misc_none Creative Writing class with Oscar Casares Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend
    Contact: Eduardo R. del Rio   956-882-8843   eduardo.delrio@utb.edu
Brownsville native and author Oscar Casares will teach a course this summer at The University of Texas at Brownsville. Casares will teach creative writing during the first session of summer classes. The first two weeks of the course will be taught via video conferencing. He will be on campus for the last three weeks of the course. The first session of summer classes begins Monday, June 3, and ends Monday, July 8.

"I've now been teaching for over 10 years, and I can't think of a class that I've been more excited about teaching than I am about the one at UTB,” said Casares. “In preparing for this summer course, I've been thinking a great deal about what I want to share with the students and what I think would've been helpful for me way back then. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone and hearing their stories."

Casares, the author of two critically acclaimed books of fiction, teaches and directs the Master of Fine Arts program in English at the University of Texas at Austin.

Born and raised in the Brownsville, he is the author of a novel and a collection of stories, which have earned him fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Copernicus Society of America, and the Texas Institute of Letters.

“Having Oscar Casares in the English Department this summer is a wonderful opportunity for our students,” said Dr. Eduardo R. del Rio, Chair of the Department of English.” He has received multiple awards for his work, and his writing explores local themes that our students can readily identify with. It will be a unique experience for young
developing writers.”

His collection of stories, “Brownsville”, was selected by the American Library Association as a Notable Book of 2004 and earned critical praise from such publications as The New York Times, Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle and Entertainment Weekly. His first novel, “Amigoland”, received a "starred review" from Publishers Weekly and was later selected by the 2010 Mayor's Book Club in Austin for that year's citywide reading campaign.

Since 2003, Casares’ essays have appeared in The New York Times, Texas Monthly, and on "All Things Considered" for National Public Radio. He is also a contributing writer for Texas Monthly.

Casares received an Associate of Arts degree from Texas Southmost College in 1984. He continued his studies and was awarded a bachelor’s degree in advertising at The University of Texas at Austin in 1987. In 2001, Casares earned his Master of Fine Arts from the Iowa Writers' Workshop. A year later he was awarded a six-month fellowship at the Dobie Paisano Ranch near Austin, named for the famed Texas storyteller, where he completed the “Brownsville”  collection.

For more information, contact Dr. Eduardo R. del Rio, Chair of the Department of English, at 956-882-8843 or eduardo.delrio@utb.edu.

YOUNG ARTIST SUMMER CAMP AT THE WESLACO MUSEUM

The Weslaco Museum at 500 S. Texas Blvd. will hold a summer camp for young artists ages 10-17 throughout the months of June and July.  Registrations for the camp are open and recommended due to limited space.  Classes are set to start on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 and will last five weeks, until July 19

The young artist summer camp will consist of art classes taught by a professional artist who is experienced in the art field.  Young artists will explore a variety of different mediums such as acrylic paint, pencil, and charcoal as well as learn new techniques they can implement in their artwork.  There are many reasons why the arts are an important factor in the development of children’s full potential.  The arts are one of the main ways that humans define who they are, and often are used as a form of self-expression.

Classes include one-on-one time with the art instructor, all materials needed for weekly lessons, access to lectures and presentations during class time to supplement the art lessons, and snacks.  Children may be registered at the Weslaco Museum; each week costs $50.00 per child, or $210.00 for the entire five weeks.  Classes will be held Tuesday through Friday from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm. For more information, or to register for the young artist summer camp, please call 968-9142 or email the programs coordinator at programs@weslacomuseum.org.

The Weslaco Museum is open at 500 S. Texas Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and college students, $2 for children 5-17 and free to children under 5.  Admission is free on first Saturdays of the month, and for special programs.
