The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox by Maggie O'Farrell.

Iris Lockhart, a young Scottish woman, is suddenly informed that she has the power of attorney for her great aunt, Esme Lennox—who Iris never knew existed. Esme has been locked away in a mental institution for over 60 years—a fact never mentioned by her sister Kitty, Iris' grandmother, who now has Alzheimer's. In compelling prose, O'Farrell gradually pieces together the puzzle of Esme's life up to the age of 16, when her cold and repressive parents sent her away to the hospital that is now closing down. Esme had a bold and independent spirit, unseemly for a girl at that time. That as well as a younger brother who died in her arms and a never-mentioned rape contributed to her lost life—a life "half strangled by what-ifs." A gripping read with superbly crafted scenes that will blaze in the reader's memory long after the novel is returned to the shelf.

Books available one month prior to the meeting.

Confessions Of A Jane Austin Addict

Talk about an out-of-body experience. One moment Courtney Stone is a modern-day L.A. career woman lamenting a lost love; the next she is Jane Mansfield, a well-to-do, willowy (though not particularly buxom, unlike her twentieth-century namesake) lady in nineteenth-century England. What could account for this transplant of time and place? Courtney has no opportunity to ruminate over such matters; she must quickly learn to interact with inhabitants of the brave old world in which she finds herself. There's her mother, determined to marry 30-year-old Jane off to handsome Mr. Edgeworth; her artist father, more inclined to his daughter's free-spirited frame of mind; and faithful servant Miss Barnes, who helps her mistress manage everything from chaperones to corsets. (Thank goodness Jane has read Pride and Prejudice more than a dozen times.) It's not long before Jane finds the lines blurred between her two vastly different selves. Like her heroine, debut author Rigler boasts an obsession with the novels of Jane Austen.

Book will be available one month prior to meeting.

    Contact: Portage Lakes BranchLibrary   330-644-7050

Whether you love Valentine's Day or you loathe it, there will be fun activities for you to do. All Valentine's Day lovers wear red, and all Un-Valentine's Day loathers wear black. This will help set the mood. (You don't have to wear either color if you don't want to.) For those of you who fall somewhere in the middle, that's great! You get to try activities from both sides of the party and you can wear red AND black if you want! This program is for 4 - 12 graders only. Sign-ups are requested and begin January 11.
