lib_book3 1:00 PM  -  2:00 PM Council on Aging Book Discussion - Flash boys: a Wall Street revolt by Michael Lewis Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
Contact: Ames Free Library   508-238-2000   info@amesfreelibrary.org

Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, Flash boys: a Wall Street Revolt by Michael Lewis.

Flash BoysFlash Boys is about a small group of Wall Street guys who figure out that the U.S. stock market has been rigged for the benefit of insiders and that, post-financial crisis, the markets have become not more free but less, and more controlled by the big Wall Street banks. The flash boys band together and set out to reform the financial markets. This they do by creating an exchange in which high-frequency trading - source of the most intractable problems--will have no advantage whatsoever. The characters in Flash Boys are fabulous, each completely different from what you think of when you think "Wall Street guy." Several have walked away from jobs in the financial sector that paid them millions of dollars a year. From their new vantage point they investigate the big banks, the world's stock exchanges, and high-frequency trading firms as they have never been investigated, and expose the many strange ways that Wall Street generates profits. The light that Lewis shines into the darkest corners of the financial world may not be good for your blood pressure, because if you have any contact with the market, even a retirement account, this story is happening to you. But in the end, Flash Boys is an uplifting read. Here are people who have somehow preserved a moral sense in an environment where you don't get paid for that; they have perceived an institutionalized injustice and are willing to go to war to fix it.

The Council on Aging Book Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM. Our Meetings take place at Frothingham Hall, 15 Barrows Street. We welcome all new members!

Deep within the Ozark Mountains, a terrorist family resides in a compound called the Fortress. Tim Wallace is the patriarch of the terrorist clan, and he and his wife train their children to one-day infiltrate key government agencies. One by one, the Wallace children leave the Fortress and take their respective assignments, including Peter Wallace, their prodigy, into the FBI. However, when Peter is posted to the Boston office of the FBI, he tangles with Carlos Sullivan, Boston’s polygraph examiner, who begins to suspect Peter isn't who he claims to be. Will they uncover his secret in time? Or will the Wallace’s evil conspiracy bring the country to its knees?

Michael C. De la Peña was born in Boston, MA, and graduated from George Washington University. He went on to graduate from the FBI Academy in 1990, assigned as a Special Agent to the New Haven, San Juan, and Boston offices of the FBI. He's a certified Polygraph examiner and has conducted approximately 2,000 polygraph exams for the FBI in the US as well as Latin America and Iraq. Join us for a discussion of El Deafo by Cece Bell.

Going to school and making new friends can be tough. But going to school and making new friends while wearing a bulky hearing aid strapped to your chest? That requires superpowers! In this funny, poignant graphic novel memoir, author/illustrator Cece Bell chronicles her hearing loss at a young age and her subsequent experiences with the Phonic Ear, a very powerful--and very awkward--hearing aid. The Phonic Ear gives Cece the ability to hear--sometimes things she shouldn't--but also isolates her from her classmates. She really just wants to fit in and find a true friend, someone who appreciates her as she is. After some trouble, she is finally able to harness the power of the Phonic Ear and become "El Deafo, Listener for All." And more importantly, declare a place for herself in the world and find the friend she's longed for.

"When Mae Holland is hired to work for the Circle, the world’s most powerful internet company, she feels she’s been given the opportunity of a lifetime. Mae can’t believe her luck, her great fortune to work for the most influential company in the world—even as life beyond the campus grows distant, even as a strange encounter with a colleague leaves her shaken, even as her role at the Circle becomes increasingly public. Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, Before I go to sleep by S. J. Watson.

Before I go to sleep"As I sleep, my mind will erase everything I did today. I will wake up tomorrow as I did this morning. Thinking I'm still a child. Thinking I have a whole lifetime of choice ahead of me. . . ." Memories define us. So what if you lost yours every time you went to sleep? Your name, your identity, your past, even the people you love--all forgotten overnight. And the one person you trust may be telling you only half the story. Welcome to Christine's life.

The Council on Aging Book Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM. Our Meetings take place at Frothingham Hall, 15 Barrows Street, N. Easton, MA. We welcome all new members!

Join us for a discussion on author Bill Bryson's novelThe Circle.

"With his signature wit, charm, and seemingly limitless knowledge, Bill Bryson takes us on a room-by-room tour through his own house, using each room as a jumping off point into the vast history of the domestic artifacts we take for granted. As he takes us through the history of our modern comforts, Bryson demonstrates that whatever happens in the world eventually ends up in our home, in the paint, the pipes, the pillows, and every item of furniture. Bryson has one of the liveliest, most inquisitive minds on the planet, and his sheer prose fluency makes At Home one of the most entertaining books ever written about private life." ~Amazon

lib_book3 1:30 PM  -  2:30 PM Book Discussion - At Home: A Short History of Private Life by Bill Bryson Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Bryson has one of the liveliest, most inquisitive minds on the planet, and his sheer prose fluency makes At Home one of the most entertaining books ever written about private life." ~Amazon

lib_book3 1:00 PM  -  2:00 PM Council on Aging Book Discussion - The bully pulpit by Doris Kearns Goodwin, pt.1 Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, The bully pulpit : Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the golden age of journalism by Doris Kearns Goodwin. This discussion will continue on our next meeting, March 24th.

