nat_leaf_green 7:00 PM THOREAU AND THE LANGUAGE OF TREES--Meeting Room Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

Richard Higgins takes us through an illustrated exploration of Thoreau's deep connection to trees, which were central to Henry David Thoreau’s creativity as a writer, his work as a naturalist, his thought, and his inner life. He loved them personally, admired their beauty, studied how they grew, took them as spiritual companions and wrote about them as few have.

Higgins is a writer and editor in Concord, Massachusetts. His most recent book, Thoreau and the Language of Trees, was published in April by the University of California Press. A former longtime staff writer for the Boston Globe,  Higgins’s writing has appeared in the New York Times, Atlantic Monthly, Christian Century, and Smithsonian.

lib_bookshelf 7:30 PM  -  8:45 PM BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP--Conference Room Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

Tonight's title is 1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created by Charles Mann. More than 200 million years ago, geological forces split apart the continents. Isolated, the two halves of the world developed radically different plants and animals. When Columbus set foot in the Americas, he ended that separation and began the creation of a worldwide network of ecological and economic exchange called the Columbian Exchange by researchers. According to Mann, it underlies much of subsequent human history and is the germ of today's fiercest political disputes, from immigration to trade policy to culture wars.

All are welcome; copies of the book are available at the circulation desk in late April.

The Peregrine Falcon is known for being the fastest animal on the planet, for being the bird of choice for falconry, and for being one of the best known victims of DDT.  Its dramatic decline in the 1940s through 1960s left the entire eastern U.S. without a single nesting pair.  Dr. Tom French’s program, illustrated with numerous photos, will review the restoration efforts that have led to the remarkable recovery of this amazing bird to Massachusetts, and show how it has adapted to the modern urban environment.

Tom is the Assistant Director of the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, where he serves as Director of the Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program. He has served on numerous committees of scientific societies and conservation organizations, graduate student committees, and endangered species recovery teams. For six years, he chaired the New England Large Whale Recovery Plan Implementation Team. He has written over forty papers on mammals and birds, and works frequently with the media to foster greater public interest in conservation.

Tonight's title is From Silk to Silicon: How Ten Extraordinary People Unleashed the Forces of Globalization by Jeffrey Garten. This is the first book to look at the history of globalization through the lens of individuals who did something transformative, as opposed to describing globalization through trends, policies, or particular industries. From Silk to Silicon tells the story of who these ten men and women were, what they did, how they did it and how their achievements continue to shape our world today.

All are welcome; copies of the book are available at the circulation desk in mid-May.
