Speaker is Dr. John Rathgeb from the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick, Maryland.  ~~The Museum is the premier center for the preservation and research of the legacy of Civil War Medical innovation and humanitarianism. As a living institution, they utilize artifacts, storytelling and the historic lessons derived from that era to educate the public and define the impact on today’s society. Dr. Rathgeb will give an overview of the work and challenges of surgeons and medical personnel during the Civil War.  Learn about diseases and the medicines used to treat them, surgeries and amputations, soldiers’ food and nutrition, and more.  This talk also examines how Dr. Jonathan Letterman led the introduction of the first system of staged evacuation and treatment for mass casualties. Light refreshments served. Registration not required. Free and open to the public. 2nd Saturday Lecture Series made possible by the Massey Charitable Trust.

~~Sherrie Flick is a fiction writer, food writer, and freelance writer and copy editor living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her book publications include the flash fiction chapbook "I Call This Flirting, Reconsidering Happiness: A Novel," and the short story collection "Whiskey, Etc." (Queen’s Ferry Press, 2016.) Her food writing appears in Ploughshares, Pittsburgh Quarterly, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and NEXTPittsburgh as well as the anthology "Fried Walleye and Cherry Pie: Midwestern Writers on Food."

~~Tawni O’Dell is the New York Times bestselling author of six novels including "Back Roads," which was an Oprah’s Book Club pick and a Book-of-the-Month Club Main Selection. Back Roads is currently in development to be made into a film by Michael Ohoven, the producer of the Academy-Award-winning, Capote. She is also a contributor to several anthologies including "Becoming Myself: Reflections on Growing Up Female." Her works have been published in over 40 countries.

West Side Stories is partnering with the Carnegie Salvation Army. Please bring a donation of non-expired/non-perishable food items, diapers (all sizes) or personal hygiene items.

The Library resumes our Brown Bag Lunch Lecture with an interesting look back at Pittsburgh and her environment. Speaker is Ed Schroth, winner of the Pennsylvania Environmental Council Award for his more than 50 years of service as a biology teacher at Quaker Valley High School and Duquesne University. The council called Schroth “one of the most popular and influential environmental educators in Western Pennsylvania.” Coffee, tea and water will be provided. Free and open to the public.
