lib_book3 1:00 PM  -  2:00 PM Council on Aging Book Discussion - Swamplandia! by Karen Russell Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, Swamplandia! by Karen Russell

Swamplandia!Karen Russell's debut novel takes us to the swamps of the Florida Everglades and introduces us to Ava Bigtree, an unforgettable young heroine. The Bigtree alligator-wrestling dynasty is in decline, and Swamplandia!, their island home and gator-wrestling theme park, is swiftly being encroached upon by a fearsome and sophisticated competitor called the World of Darkness. Ava's mother has just died; her sister Ossie has fallen in love with the Dredgeman, who might be an actual ghost; and her big brother, Kiwi, has just defected to the World of Darkness in an effort to keep their business afloat. Ava's father, Chief Bigtree, is AWOL; leaving Ava to manage 98 gators and the vast landscape of her own grief. An utterly singular novel about a family's struggle to stay afloat in a world that is inexorably sinking.

The Council on Aging Book Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM. Our Meetings take place at Frothingham Hall, 15 Barrows Street, N. Easton, MA. We welcome all new members!

Contact: Ames Free Library   508-238-2000   info@amesfreelibrary.org

Join us as we talk about designing travel for learning and self-development, and the lessons we learn the hard way. Like much of human existence, travel, by itself, does not lead to growth or learning. Long life does not cause wisdom; years of travel often only reinforce xenophobic presumptions. Part of our professional mission is to develop cross-cultural awareness and facility in adolescents, and one way we do this is through short, intensive, and carefully crafted travel experiences.

Jennifer Swanson and Jim Lee are professors in the business department of Stonehill College. Jennifer directs the international business program and Jim directs the management program. Both have lived and taught abroad, and individually and together they have traveled with students in Europe, Asia, North Africa, and Central and South America.

Hazel and Gus share a sarcastic sense of humor, a distaste for the conventional, and ultimately a love that sweeps them on an unforgettable journey. Although the two teens face unlikely challenges, their courage and dedication to each other prove that while life isn't perfect, love can still be extraordinary in this powerfully moving film based on John Green's New York Times best-selling novel.

When Jax wakes up to a world without any people in it, he assumes it's the zombie apocalypse. But when he runs into his eighteen-year-old guardian, Riley Pendare, he learns that he's really in the eighth day—an extra day sandwiched between Wednesday and Thursday. Some people—like Jax and Riley—are Transitioners, able to live in all eight days, while others, including Evangeline, the elusive teenage girl who's been hiding in the house next door, exist only on this special day.

The Ames Free Library is honored to present Thomas McNeely, author of Ghost Horse, winner of the 2013 Gival Press Award.

Set amidst the social tensions of 1970’s Houston, GHOST HORSE tells the story of eleven-year-old Buddy Turner’s shifting alliances within his fragmented family and with two other boys – one white, one Latino – in their quest to make a Super-8 animated movie. As his father’s many secrets begin to unravel, Buddy discovers the “real movie”: the intersection between life as he sees it and the truth of his own past. In a vivid story of love, friendship and betrayal, GHOST HORSE explores a boy’s swiftly changing awareness of himself and the world, through the lens of imagination.

Free and open to all.

lib_book3 1:00 PM  -  2:00 PM Council on Aging Book Discussion - Flash boys: a Wall Street revolt by Michael Lewis Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, Flash boys: a Wall Street revolt by Michael Lewis

Flash BoysFlash Boys is about a small group of Wall Street guys who figure out that the U.S. stock market has been rigged for the benefit of insiders and that, post-financial crisis, the markets have become not more free but less, and more controlled by the big Wall Street banks. Working at different firms, they come to this realization separately; but after they discover one another, the flash boys band together and set out to reform the financial markets. This they do by creating an exchange in which high-frequency trading--source of the most intractable problems--will have no advantage whatsoever. The characters in Flash Boys are fabulous, each completely different from what you think of when you think "Wall Street guy." Several have walked away from jobs in the financial sector that paid them millions of dollars a year. From their new vantage point they investigate the big banks, the world's stock exchanges, and high-frequency trading firms as they have never been investigated, and expose the many strange new ways that Wall Street generates profits. The light that Lewis shines into the darkest corners of the financial world may not be good for your blood pressure, because if you have any contact with the market, even a retirement account, this story is happening to you. But in the end, Flash Boys is an uplifting read. Here are people who have somehow preserved a moral sense in an environment where you don't get paid for that; they have perceived an institutionalized injustice and are willing to go to war to fix it.

