lib_book3 1:00 PM  -  2:00 PM Council on Aging Book Discussion - The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman.

Over five years in the writing, The Dovekeepers is Alice Hoffman's most ambitious and mesmerizing novel, a tour de force of imagination and research, set in ancient Israel. In 70 C.E., nine hundred Jews held out for months against armies of Romans on Masada, a mountain in the Judean desert. According to the ancient historian Josephus, two women and five children survived. Based on this tragic and iconic event, Hoffman's novel is a spellbinding tale of four extraordinarily bold, resourceful, and sensuous women, each of whom has come to Masada by a different path. The lives of these four complex and fiercely independent women intersect in the desperate days of the siege. All are dovekeepers, and all are also keeping secrets-about who they are, where they come from, who fathered them, and whom they love. The Dovekeepers is Alice Hoffman's masterpiece.

The Council on Aging Book Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM. Our Meetings take place at Frothingham Hall, 15 Barrows Street, N. Easton, MA. We welcome all new members!

lib_book3 1:00 PM  -  2:00 PM Council on Aging Book Discussion - Book of Ages by Jill Lepore Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, Book of Ages: the Life and Opinion of Jane Franklin by Jill Lepore.

National Book Award Finalist - From one of our most accomplished and widely admired historians, a revelatory portrait of Benjamin Franklin's youngest sister and a history of history itself. Like her brother, Jane Franklin was a passionate reader, a gifted writer, and an astonishingly shrewd political commentator. Making use of an amazing cache of little-studied material, including documents, objects, and portraits only just discovered, Jill Lepore brings Jane Franklin to life in a way that illuminates not only this one woman but an entire world - a world usually lost to history. Lepore's life of Jane Franklin, with its strikingly original vantage on her remarkable brother, is at once a wholly different account of the founding of the United States and one of the great untold stories of American history and letters: a life unknown.

The Council on Aging Book Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM. Our Meetings take place at Frothingham Hall, 15 Barrows Street, N. Easton, MA. We welcome all new members!

lib_sherlock_holmes.GIF 3:00 PM  -  4:00 PM Mystery Book Club -The Woods by Harlan Coben Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

"Twenty years ago, four teenagers at summer camp walked into the woods at night. Two were found murdered, and the others were never seen again. Four families had their lives changed forever. Now, two decades later, they are about to change again. For Paul Copeland, the county prosecutor of Essex, New Jersey, mourning the loss of his sister has only recently begun to subside. Cope, as he is known, is now dealing with raising his six- year-old daughter as a single father after his wife has died of cancer. Balancing family life and a rapidly ascending career as a prosecutor distracts him from his past traumas, but only for so long. When a homicide victim is found with evidence linking him to Cope, the well-buried secrets of the prosecutor's family are threatened.
Is this homicide victim one of the campers who disappeared with his sister? Could his sister be alive? Cope has to confront so much he left behind that summer twenty years ago: his first love, Lucy; his mother, who abandoned the family; and the secrets that his Russian parents might have been hiding even from their own children. Cope must decide what is better left hidden in the dark and what truths can be brought to the light." ~Goodreads

Contact: Ames Free Library   508-238-2000   info@amesfreelibrary.org

Join us as we talk about designing travel for learning and self-development, and the lessons we learn the hard way. Like much of human existence, travel, by itself, does not lead to growth or learning. Long life does not cause wisdom; years of travel often only reinforce xenophobic presumptions. Part of our professional mission is to develop cross-cultural awareness and facility in adolescents, and one way we do this is through short, intensive, and carefully crafted travel experiences.

Jennifer Swanson and Jim Lee are professors in the business department of Stonehill College. Jennifer directs the international business program and Jim directs the management program. Both have lived and taught abroad, and individually and together they have traveled with students in Europe, Asia, North Africa, and Central and South America.

Join us for a discussion on author Dave Eggers's novelThe Circle.

"When Mae Holland is hired to work for the Circle, the world’s most powerful internet company, she feels she’s been given the opportunity of a lifetime. Mae can’t believe her luck, her great fortune to work for the most influential company in the world—even as life beyond the campus grows distant, even as a strange encounter with a colleague leaves her shaken, even as her role at the Circle becomes increasingly public. What begins as the captivating story of one woman’s ambition and idealism soon becomes a heart-racing novel of suspense, raising questions about memory, history, privacy, and democracy." ~Amazon

The Ames Free Library Book Club meets the second Monday of the month at 6:30 PM and the second Wednesday of the month at 1:30 every month, with the exception of July and August.

Join us for a discussion on author Bill Bryson's novelThe Circle.

"With his signature wit, charm, and seemingly limitless knowledge, Bill Bryson takes us on a room-by-room tour through his own house, using each room as a jumping off point into the vast history of the domestic artifacts we take for granted. As he takes us through the history of our modern comforts, Bryson demonstrates that whatever happens in the world eventually ends up in our home, in the paint, the pipes, the pillows, and every item of furniture. Bryson has one of the liveliest, most inquisitive minds on the planet, and his sheer prose fluency makes At Home one of the most entertaining books ever written about private life." ~Amazon