The bully pulpitThe gap between rich and poor has never been wider...legislative stalemate paralyzes the country...corporations resist federal regulations...spectacular mergers produce giant companies...the influence of money in politics deepens...bombs explode in crowded streets...small wars proliferate far from our shores...a dizzying array of inventions speeds the pace of daily life. These unnervingly familiar headlines serve as the backdrop for Doris Kearns Goodwin's highly anticipated The Bully Pulpit -a dynamic history of the first decade of the Progressive era, that tumultuous time when the nation was coming unseamed and reform was in the air. The story is told through the intense friendship of Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft-a close relationship that strengthens both men before it ruptures in 1912, when they engage in a brutal fight for the presidential nomination that divides their wives, their children, and their closest friends, while crippling the progressive wing of the Republican Party, causing Democrat Woodrow Wilson to be elected, and changing the country's history. The Bully Pulpit is also the story of the muckraking press, which arouses the spirit of reform that helps Roosevelt push the government to shed its laissez-faire attitude toward robber barons, corrupt politicians, and corporate exploiters of our natural resources.

The Council on Aging Book Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM. Our Meetings take place at Frothingham Hall, 15 Barrows Street, N. Easton, MA. We welcome all new members!

Contact: Ames Free Library   508-238-2000   info@amesfreelibrary.org

Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, The leftovers by Tom Perrotta.

The leftoversWhat if--whoosh, right now, with no explanation--a number of us simply vanished? Would some of us collapse? Would others of us go on, one foot in front of the other, as we did before the world turned upside down? That's what the bewildered citizens of Mapleton, who lost many of their neighbors, friends and lovers in the event known as the Sudden Departure, have to figure out. Because nothing has been the same since it happened--not marriages, not friendships, not even the relationships between parents and children. Kevin Garvey, Mapleton's new mayor, wants to speed up the healing process, to bring a sense of renewed hope and purpose to his traumatized community. Kevin's own family has fallen apart in the wake of the disaster: his wife, Laurie, has left to join the Guilty Remnant, a homegrown cult whose members take a vow of silence; his son, Tom, is gone, too, dropping out of college to follow a sketchy prophet named Holy Wayne. Only Kevin's teenaged daughter, Jill, remains, and she's definitely not the sweet "A" student she used to be. Kevin wants to help her, but he's distracted by his growing relationship with Nora Durst, a woman who lost her entire family on October 14th and is still reeling from the tragedy, even as she struggles to move beyond it and make a new start. With heart, intelligence and a rare ability to illuminate the struggles inherent in ordinary lives, Tom Perrotta has written a startling, thought-provoking novel about love, connection and loss.

The Council on Aging Book Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM. Our Meetings take place at Frothingham Hall, 15 Barrows Street, N. Easton, MA. We welcome all new members!

The greater journey

Not all pioneers went west.

In The Greater Journey, David McCullough tells the enthralling, inspiring—and until now, untold—story of the adventurous American artists, writers, doctors, politicians, and others who set off for Paris in the years between 1830 and 1900, hungry to learn and to excel in their work. What they achieved would profoundly alter American history.

Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, The English patient by Michael Ondaatje.

The English patient

With unsettling beauty and intelligence, Michael Ondaatje's Booker Prize-winning novel traces the intersection of four damaged lives in an abandoned Italian villa at the end of World War II.The nurse Hana, exhausted by death, obsessively tends to her last surviving patient. Caravaggio, the thief, tries to reimagine who he is, now that his hands are hopelessly maimed. The Indian sapper Kip searches for hidden bombs in a landscape where nothing is safe but himself. And at the center of his labyrinth lies the English patient, nameless and hideously burned, a man who is both a riddle and a provocation to his companions--and whose memories of suffering, rescue, and betrayal illuminate this book like flashes of heat lightning.

lib_book3 1:00 PM  -  2:00 PM Council on Aging Book Discussion - One summer: America, 1927 by Bill Bryson Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, One summer: America, 1927 by Bill Bryson.

One summer

The summer of 1927 began with one of the signature events of the twentieth century: on May 21, 1927, Charles Lindbergh became the first man to cross the Atlantic by plane nonstop, and when he landed in Le Bourget airfield near Paris, he ignited an explosion of worldwide rapture and instantly became the most famous person on the planet. Meanwhile, the titanically talented Babe Ruth was beginning his assault on the home run record, which would culminate on September 30 with his sixtieth blast, one of the most resonant and durable records in sports history. In between those dates a Queens housewife named Ruth Snyder and her corset-salesman lover garroted her husband, leading to a murder trial that became a huge tabloid sensation. Alvin “Shipwreck” Kelly sat atop a flagpole in Newark, New Jersey, for twelve days—a new record. The American South was clobbered by unprecedented rain and by flooding of the Mississippi basin, a great human disaster, the relief efforts for which were guided by the uncannily able and insufferably pompous Herbert Hoover. Calvin Coolidge interrupted an already leisurely presidency for an even more relaxing three-month vacation in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The gangster Al Capone tightened his grip on the illegal booze business through a gaudy and murderous reign of terror and municipal corruption. The first true “talking picture,” Al Jolson’s The Jazz Singer, was filmed and forever changed the motion picture industry. The four most powerful central bankers on earth met in secret session on a Long Island estate and made a fateful decision that virtually guaranteed a future crash and depression.
All this and much, much more transpired in that epochal summer of 1927, and Bill Bryson captures its outsized personalities, exciting events, and occasional just plain weirdness with his trademark vividness, eye for telling detail, and delicious humor. In that year America stepped out onto the world stage as the main event, and One Summer transforms it all into narrative nonfiction of the highest order.
