A young Irish immigrant orphaned in New York City, Vivian was put on a train to the Midwest with hundreds of other children whose destinies would be determined by luck and chance. This book won The National Book Award for Young People and The Coretta Scott King Award for Author, and it is also an honor book for The Newbery Award and Sibert Award! It is a must read, so pick up a copy now then come discuss it with our book club.

A novel in verse. Raised in South Carolina and New York, Woodson always felt halfway home in each place. In vivid poems, she shares what it was like to grow up as an African American in the 1960s and 1970s, living with the remnants of Jim Crow and her growing awareness of the Civil Rights movement.

Poetry recitations by Rev. Dr. Gordon Postill provide a kind of “excursion" to ponder such themes as adventure, hope, death, friendship, and grief.  After each recitation (poems will be recited twice for increased exposure), there will be an opportunity for personal and group reflections.  A complete list of the poems will be provided at the end of this introspective yet interactive process.

The content and format have been specifically designed for both poetry lovers as well as for anyone else who appreciates exploring core aspects of the human condition.

Ordained by The United Church of Canada in 1980, Dr. Postill is a Board Certified Chaplain who has provided spiritual care to hospice patients and their families since 1991.  He has been the Chaplain of Old Colony Hospice in Randolph for the past twelve years and lives with his wife Robin in Duxbury.

Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, The Bully Pulpit : Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the golden age of journalism by Doris Kearns Goodwin. This discussion will continue on our next meeting, March 24th.

The bully pulpitThe gap between rich and poor has never been wider...legislative stalemate paralyzes the country...corporations resist federal regulations...spectacular mergers produce giant companies...the influence of money in politics deepens...bombs explode in crowded streets...small wars proliferate far from our shores...a dizzying array of inventions speeds the pace of daily life. These unnervingly familiar headlines serve as the backdrop for Doris Kearns Goodwin's highly anticipated The Bully Pulpit -a dynamic history of the first decade of the Progressive era, that tumultuous time when the nation was coming unseamed and reform was in the air. The story is told through the intense friendship of Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft-a close relationship that strengthens both men before it ruptures in 1912, when they engage in a brutal fight for the presidential nomination that divides their wives, their children, and their closest friends, while crippling the progressive wing of the Republican Party, causing Democrat Woodrow Wilson to be elected, and changing the country's history. The Bully Pulpit is also the story of the muckraking press, which arouses the spirit of reform that helps Roosevelt push the government to shed its laissez-faire attitude toward robber barons, corrupt politicians, and corporate exploiters of our natural resources.

The Council on Aging Book Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM. Our Meetings take place at Frothingham Hall, 15 Barrows Street, N. Easton, MA. We welcome all new members!

In March we will discuss Kit who represents America’s Great Depression era. Kit refers to herself as not being “flouncy.” She is very much a tomboy who enjoys baseball and likes when boys are around because she believes they are always up to something. She is interested in everything and fancies herself a reporter and factual writer. Kit is characterized as having a “can-do attitude.”

In the face of high debt, a sluggish economy, and the high number of graduates either back with or still living with parents, home purchasing is an important step, and one that requires a great deal of information, preparation, and careful planning. This one-time program is designed to teach parents to teach their kids what initial steps are needed to start this process. Whether you're looking to give help or get it, attend and bring your questions!

Longtime Realtor Denise Higgins from Goodwin Realty Group will break down the entire process; from researching and locating a property, explaining debt-to-income ratios, to uncovering the hidden costs of ownership, let her help you get into a home of your very own.

Contact: Ames Free Library   508-238-2000   info@amesfreelibrary.org

Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism by Doris Kearns Goodwin. This discussion is a continuations from our meeting on February 24th.

Contact: Ames Free Library   508-238-2000   info@amesfreelibrary.org

Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, The leftovers by Tom Perrotta.

