Contact: UTRGV Office of Public Art   956-665-2353

UTRGV Office of Public Art is hosting a new art exhibit at the UTRGV Performing Arts Complex Lobby on the Edinburg Campus called DreamScapes, a posthumous celebration of the lives and talents of a family of area artists – Maxine McClendon, Edward Edson Nichols and Christopher Nichols.

  • McClendon was an internationally renowned artist well-known for her acrylic on stuffed canvas.
  • Her husband, Edward, was an art professor at UTRGV legacy institution UT Pan American for 33 years, making an impact on hundreds of artists in South Texas before retiring from teaching in 1999.
  • And their son Christopher, a UTPA alumnus, was known for his watercolor scenes.

Dr. Dahlia Guerra, assistant vice president for Public Art, said this exhibit is a wonderful way to view the landscape through the eyes of three people who obviously loved the area.

“The artistic creations of the Nichols family celebrate the beautiful landscapes and traditions of the Rio Grande Valley and Mexico,” she said. “We invite the public to join us for an opening reception on Thursday, Sept. 19, 6-9 p.m.”

The exhibit, curated by Elena Macias, professor of art in the UTRGV School of Art, runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and during all evening concerts.

The exhibit will run through February 7, 2020.

For more information on the exhibit, contact the UTRGV Office of Public Art at 956-665-2353.

The South Texas College Art Department presents “¡Atención, Detención!” an art exhibition featuring works by artist, Angel Cabrales. The exhibit opens on September 30, and will be available to view Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. until October 24, 2019, at the Art Department Gallery located on the Pecan Campus, building B-103.

In 2009, Angel Cabrales received an MFA from the University of North Texas, and is currently an Assistant Professor of Sculpture at the University of Texas - El Paso. He has exhibited his artwork in many cities throughout the Southwest.

¡Atención, Detención! merges two installations that were created years apart and speaks on immigration issues that have been around for decades. Fencing materials are used in Cabrales' work as an allegory for child detention centers and the militarization of the U.S. and Mexican border.

On Thursday, October 3rd from 5:30-6:30PM, an art forum featuring Angel Cabrales, Veronica Cardenas, and Pedro Perez will take place at the Pecan Campus in the library’s Rainbow Room, Building F.

A one-of-a-kind event is happening October 20, for monarch butterflies and monarch lovers alike -- a team of Monarch Ultra runners, joined by Harlingen cardiologist and avid marathon and triathlon participant, Dr. Charles Mild, will jog into Pharr, arriving at St. George Orthodox Church at 704 West Sam Houston at 5:30 p.m.

Other local runners joining Mild for the last leg of the day’s run will be Jose Uribe, from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and high school science teacher and Texas Master Naturalist Angel Guzman.

The Monarch Ultra runners and support team will then join an educational fair in the church parking lot. The fair is open to the public beginning at 5 p.m. A hearty lineup of local organizations will set up booths at the fair.

Sponsored by South Texas Border Chapter of Texas Master Naturalist, organizations that will be represented are U.S. Fish and Wildlife’s Urban Ranger program from Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge in Alamo; the two Valley Texas Master Naturalist Chapters, South Texas Border Chapter and Rio Grande Valley Chapter; Deep South Texas Master Gardeners program of Hidalgo County; and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.

Also providing informational booths will be the National Butterfly Center in Mission; Edinburg Wetland World Birding Center; San Juan, Alamo (PSJA) School System's Pollinator Garden Program plus students from various disciplines including music, runners, and science; Hugh Ramsey Nature Park of Harlingen; the local Milkweed and Monarch Organization; Quinta Mazatlán in McAllen; and the National Wildlife Federation.

The family-friendly event is open to the public and free of charge.

The main Monarch Ultra runner of the day will be Clay Williams. Monarch Ultra is the first attempt to run across North America (Canada, United States and Mexico) in order to raise awareness of monarch butterflies who make the migratory journey every year.

Pharr is the last stop the team will make before heading across the border to Mexico. The Monarch Ultra started in Peterborough, Ontario, and will end in the Sierra Madre Mountains in Mexico, with runners following the same migration route as monarch butterflies.

Fifty to 70 ultra-runners will each run a leg of 50 or 100 kilometers of the 47-day adventure through a diversity of landscapes including mountain paths, forests, meadows, deserts, and cities.

This fall, a team of film-makers, runners, and pollinator advocates will be telling the story of the flight of the monarch butterfly as seen through the eyes of Ultra runners who will run the same distance of 2,671 miles from southern Ontario to central Mexico. More about the Monarch Ultra team is available at http://www.themonarchultra.com/about-us.html.

The public also is invited to a 7:30 p.m. ceremony in the church hall. Carlotta James, Monarch Ultra project director, co-founder and marathon runner will begin the program.

Several years ago, the National Wildlife Federation challenged city mayors across America to sign a monarch pledge in that their city would support habitats to help save the iconic monarch butterfly from further decline.

Harlingen’s Mayor Chris Boswell is the most recent and 500thsignatory of the mayors’ monarch pledge. He will be a speaker at the ceremony. Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez of Pharr and Mayor Jim Darling of McAllen also have signed the pledge, with McAllen becoming a Monarch Butterfly Champion City, one of only a few cities with this highest designation in Texas.

During the ceremony, Javier De Leon, Supervisor for Estero Llano Grande State Park; Quinta Mazatlán’s Urban Ecologist John Brush; Allen Williams, Urban Habitat Specialist with PSJA; and Gisela Chapa, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Urban Ranger Project at Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge, will speak briefly of area monarch projects.

A Bold and Important Masterwork
Composer and pianist Clara Schumann was Johannes Brahms' lifelong confidant and (some say) love interest. When she played the piano version of his third symphony for the first time, she was mesmerized and wrote to him that, "all the movements seem to be of one piece, one beat of the heart."

Maestro Dabrowski describes Brahms' third symphony as a "musicians' symphony" because it is so rewarding and exciting for them to play. Hear the VSO musicians perform this bold and important masterwork on October 25!

The Signature Bond Sound
“The Best of Bond,” featuring the music of John Barry, includes academy-award winning themes from the films "Live and Let Die," "007," "Thunderball," and more. Barry is said to have created the true “Bond sound,” a combination of bold jazz, blaring brass, and lush strings that perfectly accompanies the perilous adventures of the world’s most iconic spy.

Described as an "amazing virtuoso" by the world-renowned Nikolai Petrov and having a "complex, vigorous and demanding energetic attitude at the piano" by Brazilian newspaper Correio Brasilense, Polina Bespalko is rapidly establishing herself as one of piano's brightest stars.

Ms. Bespalko began her performance career at the age of 8 and appeared regularly in the most prestigious venues in Russia, including performances in Bolshoi Hall and for the Orthodox Patriarch Alexy II at the age of 13. Polina made her American debut in 1998 as an honored member of the Russian-US Cultural Music Exchange. This launched a period of intense U.S. concertizing, including two performances at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.

Ms. Bespalko currently remains on the piano faculty of Xavier University in Cincinnati, while also serving as the Director of the Xavier University Music Series.
