elect_video_camera 7:00 PM MOVIES ABOUT MOVIES: The Player--Meeting Room Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

Robert Altman takes a scalpel to Hollywood ethics in the 1990s in his acidic 1992 satire The Player, adapted from Michael Tolkin's novel. The film concerns a sleek and smooth Hollywood studio executive who starts receiving death threats from a disgruntled writer because he has committed the ultimate Hollywood sin -- he promised the writer he would call him back and he never did. Altman cast over 65 stars in cameo roles as texture for his scabrous tale.  Rated R.

A brief discussion will follow the movie.  Sponsored by the Acton Memorial Library Foundation.

The snow date for the series is February 24.

lib_book_red 7:30 PM LIBRARY BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP--Conference Room Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend
This month's book is The Unincorporated Man, a provocative social/political/economic novel that takes place in the future, after civilization has fallen into complete economic collapse. This reborn civilization is one in which every individual is incorporated at birth, and spends many years trying to attain control over his or her own life by getting a majority of his or her own shares. Now the incredible has happened: a billionaire businessman, frozen in secret in the early twenty-first century, is discovered and resurrected, given health and a vigorous younger body. Justin Cord is the only unincorporated man in the world, a true stranger in this strange land. Justin survived because he is tough and smart. He cannot accept only part ownership of himself, even if that places him in conflict with a civilization that extends outside the solar system. All are welcome; copies of the book will be available at the Circulation Desk in late January.

elect_video_camera 7:00 PM MOVIES ABOUT MOVIES: Ed Wood--Meeting Room Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

Hollywood visionary Tim Burton pays homage to another Hollywood visionary, albeit a less successful one, in this unusual 1994 fictionalized biography. The film follows Wood (Johnny Depp) in his quest for film greatness as he writes and directs turkey after turkey. Ed Wood is a unique film -- at times side-splittingly funny; at others, tragic or even frightening -- and a heartfelt tribute to the love of movies, good and bad alike. Rated R.

A brief discussion will follow the movie.  Sponsored by the Acton Memorial Library Foundation.

The snow date for the series is February 24.

Did you know that the Lyme bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi is a cousin to syphilis? Did you know that the CDC estimates 300,000 cases of Lyme Disease each year in the United States?

Please join us for this important informational presentation. Sandra Bonzagni will discuss why these diseases are so difficult to test, diagnose and treat, as well as the controversy surrounding them.  Information about the co-infections, such as Babesiosis and Anaplasmosis, and personal and property protection for you and your family will be discussed. A list of references and links as well as other handouts will be available.

Sandra Bonzagni has been a member of Acton Garden Club for 25 years. She works with the Acton Health Department and the Acton Schools to provide Tick-Borne Disease Education. She developed a Lyme Disease Exhibit for the Flower Show, which won a Blue Ribbon and the Best Educational Exhibit Award as well as the Laura Wetmore Conservation Award. A well-respected presenter on the issue of tick-borne diseases, she served as a member of the Middlesex Tick Task Force which developed a tick survey, and received a grant for free tick testing for Lyme, Anaplasmosis and Babesiosis for three counties in Massachusetts.

This month's title is Madame Secretary by Madeline Albright and Bill Woodward. In it, former Secretary of State Albright recounts her life as a refugee fleeing the Nazis and then the Communists; as a new immigrant to the United States at age 11; her marriage into the prominent Guggenheim family and her painful divorce; and the life-altering discovery of her Jewish heritage. She also illuminates her remarkable public persona and her friendships and battles with world leaders such as Vaclav Havel, Vladimir Putin, Slobodan Milosevic, Hillary Clinton, and Kim Jong-il. Albright narrates her book in a strong, clear, and convincing voice.

All are welcome. Copies of the book will be available at the circulation desk in late February.

This month's title is The Girl Next Door by Ruth Rendell.  It's a mystery novel about friendship, love, and aging. In the waning months of the second World War, a group of children discover an earthen tunnel in their neighborhood. The subterranean space becomes their "secret garden," where the friends play games and tell stories. Six decades later, on the same land, construction workers uncover a tin box containing two skeletal hands. As the discovery makes national news, the friends come together once again, to recall their days in the tunnel for the detective investigating the case. This impromptu reunion causes long-simmering feelings to bubble to the surface.

All are welcome. Copies of the book will be available at the circulation desk in mid-March.
