THE PACT by Jodi Picoult

The Pact: A Love Story

Do you like to talk about the books you enjoy reading with others?  Then join us the second Monday of each month at 2 pm for reader-to-reader book discussions, informal fun, and sharing with fellow fiction lovers.

In this month's selection, for eighteen years the Hartes and the Golds have lived next door to each other, sharing everything from Chinese food to chicken pox to carpool duty. They've grown so close it seems they have always been a part of each other's lives. Parents and children alike have been best friends - so it's no surprise that in high school Chris and Emily's friendship blossoms into something more. They've been soul mates since they were born.

So when midnight calls from the hospital come in, no one is ready for the appalling truth: Emily is dead at seventeen from a gunshot wound to the head. There's a single unspent bullet in the gun that Chris took from his father's cabinet - a bullet that Chris tells police he intended for himself. But a local detective has doubts about the suicide pact that Chris has described. As its chapters unfold, alternating between an idyllic past and an unthinkable present, "The Pact" paints an indelible portrait of families in anguish... culminating in an astonishingly suspenseful courtroom drama as Chris finds himself on trial for murder.

No registration required.  Refreshments will be served.  Come meet with other adults who like to read and discuss lighter fiction.

Afternoon Book Discussion

Join us for our monthly book discussion. For the month of May, we will discuss THE ZOOKEEPER'S WIFE:  A WAR STORY by Diane Ackerman.

A true story-- as powerful as "Schindler's List"-- in which the keepers of the Warsaw Zoo saved hundreds of people from Nazi hands. When Germany invaded Poland, Stuka bombers devastated Warsaw-- and the city's zoo along with it. With most of their animals dead, zookeepers Jan and Antonina Zabinski began smuggling Jews into empty cages. Another dozen "guests" hid inside the Zabinskis' villa, emerging after dark for dinner, socializing, and, during rare moments of calm, piano concerts. Jan, active in the Polish resistance, kept ammunition buried in the elephant enclosure and stashed explosives in the animal hospital. Meanwhile, Antonina kept her unusual household afloat, caring for both its human and its animal inhabitants-- otters, a badger, hyena pups, lynxes. With her exuberant prose and exquisite sensitivity to the natural world, Diane Ackerman engages us viscerally in the lives of the zoo animals, their keepers, and their hidden visitors. She shows us how Antonina refused to give in to the penetrating fear of discovery, keeping alive an atmosphere of play and innocence even as Europe crumbled around her.

Copies will be available at Green Branch Library after April 8.

Food for Thought Discussion

Join Hank Hudson for a discussion about Killing Jesus: A History by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard.

Millions of readers have thrilled to bestselling authors Bill O'Reilly and historian Martin Dugards "Killing Kennedy" and "Killing Lincoln," page-turning works of nonfiction that have changed the way we read history. Now the anchor of "The O'Reilly Factor" details the events leading up to the murder of the most influential man in history: Jesus of Nazareth. Nearly two thousand years after this beloved and controversial young revolutionary was brutally killed by Roman soldiers, more than 2.2 billion human beings attempt to follow his teachings and believe he is God. "Killing Jesus" will take readers inside Jesus' life, recounting the seismic political and historical events that made his death inevitable - and changed the world forever.

Evening Book Discussion

Join us for our monthly evening book discussion. For the month of May, we will discuss THE LANGUAGE OF THREADS by Gail Tsukiyama.

Readers of Women of the Silk never forgot the moving, powerful story of Pei, brought to work in the silk house as a girl, grown into a quiet but determined young woman whose life is subject to cruel twists of fate, including the loss of her closest friend, Lin. Now we finally learn what happened to Pei, as she leaves the silk house for Hong Kong in the 1930s, arriving with a young orphan, Ji Shen, in her care. Her first job, in the home of a wealthy family, ends in disgrace, but soon Pei and Ji Shen find a new life in the home of Mrs. Finch, a British ex-patriate who welcomes them as the daughters she never had. Their idyllic life is interrupted, however, by war, and the Japanese occupation. Pei is once again forced to make her own way, struggling to survive and to keep her extended family alive as well. In this story of hardship and survival, Tsukiyama paints a portrait of women fighting the forces of war and time to make a life for themselves.

RADIANCE OF TOMORROW by Ishmael Beah (Author of Long Way Gone)

Ishmael Beah's 2007 memoir, A LONG WAY GONE, gave us a first-hand sense of what it meant to be a child soldier in war-torn Sierra Leone. In his first novel, he captures with arresting details the struggles of a pair of friends who attempt to return to their hometown, reduced to a bone-yard by the merciless civil war. Benjamin and Bockarie's plans to resume their jobs as teachers receive some helpful support, but the villagers find themselves weakened by continuing spasms of murder, rape, and robbery. Radiance of Tomorrow reminds us again that wars are not over when the papers announce them to be. A major young African novelist unafraid of exploring pressure points.
