Informed Care
• Identify key factors in the prevention of crisis
situations
• Discuss responsibilities necessary in the safe
resolution of crisis situations
$15 per participant
Each workshop can engage up to 25 people.
4 CE hours
Participants are welcome to arrive at 12:00 with a brown bag lunch.
