Filmmakers from around the world shared their knowledge and experiences with festival goers. The festival also celebrated its 2nd annual screenwriting competition The Pitch where the winner received a cash prize for production support.

On its 5th Anniversary, the STXIFF goes from an “Emerging” film festival to the “Established” category and as such will include great movies, inspiring workshops, fulfilling networking opportunities and awesome celebrity guests!  So, mark your calendars, for this amazing motion picture affair because if you love movies as much as we do, you don’t want to miss it!

The internationally acclaimed Symphony of Colors is opening on Saturday, January 19, 2019, in association with in association with the Hermes Music Foundation, the Secretaria de Cultura en Mexico, and the Festival de Música Contemporánea para un Mundo MejorOne of the most important purposes of a museum is to preserve the cultural inheritance of our humanity. This global mission has no borders, or divisions. The museum’s proximity to Mexico, and the wonderful opportunity to offer a taste of the indigenous art of Huichols resonates particularly well with our community.

Boldly colorful and meditative patterns of intricate bead-work created by Huichol artists, placed on musical instruments interfaces this visual ancient art form with an auditory experience. The work is deeply inspiring and opens a dialog about the important role of the arts in fostering creativity, joy, contemplation, healing and imagination.

World-renown sculptor Sebastián writes about the exhibition, “The Huichols have given our country an enormous strength in the color and design ability, and in the whole cosmogony of the expression of what they design, turning the Wixárika culture into a fundamental base for many and very great artists. For all these reasons, Huichol is a great town in our country. The soul stirring art exhibit of the Wixárika people awakens in each of us the sacred and the divine. Their ancient art, so vibrant in color and rich in symbolism, combined with musical instruments, effortlessly draws you into their compelling world of magic and myth. These works of art are the true expression and soul of humanity.”

During this exhibition, the IMAS will be offering workshops led by Huichol artists. The Huichol artists will share about their technique and use of symbols to further enhance our understanding of one of the most preserved indigenous art forms of the ancient Mexican pre-Hispanic cultures: the Wixárika (Huichol).

Symphony of Color is comprised of a collection of over 40 musical instruments that have been decorated with colorful beads by artisans from the Wixárika community, also known as Huicholes. Each musical instrument is a depiction of the Wixárika culture an art and is deeply embedded with their beliefs. The Hermes Music Foundation supports the Wixárika community by employing the Wixárika artists, selling the instruments and returning the funds to their community. The exhibit is made possible by the generous sponsorship of the Charles Clark Chevrolet Co., and Clark Knapp Honda. Symphony of Color was organized by the Hermes Music Foundation through the support of the Secretaria de Cultura en Mexico and the Festival de Música Contemporánea para un Mundo Mejor. Symphony of Color was organized by the Hermes Music Foundation through the support of the Secretaria de Cultura en Mexico and the Festival de Música Contemporánea para un Mundo Mejor.     Contact:    956-393-9047

Professor Timothy Brush, Ph. D., is guest speaker for the January 21, meeting of the Texas Master Naturalist South Texas Border Chapter.

Brush’s presentation, “What’s new with Valley birds,” will take a look at the change concurrently happening within birding communities of the Lower Rio Grande Valley, and the broader trend as birds begin to expand and contract their ranges.

Although human alterations have impacted some birds negatively, according to Brush, others have taken advantage of their new environment, he said. Hear how some of your favorite local Valley specialty birds have been holding their own or making a move. Brush also will talk about his research methods and how interested citizens can help.

Brush is a professor of biology at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg, where his research and emphasis include ecology, conservation, and riparian corridors of birds along the Lower Rio Grande Valley. He has particular interest in the changing bird distributions and effects of habitat restoration.

In addition, Brush assists with bird banding studies. He has written numerous scientific articles, and is the author of “Nesting Birds of a Tropical Frontier, the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas.”

Brush’s presentation begins at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited, free, beginning with a 6 p.m. social and to the general meeting after the presentation.

The meeting is at St. George Orthodox Church Hall, 704 W. Sam Houston, in Pharr. For more information visit http://www.stbctmn.org/.

The Malpass Brothers don’t just sound retro … they are retro!  Their smooth vocal blend, skillful musicianship, and off-the-cuff quips are reminiscent of many country legends to whom they pay tribute.  The Malpass Brothers toured with the late Don Helms, former steel guitarist for Hank Williams, have opened for music legend Merle Haggard on multiple tours, and appeared on stages from the Shetland Islands to the Ryman Auditorium to Merlefest. Gifted musicians and songwriters, the brothers have shared billing with country music legends like Ray Price, Willie Nelson, Doyle Lawson, Rhonda Vincent, Marty Stuart, Doc Watson and more. The title cut video from their album Memory That Bad hit CMT Pure Country’s Top Ten. Their most recent self-titled recording, produced by bluegrass legend Doyle Lawson, was released by Crossroads’ Organic Records in 2015.  This will be a wonderful evening of old-time gospel music, songs made famous by Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, Hank Williams, and other classic country artists, plus some new Malpass tunes.
