Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, The English patient by Michael Ondaatje.

The English patient

With unsettling beauty and intelligence, Michael Ondaatje's Booker Prize-winning novel traces the intersection of four damaged lives in an abandoned Italian villa at the end of World War II.The nurse Hana, exhausted by death, obsessively tends to her last surviving patient. Caravaggio, the thief, tries to reimagine who he is, now that his hands are hopelessly maimed. The Indian sapper Kip searches for hidden bombs in a landscape where nothing is safe but himself. And at the center of his labyrinth lies the English patient, nameless and hideously burned, a man who is both a riddle and a provocation to his companions--and whose memories of suffering, rescue, and betrayal illuminate this book like flashes of heat lightning.

The Council on Aging Book Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM. Our Meetings take place at Frothingham Hall, 15 Barrows Street, N. Easton, MA. We welcome all new members!

In The Near Enough, Michael C. Keith's latest collection of short fiction from Cold River Press, we are treated to a dizzying array of unique stories. "In one, a tantalizing phrase of music enslaves the universe, another shows us a piece of verse discovered on a rock from Mars which reveals profound secrets, and in another, endless snow prompts a city's entire population to abandon it for warmer climes." The depth and breadth of Keith's stories are a wonder to behold, and if you think he will run out of stories anytime soon, his eight previous collections tell a different tale.

Michael C. Keith is the author of more than 20 books on electronic media, numerous articles, and a growing number of short fiction collections. In addition, he is the author of an acclaimed memoir, The Next Better Place, a YA novel, Life is Falling Sideways, and eight story collections. He has been nominated for two Pushcart Prizes, a PEN/O.Henry Award, and was a finalist for the National Indie Excellence Award for short fiction anthology. lib_book3 1:00 PM  -  2:00 PM Council on Aging Book Discussion - One summer: America, 1927 by Bill Bryson Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, One summer: America, 1927 by Bill Bryson.

One summer

The summer of 1927 began with one of the signature events of the twentieth century: on May 21, 1927, Charles Lindbergh became the first man to cross the Atlantic by plane nonstop, and when he landed in Le Bourget airfield near Paris, he ignited an explosion of worldwide rapture and instantly became the most famous person on the planet. Meanwhile, the titanically talented Babe Ruth was beginning his assault on the home run record, which would culminate on September 30 with his sixtieth blast, one of the most resonant and durable records in sports history. In between those dates a Queens housewife named Ruth Snyder and her corset-salesman lover garroted her husband, leading to a murder trial that became a huge tabloid sensation. Alvin “Shipwreck” Kelly sat atop a flagpole in Newark, New Jersey, for twelve days—a new record. The American South was clobbered by unprecedented rain and by flooding of the Mississippi basin, a great human disaster, the relief efforts for which were guided by the uncannily able and insufferably pompous Herbert Hoover. Calvin Coolidge interrupted an already leisurely presidency for an even more relaxing three-month vacation in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The gangster Al Capone tightened his grip on the illegal booze business through a gaudy and murderous reign of terror and municipal corruption. The first true “talking picture,” Al Jolson’s The Jazz Singer, was filmed and forever changed the motion picture industry. The four most powerful central bankers on earth met in secret session on a Long Island estate and made a fateful decision that virtually guaranteed a future crash and depression.
All this and much, much more transpired in that epochal summer of 1927, and Bill Bryson captures its outsized personalities, exciting events, and occasional just plain weirdness with his trademark vividness, eye for telling detail, and delicious humor. In that year America stepped out onto the world stage as the main event, and One Summer transforms it all into narrative nonfiction of the highest order.

The Council on Aging Book Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM. Our Meetings take place at Frothingham Hall, 15 Barrows Street, N. Easton, MA. We welcome all new members!

The Ames Free Library Author Talk Series is proud to present Ken Liu, author of The Grace of Kings.

Two men rebel together against tyranny—and then become rivals—in this first sweeping book of an epic fantasy series from Ken Liu, recipient of Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy awards.

Polar opposites, bandit Kuni Garu, and son of a deposed duke Mata Zyndu, become best friends after a series of adventures fighting against vast conscripted armies, silk-draped airships, and shapeshifting gods. Once the emperor has been overthrown, however, they each find themselves the leader of separate factions—two sides with very different ideas about how the world should be run and the meaning of justice.

Fans of intrigue, intimate plots, and action will find a new series to embrace in the Dandelion Dynasty.

Free and open to all!

Ken Liu’s fiction has appeared in Asimov’s, Analog, Strange Horizons, Lightspeed, and Clarkesworld, among others. He has won a Nebula, two Hugos, a World Fantasy Award, a Science Fiction & Fantasy Translation Award, and been nominated for the Sturgeon and the Locus Awards. His wife, Lisa Tang Liu, is an artist. He lives in Stoughton with his family.
