What do Harper Lee’s novels say about Jim Crow South? Does Watchman, with its revealing depiction of Atticus, destroy the mantel that Mockingbird once occupied?

This enlightening afternoon will be led by:

Waking Up the Garden in Spring

Wednesday, March 2, 2016, 2:00 pm (snow date 3/16, same time)

Presented by  Cathy Beauregard

Gardens, Gardens, Gardens!  Winter has come and gone, and now it’s time to wake up the garden after the strange and unseasonal winter we’ve just had!  Learn about consolidating tasks, what to look at and what to do first in YOUR  garden!  This is an interactive and in-depth lecture on where to start and how to put your outdoor space together quickly and efficiently; leaving you more time to spend in the garden for the fun things like entertaining, picking flowers, lying in the hammock, and just plain enjoying the lovely landscape you’ve created.

An afternoon with the Gillettes! Part of National Library week.

Not only do Harold and Theodora Niver talk about William & Helen   Gillette, they become the Gillettes, flitting back and forth between   being presenters and portrayers.

Who was William Gillette? What was his connection to the greatest  fictional detective of all time? Was Sherlock Holmes fact...or fiction? What is the story behind the image of Holmes...the cap...the pipe...the lens?

Learn about Gillette Castle in East Haddam. What famous people visited the Castle? Learn about Gillette's greatest love - his wife Helen. And, if you’re a cat lover, you will enjoy hearing about Will's love of cats.

Hear several songs from the English Music Hall era, since both Harold and Theodora are professional musicians!

The Way Home
South Korea, 2002
Directed by Jeong-hyang Lee

87 min, rated PG
Seven-year-old Sang-woo is left with his grandmother in a remote village while his mother looks for work. Born and raised in the city, Sang-woo quickly comes into conflict with his old-fashioned grandmother and his new rural surroundings. He trades his grandmother's only treasure for a video game; he throws his food and he throws tantrums. When Sang-woo's mother finds work and finally returns for him, Sang-woo has become a different boy. Through his grandmother's boundless patience and devotion, he learns to embrace empathy, humility and the importance of family.