The leftoversWhat if--whoosh, right now, with no explanation--a number of us simply vanished? Would some of us collapse? Would others of us go on, one foot in front of the other, as we did before the world turned upside down? That's what the bewildered citizens of Mapleton, who lost many of their neighbors, friends and lovers in the event known as the Sudden Departure, have to figure out. Because nothing has been the same since it happened--not marriages, not friendships, not even the relationships between parents and children. Kevin Garvey, Mapleton's new mayor, wants to speed up the healing process, to bring a sense of renewed hope and purpose to his traumatized community. Kevin's own family has fallen apart in the wake of the disaster: his wife, Laurie, has left to join the Guilty Remnant, a homegrown cult whose members take a vow of silence; his son, Tom, is gone, too, dropping out of college to follow a sketchy prophet named Holy Wayne. Only Kevin's teenaged daughter, Jill, remains, and she's definitely not the sweet "A" student she used to be. Kevin wants to help her, but he's distracted by his growing relationship with Nora Durst, a woman who lost her entire family on October 14th and is still reeling from the tragedy, even as she struggles to move beyond it and make a new start. With heart, intelligence and a rare ability to illuminate the struggles inherent in ordinary lives, Tom Perrotta has written a startling, thought-provoking novel about love, connection and loss.

The Council on Aging Book Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM. Our Meetings take place at Frothingham Hall, 15 Barrows Street, N. Easton, MA. We welcome all new members!

Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, The English patient by Michael Ondaatje.

The English patient

With unsettling beauty and intelligence, Michael Ondaatje's Booker Prize-winning novel traces the intersection of four damaged lives in an abandoned Italian villa at the end of World War II.The nurse Hana, exhausted by death, obsessively tends to her last surviving patient. Caravaggio, the thief, tries to reimagine who he is, now that his hands are hopelessly maimed. The Indian sapper Kip searches for hidden bombs in a landscape where nothing is safe but himself. And at the center of his labyrinth lies the English patient, nameless and hideously burned, a man who is both a riddle and a provocation to his companions--and whose memories of suffering, rescue, and betrayal illuminate this book like flashes of heat lightning.

The Council on Aging Book Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM. Our Meetings take place at Frothingham Hall, 15 Barrows Street, N. Easton, MA. We welcome all new members!

lib_book3 1:00 PM  -  2:00 PM Council on Aging Book Discussion - One summer: America, 1927 by Bill Bryson Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, One summer: America, 1927 by Bill Bryson.

One summer

The summer of 1927 began with one of the signature events of the twentieth century: on May 21, 1927, Charles Lindbergh became the first man to cross the Atlantic by plane nonstop, and when he landed in Le Bourget airfield near Paris, he ignited an explosion of worldwide rapture and instantly became the most famous person on the planet. Meanwhile, the titanically talented Babe Ruth was beginning his assault on the home run record, which would culminate on September 30 with his sixtieth blast, one of the most resonant and durable records in sports history. In between those dates a Queens housewife named Ruth Snyder and her corset-salesman lover garroted her husband, leading to a murder trial that became a huge tabloid sensation. Alvin “Shipwreck” Kelly sat atop a flagpole in Newark, New Jersey, for twelve days—a new record. The American South was clobbered by unprecedented rain and by flooding of the Mississippi basin, a great human disaster, the relief efforts for which were guided by the uncannily able and insufferably pompous Herbert Hoover. Calvin Coolidge interrupted an already leisurely presidency for an even more relaxing three-month vacation in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The gangster Al Capone tightened his grip on the illegal booze business through a gaudy and murderous reign of terror and municipal corruption. The first true “talking picture,” Al Jolson’s The Jazz Singer, was filmed and forever changed the motion picture industry. The four most powerful central bankers on earth met in secret session on a Long Island estate and made a fateful decision that virtually guaranteed a future crash and depression.
All this and much, much more transpired in that epochal summer of 1927, and Bill Bryson captures its outsized personalities, exciting events, and occasional just plain weirdness with his trademark vividness, eye for telling detail, and delicious humor. In that year America stepped out onto the world stage as the main event, and One Summer transforms it all into narrative nonfiction of the highest order.