The Council on Aging Book Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM. Our Meetings take place at Frothingham Hall, 15 Barrows Street, N. Easton, MA. We welcome all new members!

"When Mae Holland is hired to work for the Circle, the world’s most powerful internet company, she feels she’s been given the opportunity of a lifetime. Mae can’t believe her luck, her great fortune to work for the most influential company in the world—even as life beyond the campus grows distant, even as a strange encounter with a colleague leaves her shaken, even as her role at the Circle becomes increasingly public. What begins as the captivating story of one woman’s ambition and idealism soon becomes a heart-racing novel of suspense, raising questions about memory, history, privacy, and democracy." ~Amazon

Before I go to sleep"As I sleep, my mind will erase everything I did today. I will wake up tomorrow as I did this morning. Thinking I'm still a child. Thinking I have a whole lifetime of choice ahead of me. . . ." Memories define us. So what if you lost yours every time you went to sleep? Your name, your identity, your past, even the people you love--all forgotten overnight. And the one person you trust may be telling you only half the story. Welcome to Christine's life.

"With his signature wit, charm, and seemingly limitless knowledge, Bill Bryson takes us on a room-by-room tour through his own house, using each room as a jumping off point into the vast history of the domestic artifacts we take for granted. As he takes us through the history of our modern comforts, Bryson demonstrates that whatever happens in the world eventually ends up in our home, in the paint, the pipes, the pillows, and every item of furniture. Bryson has one of the liveliest, most inquisitive minds on the planet, and his sheer prose fluency makes At Home one of the most entertaining books ever written about private life." ~Amazon

lib_book3 1:00 PM  -  2:00 PM Council on Aging Book Discussion - The bully pulpit by Doris Kearns Goodwin, pt.1 Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, The bully pulpit : Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the golden age of journalism by Doris Kearns Goodwin. This discussion will continue on our next meeting, March 24th.

The bully pulpitThe gap between rich and poor has never been wider...legislative stalemate paralyzes the country...corporations resist federal regulations...spectacular mergers produce giant companies...the influence of money in politics deepens...bombs explode in crowded streets...small wars proliferate far from our shores...a dizzying array of inventions speeds the pace of daily life. These unnervingly familiar headlines serve as the backdrop for Doris Kearns Goodwin's highly anticipated The Bully Pulpit -a dynamic history of the first decade of the Progressive era, that tumultuous time when the nation was coming unseamed and reform was in the air. The story is told through the intense friendship of Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft-a close relationship that strengthens both men before it ruptures in 1912, when they engage in a brutal fight for the presidential nomination that divides their wives, their children, and their closest friends, while crippling the progressive wing of the Republican Party, causing Democrat Woodrow Wilson to be elected, and changing the country's history. The Bully Pulpit is also the story of the muckraking press, which arouses the spirit of reform that helps Roosevelt push the government to shed its laissez-faire attitude toward robber barons, corrupt politicians, and corporate exploiters of our natural resources.

The Council on Aging Book Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM. Our Meetings take place at Frothingham Hall, 15 Barrows Street, N. Easton, MA. We welcome all new members!

lib_book3 1:00 PM  -  2:00 PM Council on Aging Book Discussion - The Bully Pulpit by Doris Kearns Goodwin, pt.2 Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism by Doris Kearns Goodwin. This discussion is a continuations from our meeting on February 24th.

Easton, MA. We welcome all new members!

lib_book3 1:00 PM  -  2:00 PM Council on Aging Book Discussion - The leftovers by Tom Perrotta Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, The leftovers by Tom Perrotta.

