Barb Baltrinic, a teacher at Ellet High School for 25 years, will be launching her latest historical fiction novel at the Ellet Branch Library. In this novel Abraham Clark's son, Andrew, ventures into war armed with his sense of patriotism and strong values. Reality strikes when he is captured and incarcerated on the British prison ship, the H.M.S. Jersey, commonly known as "Hell." The abysmal conditions leave Andrew in a world of hate, despair and depression. Andrew's journey to healing can only happen when he realizes that he, too, holds responsibility for heartaches caused in the Revolutionary War. The novel is a psychological journal of a young soldier from his world of innocence to his physical, mental and emotional healing after the war.

October is American Archives Month, and we’re kicking it off with a day of learning about archival collections and services in our community and how you can care for historic materials in your own home. In the final of three sessions, Rhonda Rinehart, Manager of Special Collections at the University of Akron’s Cummings Center for the History of Psychology (CCHP), will discuss the dos and don’ts of handling and storing materials you come across in your genealogy or local history research and where to turn for help.

This program will take place in Meeting Room 2AB, High Street Level, Main Library. Meeting Room 3 will be open throughout the day as an exposition room. Be sure to stop in to learn more about archival facilities in Summit County.

She is co-author with Jayne Schooler of Journeys after Adoption: Understanding the Lifelong Process, has served as a board member of the national American Adoption Congress from 1997-1999, and currently serves on the board of the Donaldson Adoption Institute in New York City.

Betsie has worked tirelessly on legislation to reform Ohio's adoption laws. As a result, in March of 2015, Ohio became the 12th state to open previously closed birth records to adult adoptees, allowing 400,000 adoptees adopted in Ohio’s formerly “closed” period of 1964-1996 to have access to their original birth certificates. A short film, An Adoptee ROARed in Ohio: The Betsie Norris Story by documentary filmmaker Jean Strauss, will be shown and discussed along with the social and historical context of the old and new laws on this topic. Learn about Ohio’s journey and how implementation of the new law is going and share your questions and thoughts about the issues involved in this area of genealogy research.

Solving for Unknown Parentage – DNA Basics

Amanda Reno is an independent Genetic Genealogist focused on offering support and education to people within the genealogy, adoptee and unknown parentage community. Amanda was reunited with her older sister after being separated by adoption for nearly 30 years. The amazing journey that brought them together and their instant connection once reunited inspired her to help others. When she learned DNA was being used to provide answers in some of the most seemingly hopeless cases, she knew she wanted to learn how. Employing her love of data and research, insatiable curiosity, and desire to connect with others, DNA has now become her passion. Her talk will focus on the basic core knowledge required to identify an unknown parent(s) using genealogical DNA testing and traditional research techniques.

This program will take place in Meeting Room 2, High Street Level, Main Library.

BLUNT IMPACT by Lisa Black

Title: Blunt Impact (Theresa MacLean Series #5), Author: Lisa Black

Do you like to talk about the books you enjoy reading with others? The join us the second Monday of each month at 2pm for reader-to-reader discussions, informal fun, and sharing with fellow fiction lovers.

In this month's selection, Forensic detective Theresa MacLean takes the risk of getting too close to a murder victim's daughter. A construction site is a dangerous place for anyone, much less a woman who's had a little much to drink. So at first blush, it looks as if Samantha Zebrowski just fell from the 23rd floor of what's slated to become Cuyahoga County's new jail. But Samantha has been finishing concrete since she was 14. How could such an experienced worker ignore OSHA regulations and stray past the 10-foot safety zone? Theresa's leading theory is suicide, not an unlikely scenario for a single mom living with a wheelchair-bound mother and an 11-year-old. But Samantha's daughter Anna, known as Ghost, claims to have followed her mother on her barhopping tour that night and saw someone push her over the edge. True to her name, Ghost slips out of her Nana's house the next day and shows up at the medical examiner's office wanting to help Theresa find the "Shadow Man" who was with Samantha the night of her death. Theresa dries Ghost's tears and promises her that she and her cousin, homicide detective Frank Patrick, will find Samantha's killer. The next day, while lunching with prosecutor Ian Bauer, she sees the little girl showing her mother's picture to the bartender at Tavern on the Green. Fearful that the Shadow Man will try to eliminate Ghost before she can identify him, Theresa redoubles her efforts to bring Samantha's killer to swift justice. Black handles multiple plots like a pro, building a story with almost as many layers as the new Cleveland jail.

No sign up required.  Refreshments will be served.  come and meet with other adults who like to read and discuss lighter fiction.  New members are always welcome!
