Escape to a warmer climate with this 1935 drama starring Charles Laughton and Clark Gable.  Directed by Frank Lloyd and based on the Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall novel by the same name, the movie was one of the biggest hits of its time. Although its historical accuracy has been questioned, film critics consider this adaptation to be the best cinematic work inspired by the mutiny.

The film is not rated.

A brief discussion will follow the movie.

Snow date for the series is February 22.

Escape to a warmer climate with this film starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn with Robert Morley, Peter Bull, Walter Gotell, Richard Marner and Theodore Bikel. Directed by John Huston , it is a 1951 British-American adventure film adapted from the 1935 novel of the same name by C. S. Forester. It tells the story of a strait-laced missionary and a rough and ready river boat captain in German East Africa in the early days of World War I.

The African Queen was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 1994, with the Library of Congress deeming it "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant".  Bogart won the Academy Award for Best Actor, his only Oscar, for his portrayal of the river boat captain.

The film is rated PG.

Tonight's title is The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. He clings to the one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art. As an adult, Theo moves silkily between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty labyrinth of an antiques store where he works. He is alienated and in love--and at the center of a narrowing, ever more dangerous circle. The Goldfinch is an old-fashioned story of loss and obsession, survival and self-invention, and the ruthless machinations of fate.

All are welcome; copies of the book are available at the circulation desk in mid-January.

Tonight's title is Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl. The psychiatrist's memoir has riveted generations of readers with its descriptions of life in Nazi death camps and its lessons for spiritual survival.  He argues that we cannot avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose. At the time of his death in 1997, Man's Search for Meaning had sold more than 10 million copies in twenty-four languages. A 1991 reader survey that asked readers to name a "book that made a difference in your life" found it among the ten most influential books in America.

All are welcome; copies of the book are available at the circulation desk in mid-February.

Tonight's title is The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers. With its profound sense of moral isolation and its compassionate glimpses into its characters' inner lives, the novel is considered McCullers' finest work, an enduring masterpiece first published by in 1940. Wonderfully attuned to the spiritual isolation that underlies the human condition, and with a deft sense for racial tensions in the South, McCullers spins a haunting, unforgettable story that gives voice to the rejected, the forgotten, and the mistreated and gives voice to the quiet, intensely personal search for beauty.

All are welcome; copies of the book are available at the circulation desk in late March.

Tonight's title is 1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created by Charles Mann. More than 200 million years ago, geological forces split apart the continents. Isolated, the two halves of the world developed radically different plants and animals. When Columbus set foot in the Americas, he ended that separation and began the creation of a worldwide network of ecological and economic exchange called the Columbian Exchange by researchers. According to Mann, it underlies much of subsequent human history and is the germ of today's fiercest political disputes, from immigration to trade policy to culture wars.

All are welcome; copies of the book are available at the circulation desk in late April.

Tonight's title is From Silk to Silicon: How Ten Extraordinary People Unleashed the Forces of Globalization by Jeffrey Garten. This is the first book to look at the history of globalization through the lens of individuals who did something transformative, as opposed to describing globalization through trends, policies, or particular industries. From Silk to Silicon tells the story of who these ten men and women were, what they did, how they did it and how their achievements continue to shape our world today.

All are welcome; copies of the book are available at the circulation desk in mid-May.
