Introduction to Pinterest

Pinterest is a free website that requires registration to use. Users can upload, save, sort, and manage images—known as pins—and other media content (e.g., videos and images) through collections known as pinboards. Users can browse the content of others on the main page. Users can then save individual pins to one of their own boards using the "Pin It" button, with Pinboards typically organized by a central topic or theme. Users can personalize their experience with Pinterest by pinning items, creating boards, and interacting with other members. Attendance at Internet, Part 1 or prior Internet experience is preferred.

Integrating Authentic Cultural Resources into Curriculum

Presenter: Kathleen Shelton, Ohio Department of Education.

An essential component of a proficiency-based world language classroom is using authentic cultural resources in the target language. In this workshop teachers will use free online tech tools to make authentic videos more comprehensible to novice and intermediate language learners, helping them acquire a deeper understanding of the target language and the content being presented. Authentic resources will also be used in the creation of reading, listening and communication tasks that connect higher level thinking skills with depth of understanding. Collaboration time, sample lessons, tools and resources will be provided.

  • 5 contact hours will be provided.
  • Please bring laptop and authentic video and/or text resources.
  • One hour lunch on your own.

Main Library is located at 60 South High Street in downtown Akron. For directions, click here.

His grandfather's suicide spurred Texas-based researcher Dennis Blocker to see if World War II played a part in his pain. The 14-year journey led Blocker to numerous libraries, including the Akron-Summit County Public Library’s archives which revealed information about three local shipmates. Astounded by what he discovered, Blocker contacted Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Mitch Weiss who was inspired by the detailed research now contained in a compelling new book, The Heart of Hell: The Untold Story of Courage and Sacrifice in the Shadow of Iwo Jima. Join us for a presentation by Dennis Blocker. Adoptee Access to Records – Ohio’s New Law

As an adoptee having made the journey to a successful reunion on her own, Betsie Norris, founded Adoption Network Cleveland to provide support and assistance to others who are touched by adoption. She’s a frequent spokesperson in the media and at conferences and has assisted in thousands of adoptee-birthparent reunions. She is co-author with Jayne Schooler of Journeys after Adoption: Understanding the Lifelong Process, has served as a board member of the national American Adoption Congress from 1997-1999, and currently serves on the board of the Donaldson Adoption Institute in New York City.

Betsie has worked tirelessly on legislation to reform Ohio's adoption laws. As a result, in March of 2015, Ohio became the 12th state to open previously closed birth records to adult adoptees, allowing 400,000 adoptees adopted in Ohio’s formerly “closed” period of 1964-1996 to have access to their original birth certificates. A short film, An Adoptee ROARed in Ohio: The Betsie Norris Story by documentary filmmaker Jean Strauss, will be shown and discussed along with the social and historical context of the old and new laws on this topic. Learn about Ohio’s journey and how implementation of the new law is going and share your questions and thoughts about the issues involved in this area of genealogy research.

This program will take place in Meeting Room 2, High Street Level, Main Library.

To register, please contact the Special Collections Division.

Solving for Unknown Parentage – DNA Basics

Amanda Reno is a Genetic Genealogist and team member for The DNA Detectives, the company founded by CeCe Moore, genetic genealogy consultant for the PBS television series Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and Genealogy Roadshow. Amanda was reunited with her older sister after being separated by adoption for nearly 30 years. The amazing journey that brought them together and their instant connection once reunited inspired her to help others. When she learned DNA was being used to provide answers in some of the most seemingly hopeless cases, she knew she wanted to learn how. Employing her love of data and research, insatiable curiosity, and desire to connect with others, DNA has now become her passion. Her talk will focus on the basic core knowledge required to identify an unknown parent(s) using genealogical DNA testing and traditional research techniques.

This program will take place in Meeting Room 2, High Street Level, Main Library.
