Tonight's movie is 'Network,' which is rated R. A trenchant satire of "trash TV," 'Network' seems to grow only more relevant with each passing year. 'Network' won Oscars for Paddy Chayefsky's screenplay as well as for three of four acting categories -- Faye Dunaway for Best Actress, Peter Finch for Best Actor (in the only posthumous Oscar yet awarded), and Beatrice Straight for Best Supporting Actress. A brief discussion will follow the film.

ent_filmproj 7:00 PM SUMMER FILM SERIES--Meeting Room Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend
Tonight's movie is 'Taxi Driver,' which is rated R. In Martin Scorsese's classic drama, insomniac ex-Marine Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) works the nightshift, driving his cab throughout decaying mid-'70s New York City. Released in the Bicentennial year, after Vietnam, Watergate, and attempts on President Ford's life, the film's intense portrait of a man and a society unhinged spoke resonantly to the mid-'70s audience. It was nominated for 4 Academy Awards and won the Cannes Film Festival. A brief discussion will follow the film.

Tonight's film is 'The Deer Hunter,' which is rated R. One of several 1978 films dealing with the Vietnam War, Michael Cimino's epic feature, winner of 5 Academy Awards, was renowned both for its tough portrayal of the war's effect on American working class steel workers and notorious for its ahistorical use of Russian roulette in the Vietnam sequences. A brief discussion will follow the film.

This month's title is The Art Forger by B. A. Shapiro. Almost twenty-five years after the infamous art heist at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum--still the largest unsolved art theft in history--one of the stolen Degas paintings is delivered to the Boston studio of a young artist. Claire Roth has entered into a Faustian bargain with a powerful gallery owner by agreeing to forge the Degas in exchange for a one-woman show in his renowned gallery. But as she begins her work, she starts to suspect that this long-missing masterpiece--the very one that had been hanging at the Gardner for one hundred years--may itself be a forgery. All are welcome. Copies of the book will be available at the circulation desk in late August.

This month's book is The Monuments Men by Robert Edsel. An unlikely World War II platoon has been tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. With the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could they possibly succeed? But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time, they would risk their lives to protect mankind's greatest achievements. All are welcome; copies of the book will be available at the Circulation Desk in late September.

This month's book is The Unincorporated Man, a provocative social/political/economic novel that takes place in the future, after civilization has fallen into complete economic collapse. This reborn civilization is one in which every individual is incorporated at birth, and spends many years trying to attain control over his or her own life by getting a majority of his or her own shares. Now the incredible has happened: a billionaire businessman, frozen in secret in the early twenty-first century, is discovered and resurrected, given health and a vigorous younger body. Justin Cord is the only unincorporated man in the world, a true stranger in this strange land. Justin survived because he is tough and smart. He cannot accept only part ownership of himself, even if that places him in conflict with a civilization that extends outside the solar system. All are welcome; copies of the book will be available at the Circulation Desk in late January.
