lib_book3 1:00 PM  -  2:00 PM Council on Aging Book Discussion - Book of Ages by Jill Lepore Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, Book of Ages: the Life and Opinion of Jane Franklin by Jill Lepore.

National Book Award Finalist - From one of our most accomplished and widely admired historians, a revelatory portrait of Benjamin Franklin's youngest sister and a history of history itself. Like her brother, Jane Franklin was a passionate reader, a gifted writer, and an astonishingly shrewd political commentator. Making use of an amazing cache of little-studied material, including documents, objects, and portraits only just discovered, Jill Lepore brings Jane Franklin to life in a way that illuminates not only this one woman but an entire world - a world usually lost to history. Lepore's life of Jane Franklin, with its strikingly original vantage on her remarkable brother, is at once a wholly different account of the founding of the United States and one of the great untold stories of American history and letters: a life unknown.

The Council on Aging Book Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM. Our Meetings take place at Frothingham Hall, 15 Barrows Street, N. Easton, MA. We welcome all new members!

misc_none 6:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Documentary Series: The New Antiquarian Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Brockton Arts and the Ames Free Library are pleased to present an evening of documentary film:

This film is a thoughtful and provocative introduction to a re-emerging understanding of Native American life, spirituality, and awareness by Smithsonian filmmaker Ted Timreck.

The film focuses on native population's relationship with the landscape itself and its interface with the arc of the heavens. As the ice sheets receded at the end of the last ice age, a universal human intelligence, creativity, and curiosity followed those ice sheets north.  This film will introduce you to the expression of that common humanity in the landscapes around us.

"Twenty years ago, four teenagers at summer camp walked into the woods at night. Two were found murdered, and the others were never seen again. Two decades later, survivor Paul Copeland, now the county prosecutor of Essex, NJ, is dealing with raising his six- year-old daughter as a single father after his wife has died of cancer. Balancing family life and a career as a prosecutor distracts him from his past traumas, but only for so long. When a homicide victim is found with evidence linking him to Copeland, the well-buried secrets of the prosecutor's family are threatened.
Is this homicide victim one of the campers who disappeared with his sister? Could his sister be alive? Cope has to confront what he left behind twenty years ago, and decide what is better left hidden in the dark and what truths can be brought to light." ~ Goodreads

Join us for a discussion of Three Times Lucky by Sheila Turnage.

Rising sixth grader Miss Moses LoBeau lives in the small town of Tupelo Landing, NC, where everyone's business is fair game and no secret is sacred. She washed ashore in a hurricane eleven years ago, and she's been making waves ever since. Although Mo hopes someday to find her "upstream mother," she's found a home with the Colonel--a café owner with a forgotten past of his own--and Miss Lana, the fabulous café hostess. She will protect those she loves with every bit of her strong will and tough attitude. So when a lawman comes to town asking about a murder, Mo and her best friend, Dale Earnhardt Johnson III, set out to uncover the truth in hopes of saving the only family Mo has ever known.

lib_book3 1:00 PM  -  2:00 PM Council on Aging Book Discussion - Swamplandia! by Karen Russell Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, Swamplandia! by Karen Russell

Swamplandia! From the celebrated twenty-nine-year-old author of the everywhere-heralded short-story collection St. Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves comes a blazingly original debut novel that takes us back to the swamps of the Florida Everglades, and introduces us to Ava Bigtree, an unforgettable young heroine. The Bigtree alligator-wrestling dynasty is in decline, and Swamplandia!, their island home and gator-wrestling theme park, formerly #1 in the region, is swiftly being encroached upon by a fearsome and sophisticated competitor called the World of Darkness. Ava's mother, the park's indomitable headliner, has just died; her sister, Ossie, has fallen in love with a spooky character known as the Dredgeman, who may or may not be an actual ghost; and her brilliant big brother, Kiwi, who dreams of becoming a scholar, has just defected to the World of Darkness in a last-ditch effort to keep their family business from going under. Ava's father, affectionately known as Chief Bigtree, is AWOL; and that leaves Ava, a resourceful but terrified thirteen, to manage ninety-eight gators and the vast, inscrutable landscape of her own grief. Against a backdrop of hauntingly fecund plant life animated by ancient lizards and lawless hungers, Karen Russell has written an utterly singular novel about a family's struggle to stay afloat in a world that is inexorably sinking. An arrestingly beautiful and inventive work from a vibrant new voice in fiction.

The Council on Aging Book Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM. Our Meetings take place at Frothingham Hall, 15 Barrows Street, N. Easton, MA. We welcome all new members!

Is it possible to sustain romance and eroticism in an intimate relationship? Can intimacy squelch the fire of erotic love? The quest for security and belonging can zap sexual desire, unless you do something about it. Here's how.

Dr. Davis received his Ph.D. in Psychology from Boston University and trained at the Franciscan Hospital for Children. Further training included couples and family therapy at the family Institute of Cambridge. His training in sex therapy was at McLeod Hospital where he was also a staff psychologist and clinical supervisor in psychology at Harvard Medical School.

Join us as we talk about designing travel for learning and self-development, and the lessons we learn the hard way. Like much of human existence, travel, by itself, does not lead to growth or learning. Long life does not cause wisdom; years of travel often only reinforce xenophobic presumptions. Part of our professional mission is to develop cross-cultural awareness and facility in adolescents, and one way we do this is through short, intensive, and carefully crafted travel experiences.

Jennifer Swanson and Jim Lee are professors in the business department of Stonehill College. Jennifer directs the international business program and Jim directs the management program. Both have lived and taught abroad, and individually and together they have traveled with students in Europe, Asia, North Africa, and Central and South America.

"When Mae Holland is hired to work for the Circle, the world’s most powerful internet company, she feels she’s been given the opportunity of a lifetime. Mae can’t believe her luck, her great fortune to work for the most influential company in the world—even as life beyond the campus grows distant, even as a strange encounter with a colleague leaves her shaken, even as her role at the Circle becomes increasingly public. What begins as the captivating story of one woman’s ambition and idealism soon becomes a heart-racing novel of suspense, raising questions about memory, history, privacy, and democracy." ~Amazon

As he takes us through the history of our modern comforts, Bryson demonstrates that whatever happens in the world eventually ends up in our home, in the paint, the pipes, the pillows, and every item of furniture. Bryson has one of the liveliest, most inquisitive minds on the planet, and his sheer prose fluency makes At Home one of the most entertaining books ever written about private life." ~Amazon
