Adult Program

Presented by Sharon Myers, President of the William Wetmore Chapter of the Daughters of 1812.  The typical soldier did not die of bullets during the War of 1812, but rather from germs.  Infectious disease was the #1 killer.  Learn how surgeon’s mate, Usher Parsons, single-handedly dealt with all the injuries of the men from the Battle of Lake Erie.  His case mortality was a little more than 3% - the mortality rate during the Korean War was 2.5%.  This PowerPoint presentation also includes information on physicians from Summit County during the War of 1812.

Every Wednesday at 10:30am

A lap-sit story time for children from birth to 2 years old with an adult caregiver.

Parlez-Vous Francais, Baby?  Join Us For Baby Tales With an International Twist!  Every Wednesday at Main Library, babies (ranging in age from birth to two) and their caregivers fill our program room for Baby Tales. The air bursts with the sweet sounds of laughter, singing, and curious exploration! We have been fortunate to have patrons from all over the world attend this program and share their native languages with us. So far we have sung the song “Are You Sleeping, Brother John” in eight different languages!  After initially singing in English and French we branched out to Spanish, Polish, Russian, Afrikaans, Croatian, and Italian to the delight of both babies and adults! Recently, we have started learning some traditional French nursery rhymes as well.

“Infants are born ‘citizens of the world’ with regard to language. Newborns can distinguish sounds from a language, even if they have never heard the language before. Brain research tells us that hearing the tones and sounds of different languages helps the brain to grow.” (Jackie Silberg, 125 Brain Games For Babies).

Come sing with us at Baby Tales and take your baby on a trip around the world!

Why, Who, What, When, Where & How: Digitizing Your Local Newspaper

A community's history is often documented most completely and energetically by its local newspapers, and libraries and other cultural institutions, long recognizing their unique historical value, have sought to preserve and provide access to them. Now, with the advent of digital technology, organizations are exploring how to provide online, instantaneous access to these rich resources. Jenni Salamon, Coordinator for the Ohio Digital Newspaper Program at the Ohio History Connection, will duscuss how to navigate the complexities of a newspaper digitization project and how your organization can have its local newspaper digitized.

This program will take place in Meeting Room 2AB, High Street Level, Main Library.

BELLE is inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, the illegitimate mixed race daughter of Admiral Sir John Lindsay. Raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield and his wife, Belle's lineage affords her certain privileges, yet her status prevents her from the traditions of noble social standing. While her cousin Elizabeth chases suitors for marriage, Belle is left on the sidelines wondering if she will ever find love. After meeting an idealistic young vicar's son bent on changing society, he and Belle help shape Lord Mansfield's role as Lord Chief Justice to end slavery in England.
