misc_none 7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Author event with Lucie Whitehouse Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Lucie Whitehouse is visiting!

From the bestselling author of Before We Met, comes a new twisting psychological thriller about old friends and the dangerous secrets that rest at the heart of a family. LucieWhitehouse returns with KEEP YOU CLOSE (May 2016), bringing to readers a nail-biting read that will keep you glued to the end.

KEEP YOU CLOSE focuses on Rowan, who learns that her estranged friend and renowned artist, Marianne Glass, has died in what appears to be a tragic accident. Knowing Marianne suffered from vertigo, Rowan suspects there is more to the story than police believe. Marianne—and the whole Glass family—once meant everything to Rowan. For a teenage girl, motherless with a much-absent father, this lively, intellectual household represented a world of glamour and opportunity. Rowan won’t rest until she discovers the truth about Marianne’s fall and to do so, once more immerses herself in Marianne’s life. But, the deeper Rowan goes, the more sinister everything seems and a secret in the past makes Rowan worry about her own fate.

Lucie Whitehouse grew up in Warwickshire, England, studied classics at the University of Oxford, and now lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her husband and daughter. She is author of The House at Midnight, The Bed I Made, and Before We Met.

“The war. Again”: Trauma and Futurity in Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale

Join us as Aimee Pozorski from CCSU leads us through a discussion of The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. Attend even if you haven't read!

Kristin Hannah’s 2015 novel, The Nightingale opens with a dedication looking to the past and to the future: “And to Kaylee Nova Hannah, the newest star in our world: Welcome baby girl.” Such a touching dedication seems to inspire or to underwrite the novel’s own investment in intergenerational conflict and hope for the future that a new generation brings. In this way, The Nightingale works on two levels:  By considering the effects of WWII, the novel—like many twenty first century novels— takes up what I refer to as “the problem of history” and the irreparable, repeated traumas of the twentieth century; by considering the personal relationships between parents and their children, however, the novel also looks to the future, to the hope invested in the next generation. The novel ends, after all, with the realization that: “Every man saved came home to create a family”—and it is in these families produced in the wreckage of war the The Nightingale ultimately finds hope.
