Every Wednesday at 10:30am

A lap-sit story time for children from birth to 2 years old with an adult caregiver.

Parlez-Vous Francais, Baby?  Join Us For Baby Tales With an International Twist!  Every Wednesday at Main Library, babies (ranging in age from birth to two) and their caregivers fill our program room for Baby Tales. The air bursts with the sweet sounds of laughter, singing, and curious exploration! We have been fortunate to have patrons from all over the world attend this program and share their native languages with us. So far we have sung the song “Are You Sleeping, Brother John” in eight different languages!  After initially singing in English and French we branched out to Spanish, Polish, Russian, Afrikaans, Croatian, and Italian to the delight of both babies and adults! Recently, we have started learning some traditional French nursery rhymes as well.

“Infants are born ‘citizens of the world’ with regard to language. Newborns can distinguish sounds from a language, even if they have never heard the language before. Brain research tells us that hearing the tones and sounds of different languages helps the brain to grow.” (Jackie Silberg, 125 Brain Games For Babies).

Come sing with us at Baby Tales and take your baby on a trip around the world!

The Peripheral by William Gibson

William Gibson returns with his first novel since 2010's New York Times-bestselling Zero History. Where Flynne and her brother, Burton, live, jobs outside the drug business are rare. Fortunately, Burton has his veteran's benefits, for neural damage he suffered from implants during his time in the USMC's elite Haptic Recon force. Then one night Burton has to go out, but there's a job he's supposed to do--a job Flynne didn't know he had. Beta-testing part of a new game, he tells her. The job seems to be simple: work a perimeter around the image of a tower building. Little bug-like things turn up. He's supposed to get in their way, edge them back. That's all there is to it. He's offering Flynne a good price to take over for him. What she sees, though, isn't what Burton told her to expect. It might be a game, but it might also be murder.

MR. PERFECT by Linda Howard

Mr. Perfect

Do you like to talk about the books you enjoy reading with others?  Join us the second Monday of each month at 2 pm for reader-to-reader book discussions, informal fun, and sharing with fellow fiction lovers.

In this month's selection, What would make the perfect man? That's the delicious topic that heats up the proceedings at a certain table of professional women at their favorite restaurant. What qualities would he have? Would he be tall, dark, and handsome? Caring and warmhearted—or would just muscular do? Jaine Bright and her three girlfriends start off with the basics: he'd be faithful and reliable, the responsible type, and have a great sense of humor.

But as the conversation picks up momentum, so do the quartet's requirements for Mr. Perfect as and they write down a tongue-in-cheek checklist that's both funny and racy. The next thing they know, the List, as it has come to be called, becomes an overnight sensation, spreading through their company like wildfire and grabbing the interest of local newspapers and television coverage. No one expected this avalanche of attention for something that began as a joke among friends. But the joke turns deadly serious when one of the four women is murdered...

The prime suspect in the case is the victim's boyfriend, who was one of a number of men who found the List sexist and offensive. An impenetrable alibi gets him off the hook, but a deadly stalker targets the three remaining friends. Now, with the help of Jaine's neighbor, an unpredictable police detective, the puzzle must be solved as the dream of Mr. Perfect becomes a chilling nightmare.

No registration is required.  Refreshments will be served.  Come meet with other adults who like to read and discuss lighter fiction.

Who's Who in Historic Glendale Cemetery?

Ever wonder who all those beautiful monuments and mausoleums in Glendale are memorializing?  Many of Summit County's pioneers are buried in this beautiful, historic cemetery along with other "characters", such as Chief Big Buffalo and the Great Raymond, and the inventor of Quaker Rolled Oats. Many monuments have life-size statues of the deceased.  This presentation is by Sharon Myers, President of the William Wetmore Chapter Daughters of 1812.

Please call 330.376.2927 or visit us at the Highland Square Branch Library to register.

Dolly Webb is returning to teach her new sewing series. Not so long ago in the “Sewing Times World,” ladies made little sewing keepsakes for themselves or to give as remembrances. Money was tight, so these inexpensively made treasures that held pins, scissors, thread and other sewing items were kept in a sewing basket. Come and make these treasures for yourself or for a gift.

German Genealogy with Nancy Ottman

A longtime member of the Ohio Chapter of Palatines to America (PalAm), Nancy has been researching for over twenty years and has presented at various genealogy organizations and societies across Ohio. On Saturday, May 2, she will present two lectures at Main Library:

Beginning German Genealogy
How to collect information on your family including what to ask, where to look for confirmation, and how to record the information. Naming practices and the difference between primary and secondary sources will also be reviewed. The focus will be on German genealogy, but the basic concepts apply to all ethnic families.

The 19th Century German Traveler
Follow along with a traveler’s journey including how he decides to leave Germany, what he takes with him, and what happens on his voyage to America.

Class will take place on the High Street Level of Main Library.

To register, please contact the Special Collections Division.