The leftoversWhat if--whoosh, right now, with no explanation--a number of us simply vanished? Would some of us collapse? Would others of us go on, one foot in front of the other, as we did before the world turned upside down? That's what the bewildered citizens of Mapleton, who lost many of their neighbors, friends and lovers in the event known as the Sudden Departure, have to figure out. Because nothing has been the same since it happened--not marriages, not friendships, not even the relationships between parents and children. Kevin Garvey, Mapleton's new mayor, wants to speed up the healing process, to bring a sense of renewed hope and purpose to his traumatized community. Kevin's own family has fallen apart in the wake of the disaster: his wife, Laurie, has left to join the Guilty Remnant, a homegrown cult whose members take a vow of silence; his son, Tom, is gone, too, dropping out of college to follow a sketchy prophet named Holy Wayne. Only Kevin's teenaged daughter, Jill, remains, and she's definitely not the sweet "A" student she used to be. Kevin wants to help her, but he's distracted by his growing relationship with Nora Durst, a woman who lost her entire family on October 14th and is still reeling from the tragedy, even as she struggles to move beyond it and make a new start. With heart, intelligence and a rare ability to illuminate the struggles inherent in ordinary lives, Tom Perrotta has written a startling, thought-provoking novel about love, connection and loss.

The Council on Aging Book Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM. Our Meetings take place at Frothingham Hall, 15 Barrows Street, N. Easton, MA. We welcome all new members!

Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, The English patient by Michael Ondaatje.

The English patient

With unsettling beauty and intelligence, Michael Ondaatje's Booker Prize-winning novel traces the intersection of four damaged lives in an abandoned Italian villa at the end of World War II.The nurse Hana, exhausted by death, obsessively tends to her last surviving patient. Caravaggio, the thief, tries to reimagine who he is, now that his hands are hopelessly maimed. The Indian sapper Kip searches for hidden bombs in a landscape where nothing is safe but himself. And at the center of his labyrinth lies the English patient, nameless and hideously burned, a man who is both a riddle and a provocation to his companions--and whose memories of suffering, rescue, and betrayal illuminate this book like flashes of heat lightning.

The Council on Aging Book Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM. Our Meetings take place at Frothingham Hall, 15 Barrows Street, N. Easton, MA. We welcome all new members!

lib_book3 1:00 PM  -  2:00 PM Council on Aging Book Discussion - One summer: America, 1927 by Bill Bryson Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, One summer: America, 1927 by Bill Bryson.

One summer

The summer of 1927 began with one of the signature events of the twentieth century: on May 21, 1927, Charles Lindbergh became the first man to cross the Atlantic by plane nonstop, and when he landed in Le Bourget airfield near Paris, he ignited an explosion of worldwide rapture and instantly became the most famous person on the planet. Meanwhile, the titanically talented Babe Ruth was beginning his assault on the home run record, which would culminate on September 30 with his sixtieth blast, one of the most resonant and durable records in sports history. In between those dates a Queens housewife named Ruth Snyder and her corset-salesman lover garroted her husband, leading to a murder trial that became a huge tabloid sensation. Alvin “Shipwreck” Kelly sat atop a flagpole in Newark, New Jersey, for twelve days—a new record. The American South was clobbered by unprecedented rain and by flooding of the Mississippi basin, a great human disaster, the relief efforts for which were guided by the uncannily able and insufferably pompous Herbert Hoover. Calvin Coolidge interrupted an already leisurely presidency for an even more relaxing three-month vacation in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The gangster Al Capone tightened his grip on the illegal booze business through a gaudy and murderous reign of terror and municipal corruption. The first true “talking picture,” Al Jolson’s The Jazz Singer, was filmed and forever changed the motion picture industry. The four most powerful central bankers on earth met in secret session on a Long Island estate and made a fateful decision that virtually guaranteed a future crash and depression.
All this and much, much more transpired in that epochal summer of 1927, and Bill Bryson captures its outsized personalities, exciting events, and occasional just plain weirdness with his trademark vividness, eye for telling detail, and delicious humor. In that year America stepped out onto the world stage as the main event, and One Summer transforms it all into narrative nonfiction of the highest order.
