lib_book_signing 1:30 PM MASSACRE ON THE MERRIMACK--Meeting Room Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

Early on March 15,1697, a band of Abenaki raided the village of Haverhill, Massachusetts. Striking swiftly, they killed 27 settlers, taking 13 captive, including Hannah Duston and her week-old daughter. After witnessing her infant’s murder, Duston resolved to get even. Two weeks into their captivity, Duston and her companions moved among the sleeping Abenaki, killing 10 of them, including 6 children. After scalping their victims, Duston and the others escaped down the Merrimack River, returning to tell their stories and collect a bounty for the scalps.
Was Hannah Duston the prototypical feminist avenger, or the harbinger of the Native American genocide? Join us as best-selling author Jay Atkinson sheds new light on the early struggle for North America.

Tonight's title is Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl. The psychiatrist's memoir has riveted generations of readers with its descriptions of life in Nazi death camps and its lessons for spiritual survival.  He argues that we cannot avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose. At the time of his death in 1997, Man's Search for Meaning had sold more than 10 million copies in twenty-four languages. A 1991 reader survey that asked readers to name a "book that made a difference in your life" found it among the ten most influential books in America.

All are welcome; copies of the book are available at the circulation desk in mid-February.

From sports to politics, food to finance, aviation to engineering, to bitter disputes over simple boundaries, New England’s feuds have peppered the region’s life for centuries. They’ve been raw and rowdy, sometimes high minded and humorous, and in a place renowned for its deep sense of history, often long-running and legendary. There are even some that will undoubtedly outlast the region’s ancient stonewalls.

Join us as Chronicle's Ted Reinstein, a native New Englander and local writer, offers fascinating stories from the history of New England, bringing to life many of the fights, spats, and arguments, demonstrating what it really means to be 'wicked pissed.'

Tonight's title is The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers. With its profound sense of moral isolation and its compassionate glimpses into its characters' inner lives, the novel is considered McCullers' finest work, an enduring masterpiece first published by in 1940. Wonderfully attuned to the spiritual isolation that underlies the human condition, and with a deft sense for racial tensions in the South, McCullers spins a haunting, unforgettable story that gives voice to the rejected, the forgotten, and the mistreated and gives voice to the quiet, intensely personal search for beauty.

All are welcome; copies of the book are available at the circulation desk in late March.

Tonight's title is 1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created by Charles Mann. More than 200 million years ago, geological forces split apart the continents. Isolated, the two halves of the world developed radically different plants and animals. When Columbus set foot in the Americas, he ended that separation and began the creation of a worldwide network of ecological and economic exchange called the Columbian Exchange by researchers. According to Mann, it underlies much of subsequent human history and is the germ of today's fiercest political disputes, from immigration to trade policy to culture wars.

All are welcome; copies of the book are available at the circulation desk in late April.

Tonight's title is From Silk to Silicon: How Ten Extraordinary People Unleashed the Forces of Globalization by Jeffrey Garten. This is the first book to look at the history of globalization through the lens of individuals who did something transformative, as opposed to describing globalization through trends, policies, or particular industries. From Silk to Silicon tells the story of who these ten men and women were, what they did, how they did it and how their achievements continue to shape our world today.

All are welcome; copies of the book are available at the circulation desk in mid-May.
