Couldn’t make it to Comic-Con®, but still want to celebrate your geeky obsessions?
Here’s your chance! Whether you’re a fan of Star Wars, Batman, Doctor Who, Harry Potter, or Naruto, you’re sure to have a great time geeking out with your fellow fans at

Take your favorite fandom and set it to music, and what do you get? A fanvid! We’ll be showing fanvids on the big screen all afternoon in the Children’s Library.
To submit a vid for the exhibition, just use editing software on your computer to create a short music video, and send a copy of it to ysodiv@akronlibrary.org by July 18. Anime, television, or movies – whatever your fandom, we want to see it!

12-3 pm Artist’s Alley (in the Teen Department)

A dynamic page layout can make art really pop off the page. Join cartoonist Ted Mallison for an investigation into the unsung craft of comics page layout. You'll learn about tips and tricks, tools of the trade, and some of the legends of page design from the Golden Age of comics though today! Ted Mallison is a local freelance illustrator. Food for Thought Discussion
Wednesdays, 1 pm

Marvin Phillips discusses ODDBALL OHIO by Jerome Pohlen.

This off-the-wall travel guide presents an Ohio odder than imagined. It wastes no time describing Cedar Point or suggesting scenic bike rides through the Hocking Hills; instead, this entertaining travel companion directs out-of-state adventurers and Buckeye state residents to the home of the world's largest cockroach, an Amish SUV, Egg Shell Land, a two-headed calf, and the Accounting Hall of Fame. Ohio is depicted as the birthplace of bar codes, Airstream trailers, televangelism, Paul Lynde, Alcoholics Anonymous, and the banana split. Odd stories abound, and tales of Ohio as the only state where Jerry Springer has been elected the mayor of a major city, where a brick outhouse is on the National Register of Historic Places, and where Buster the Dog voted for president accompany the site-seeing suggestions. Plenty of photos and maps ensure that this guide is as practical as it is wacky when seeking out wonders such as the Great Pumpkin Watertower, Goodyear's World of Rubber, and Bogart and Bacall's wedding site, then relaxing with a brew at the World's Longest Bar.

RED RISING by Pierce Brown

Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children. But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class. Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society’s ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies . . . even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

KINDRED SPIRITS by Sarah Strohmeyer

Kindred Spirits

Do you like to talk about the books you enjoy reading with others?  Then join us the second Monday of each month at 2 pm for reader-to-reader book discussions, informal fun, and sharing with fellow fiction lovers.

In this month's selection, when life gives you lemons, call your best girlfriends and whip up some lemon martinis. Such is the mantra for the Ladies' Society for the Conservation of Martinis, which was established after one fateful PTA meeting, when four young mothers-Lynne, Mary Kay, Beth, and Carol- discovered they had more in common than they ever thought possible. Meeting once a month, the women would share laughs and secrets and toast to their blossoming friendship with a clink of their sacred martini glasses. The Society was their salvation, their refuge, but when life-shattering circumstances force the group to dissolve, their friendship is never quite the same...until two years later, when a tragic event puts the Society back in session.

When Lynne passes away suddenly, she leaves behind one simple request: that her old friends sort through her belongings. Reluctantly, the women reunite to rummage through her closets. There's nothing remarkable. But buried deep within Lynne's lingerie drawer is an envelope addressed to the Society. And inside they find a letter that reveals a shocking secret and a final wish that will send the women on a life-changing journey...proving that nothing is more powerful than the will of a true girlfriend and a good, strong martini.

No registration required.  Refreshments will be served.  Come meet with other adults who like to read and discuss lighter fiction.
