Let’s Talk About it—The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot
Saturday, January 28, 2 pm
Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells—taken without her knowledge in 1951—became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, and more. Henrietta's cells have been bought and sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown, and her family can't afford health insurance. This phenomenal New York Times bestseller tells a riveting story of the collision between ethics, race, and medicine; of scientific discovery and faith healing; and of a daughter consumed with questions about the mother she never knew.

Project Ujima
Wednesday, February 8, 6:30 pm
Project Ujima is a model of community engagement that provides a process and place for residents
and other stakeholders of Akron’s Buchtel Community to come together to identify, study and take action on issues of shared concern.
It was established in 2011 with a three-year grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
This project fosters the conditions that lead to residents discovering their own efficacy and capacity to
work together to strengthen their community. Building relationships of trust among and between residents,
service providers, and institutions is at the heart of the project.

HOTEL ON THE CORNER OF BITTER AND SWEET by Jamie Ford

Title: Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Author: Jamie Ford

Do you like to talk about the books you enjoy reading with others?  Then join us the second Monday of each month at 2pm for reader-to-reader book discussions, informal fun, and sharing with fellow fiction lovers.

In this month's selection, Henry Lee comes upon a crowd gathered outside the Panama Hotel, once the gateway to Seattle’s Japantown. It has been boarded up for decades, but now the new owner has made an incredible discovery: the belongings of Japanese families, left when they were rounded up and sent to internment camps during World War II. As Henry looks on, the owner opens a Japanese parasol.

This simple act takes old Henry Lee back to the 1940s, at the height of the war, when young Henry’s world is a jumble of confusion and excitement, and to his father, who is obsessed with the war in China and having Henry grow up American. While “scholarshipping” at the exclusive Rainier Elementary, where the white kids ignore him, Henry meets Keiko Okabe, a young Japanese American student. Amid the chaos of blackouts, curfews, and FBI raids, Henry and Keiko forge a bond of friendship–and innocent love–that transcends the long-standing prejudices of their Old World ancestors. And after Keiko and her family are swept up in the evacuations to the internment camps, she and Henry are left only with the hope that the war will end, and that their promise to each other will be kept.

No sign-up is required.  Refreshments are served.  Come and meet other adults who like to read and dicuss lighter fiction.

Do you love browsing through cookbooks and trying new recipes or cooking techniques?
Join fellow foodies for our Cookbook Club. You don’t have to be a gourmet chef to participate.
Each month we will get together to talk about a certain book, theme, or a celebrity chef.
There will be food samples or activities at every meeting.
A selection of cookbooks will be available for members to borrow.
Browse our collection, try out some of the recipes, and join the group to discuss your successes and mishaps.
