Medicine and Surgery During the War of 1812

The typical soldier did not die of bullets during the War of 1812, but rather from germs. Infectious disease was the #1 killer. Learn how surgeon’s mate Usher Parsons single-handedly dealt with all the injuries of the men from the Battle of Lake Erie. His case mortality was a little more than 3 percent - the mortality rate during the Korean War was 2.5 percent. This PowerPoint presentation also includes information on physicians from Summit County during the War of 1812. This program is presented by Sharon Myers of the William Wetmore Chapter Daughters of 1812.

Join us for A Garden Affair!

The weather outside is frightful.
Escape from the cold as we offer a trio of programs to get you looking forward to spring and planning for the new garden season.

1 pm: Sustainable Gardening
Rachel Tayse, of the “Harmonious Homestead” blog - harmonioushomestead.com – describes herself as “a home-cooking, backyard-gardening, unschooling, earthy homemaker in Columbus Ohio.”  Join Rachel for a discussion of sustainable gardening and its benefits.

2 pm: Permaculture while Renting
Almost a decade ago, Don Abbot became an accidental gardener. Since that surprising beginning he’s become an avid gardener, blogger, author, educator, speaker, reluctant activist, and permaculture practitioner.  His blog – thesnarkygardener.com – assists others with growing food in Northeastern Ohio and beyond.  Join Don for an introduction to permaculture for the renter or new adherent.

3 pm: Reading a Seed Packet and Starting Seeds Indoors
The staff from “Let’s Grow Akron” will offer tips on reading seed packets to glean all the information you need to select good varieties for your garden.  They’ll also offer suggestions for starting seeds indoors to help you get your plants started early

Finally, don’t forget to stop by our Seed Sharing Library to pick up some heirloom variety seeds to get you started.

Please contact Science & Technology, at (330) 643- 9075, to reserve your spot in any of these programs.

The body of literature written by African Americans, beginning in the pre-Revolutionary War period, to contemporary times has engaged in a creative, if not often contentious dialogue with American letters. The result is a literature rich in expressive subtlety and social insight, offering illuminating assessments of not only African American, but what we can call American identities and history.

Presented by Dr. Padmore Agbemabiese an Associate Professor of English and African American and African Studies at the Cuyahoga Community College since 2011.

The second class in the series features HeritageQuest, which provides home access to Ancestry's U.S. census collection as well as access to Revolutionary War pension files, Freedman’s Bank records, digitized books and more.

Class will take place in Computer Lab 2, First Floor, Main Library.
