lib_book3 1:00 PM  -  2:00 PM Council on Aging Book Discussion - The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman.

Over five years in the writing, The Dovekeepers is Alice Hoffman's most ambitious and mesmerizing novel, a tour de force of imagination and research, set in ancient Israel. In 70 C.E., nine hundred Jews held out for months against armies of Romans on Masada, a mountain in the Judean desert. According to the ancient historian Josephus, two women and five children survived. Based on this tragic and iconic event, Hoffman's novel is a spellbinding tale of four extraordinarily bold, resourceful, and sensuous women, each of whom has come to Masada by a different path. The lives of these four complex and fiercely independent women intersect in the desperate days of the siege. All are dovekeepers, and all are also keeping secrets-about who they are, where they come from, who fathered them, and whom they love. The Dovekeepers is Alice Hoffman's masterpiece.

The Council on Aging Book Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM. Our Meetings take place at Frothingham Hall, 15 Barrows Street, N. Easton, MA. We welcome all new members!

Contact: Ames Free Library   508-238-2000   info@amesfreelibrary.org

The Ames Free Library Foodie Group is pleased to welcome Marvin Rudolph, author of Pop Rocks. Mr. Rudolph will present the story behind the invention of Pop Rocks: “William A (Bill) Mitchell invented Pop Rocks Crackling Candy in 1956 as an attempt to create an instant carbonated drink.  The fruit-flavored candy contained entrapped bubbles of carbon dioxide, which when released created tiny explosions with sound effects.  As a research chemist at General Foods during the Pop Rocks heyday, Marvin J. Rudolph led a group assigned to bring Pop Rocks out of the laboratory and into the manufacturing plant.  Drawing on interviews with food technologists, engineers, marketing managers, and members of Bill Mitchell’s family, Rudolph takes readers from the day Pop Rocks were invented to the present day.” If you were a child of the late 50's and 60's and experienced the early versions of Pop Rocks that were on the market, you may have some effervescent stories to share! This program is free and open to the public.

Join us for a discussion of The Seventh Level by Jody Feldman

Lauer Middle School has a super-secret society—The Legend. No one knows who is in it. Or how they pull off the spectacular school-wide events. Seventh grader Travis Raines may be about to find out. A mysterious message appears in his locker. You have been chosen, it says. And it gives him a mind-bending puzzle to solve and a challenge. Travis could become legendary. If he completes all the tasks—and stays out of trouble. The assistant principal has her eye on him. So do his parents. And Travis isn’t very good at staying out of trouble.

And then there’s the biggest puzzle of all: What if the messages aren’t from The Legend? Is someone trying to take Travis down?

Come join us for a discussion on this month's selected book, Book of Ages: the Life and Opinion of Jane Franklin by Jill Lepore.

National Book Award Finalist - From one of our most accomplished and widely admired historians, a revelatory portrait of Benjamin Franklin's youngest sister and a history of history itself. Like her brother, Jane Franklin was a passionate reader, a gifted writer, and an astonishingly shrewd political commentator. Making use of an amazing cache of little-studied material, including documents, objects, and portraits only just discovered, Jill Lepore brings Jane Franklin to life in a way that illuminates not only this one woman but an entire world - a world usually lost to history. Lepore's life of Jane Franklin, with its strikingly original vantage on her remarkable brother, is at once a wholly different account of the founding of the United States and one of the great untold stories of American history and letters: a life unknown.

The Council on Aging Book Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM. Our Meetings take place at Frothingham Hall, 15 Barrows Street, N. Easton, MA. We welcome all new members!

"Twenty years ago, four teenagers at summer camp walked into the woods at night. Two were found murdered, and the others were never seen again. Two decades later, survivor Paul Copeland, now the county prosecutor of Essex, NJ, is dealing with raising his six- year-old daughter as a single father after his wife has died of cancer. Balancing family life and a career as a prosecutor distracts him from his past traumas, but only for so long. When a homicide victim is found with evidence linking him to Copeland, the well-buried secrets of the prosecutor's family are threatened.
Is this homicide victim one of the campers who disappeared with his sister? Could his sister be alive? Cope has to confront what he left behind twenty years ago, and decide what is better left hidden in the dark and what truths can be brought to light." ~ Goodreads

Join us as we talk about designing travel for learning and self-development, and the lessons we learn the hard way. Like much of human existence, travel, by itself, does not lead to growth or learning. Long life does not cause wisdom; years of travel often only reinforce xenophobic presumptions. Part of our professional mission is to develop cross-cultural awareness and facility in adolescents, and one way we do this is through short, intensive, and carefully crafted travel experiences.

Jennifer Swanson and Jim Lee are professors in the business department of Stonehill College. Jennifer directs the international business program and Jim directs the management program. Both have lived and taught abroad, and individually and together they have traveled with students in Europe, Asia, North Africa, and Central and South America.

As he takes us through the history of our modern comforts, Bryson demonstrates that whatever happens in the world eventually ends up in our home, in the paint, the pipes, the pillows, and every item of furniture.
