misc_none 6:00 PM  -  7:30 PM Bog Bodies Uncovered: Solving Europe's Ancient Mystery Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Business & Government Division   330-643-9020   bgdiv@akronlibrary.org

Over the past two centuries, peat cutters in the bogs of northern Europe have periodically unearthed the remains of prehistoric men, women, and children so well preserved that they are often mistaken for victims of modern crime. In many cases, their skin, hair, nails and marks of injury survive, betraying the violence that surrounded their deaths. The number of known bog bodies has increased, with the famous “Pete Marsh” discovered in Cheshire in the 1980s joined by new finds from Ireland and elsewhere. Who were these victims, and why were they murdered? Archaeologists are today investigating these cold cases.  If you enjoy learning more about true crime, forensics, and archaeology, don’t miss this presentation by University of Akron students Joshua Murphy and Stephanie Stanley.

All Ages

You are your child’s first teacher. Spark early neuron connections and feed your child’s hunger for natural sensory experiences related to color, texture, light and sound. Discover songs, books, prop stories and movement activities to do with your young learner to give him his first tools needed to learn to read and better understand her world. Best of all, these experiences will bring fun and joy into your child’s day! Dress for messy play experiences and consider bringing your child a change of clothes. Miss JoAnna is excited to share this special time with you and your child.

The Landis family of Akron and Granville County, North Carolina collaborated with filmmaker Tom Davenport to create this award-winning documentary which traces the history of the family over the lifetime of matriarch Bertha Landis. The film documents and personalizes major events in African American history — the Jim Crow era, migration from the South during and after World War II, segregation, and Civil Rights. It highlights the role of gospel singing in giving the Landis family a sense of unity and joy through difficult times. Join us and meet filmmaker Tom Davenport. Members of the musically talented Akron branch (Echoes of Heaven) will perform.

While Mr. Twain has eagerly agreed to appear at the Fairlawn-Bath Branch Library, he has refused to give a specific description of his presentation. There's every good chance he will talk about doctors and politicians, cigars and compliments, health and happiness. The meeting room doors open at 5:30 pm. The trouble begins at 6. Note: An acclaimed Mark Twain scholar and impersonator, Mark Dawidziak, will be signing copies of his two new books: Mark Twain's Guide to Diet, Exercise, Beauty, Fashion, Investment, Romance, Health and Happiness and Mark Twain In Ohio, after the performance.

During times of depression, war, poverty, or just when women needed to express themselves and their homes, the needle art of Redwork became a means for which one could find supplies easily. Redwork was used on pillowcases, backsplashes, table clothes, quilts, and other pretty items. It only took three items: needle, red thread, and muslin. Come learn this inexpensive and beautiful way to add that touch of antique and now modern needlework to your home. We will learn the history, and receive a kit with instructions and time to practice this one stitch to add beauty to a spot in your home.
