lib_book_signing 7:00 PM WICKED PISSED: NEW ENGLAND'S MOST FAMOUS FEUDS--Meeting Room Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

From sports to politics, food to finance, aviation to engineering, to bitter disputes over simple boundaries, New England’s feuds have peppered the region’s life for centuries. They’ve been raw and rowdy, sometimes high minded and humorous, and in a place renowned for its deep sense of history, often long-running and legendary. There are even some that will undoubtedly outlast the region’s ancient stonewalls.

Join us as Chronicle's Ted Reinstein, a native New Englander and local writer, offers fascinating stories from the history of New England, bringing to life many of the fights, spats, and arguments, demonstrating what it really means to be 'wicked pissed.'

The Acton Memorial Library Foundation (AMLF), Inc. is pleased to host its second antique appraisal event.

Mary Westcott will conduct the event.  She is a retired educator who enjoys combining her love for antiques with her teaching abilities.  Her lively presentation centers on the historical significance, age, and value of the antique items which are brought in by interested collectors and how they relate to today’s lifestyle.  Decorating and collecting trends will be addressed as well as restoration, research, investments and auctions.

Mary has made her presentations to over 400 clubs and organizations from Maine to Florida. She is currently on the staff of Kaminski Auctions and Appraisal Service where she was recently honored for over 25 years of service.  During her years at Kaminski Auctions, she has had many exciting opportunities, including appraising the antique artifacts at the Grand Canyon and participating in the Oprah Winfrey Auction in Santa Barbara, California.

The fee is $10 for one item and $25 for three items.

All proceeds will benefit the library through the AML Foundation.

Tonight's title is The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers. With its profound sense of moral isolation and its compassionate glimpses into its characters' inner lives, the novel is considered McCullers' finest work, an enduring masterpiece first published by in 1940. Wonderfully attuned to the spiritual isolation that underlies the human condition, and with a deft sense for racial tensions in the South, McCullers spins a haunting, unforgettable story that gives voice to the rejected, the forgotten, and the mistreated and gives voice to the quiet, intensely personal search for beauty.

All are welcome; copies of the book are available at the circulation desk in late March.

Tonight's title is 1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created by Charles Mann. More than 200 million years ago, geological forces split apart the continents. Isolated, the two halves of the world developed radically different plants and animals. When Columbus set foot in the Americas, he ended that separation and began the creation of a worldwide network of ecological and economic exchange called the Columbian Exchange by researchers. According to Mann, it underlies much of subsequent human history and is the germ of today's fiercest political disputes, from immigration to trade policy to culture wars.

All are welcome; copies of the book are available at the circulation desk in late April.

Tonight's title is From Silk to Silicon: How Ten Extraordinary People Unleashed the Forces of Globalization by Jeffrey Garten. This is the first book to look at the history of globalization through the lens of individuals who did something transformative, as opposed to describing globalization through trends, policies, or particular industries. From Silk to Silicon tells the story of who these ten men and women were, what they did, how they did it and how their achievements continue to shape our world today.

All are welcome; copies of the book are available at the circulation desk in mid-May.
