Learn how to setup and use your new Mac
The goal of this workshop is to get you comfortable with your new Mac & it’s built-in applications.

We’ll start with the very basics including setting up email, setting up an Apple ID, installing free antivirus software and exploring some of the applications that are included with your Mac.

You’ll work with a Mac consultant to learn:
 App Store, Calendar, Disk Utility, Facetime, iTunes, Notes, Photos, Preview, Safari, & Time Machine.

Learn how to manage the data on your iPhone
How often do you back up the data on your phone? If you lost your phone tomorrow, would you still be able to be productive?

Work with a Mac consultant to learn how to use Apple’s built-in tools for data management across devices.

Learn how to:

 • Sync your iPhone to your laptop & back it up
 • Use iCloud to sync your calendars & data across your devices
 • Devise a backup strategy for your device
 • Understand the basics of your new device

Learn how to use Time Machine or Time Capsule to easily backup your Mac
How often do you back up the data on your Mac? If you lost your Mac or hard drive  tomorrow, would you still be able to be productive?

Work with a Mac consultant to learn how to use Apple’s built-in tools for data backup and recovery. Learn how to:

 • Devise a backup strategy for your Mac
 • Determine what kind of strategy is best for you (online v. USB v. Time Capsule)
 • Restore a new drive from a backup

OF ARMS AND ARTISTS: The American Revolution Through Painters' Eyes, by Paul Staiti

Paul Staiti brings five great American artists of the Revolutionary period—Charles Willson Peale, John Singleton Copley, John Trumbull, Benjamin West, and Gilbert Stuart—to life. He shows that their lives were every bit as eventful as those of the Founders with whom they continually interacted. These men contributed mightily to America’s founding spirit and, as Staiti describes it provided a, “means of narrating the Revolution to themselves and to citizens of the new republic”  at a time of breathtaking historical change.

This event will be held at the New Britain Museum of American Art, 65 Lexington St., New Britain, CT 06052

The goal of this workshop is to get you comfortable with your new Mac & it’s built-in applications.

We’ll start with the very basics including setting up email, setting up an Apple ID, installing free antivirus software and exploring some of the applications that are included with your Mac.

You’ll work with a Mac consultant to learn:
 App Store, Calendar, Disk Utility, Facetime, iTunes, Notes, Photos, Preview, Safari, & Time Machine.

Learn how to manage the data on your iPhone
How often do you back up the data on your phone? If you lost your phone tomorrow, would you still be able to be productive?

Work with a Mac consultant to learn how to use Apple’s built-in tools for data management across devices.

Learn how to:

 • Sync your iPhone to your laptop & back it up
 • Use iCloud to sync your calendars & data across your devices
 • Devise a backup strategy for your device
 • Understand the basics of your new device

Learn how to use Time Machine or Time Capsule to easily backup your Mac
How often do you back up the data on your Mac? If you lost your Mac or hard drive  tomorrow, would you still be able to be productive?

Work with a Mac consultant to learn how to use Apple’s built-in tools for data backup and recovery. Learn how to:

 • Devise a backup strategy for your Mac
 • Determine what kind of strategy is best for you (online v. USB v. Time Capsule)
 • Restore a new drive from a backup

Join us as special guest lecturer Tom Crouch, curator of the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum, discusses the Wright family and its impact on the personalities of Wilbur and Orville Wright, the general period of the invention of the airplane, and a discussion of the Wrights and the world from 1905--1915. This will include their emergence as public figures, the Wrights and Europe, the creation of the company, the patent suits and their impact on the larger world. Tom will concentrate on the Wrights as people and their interaction with the wider world.

We’ll start with the very basics including setting up email, setting up an Apple ID, installing free antivirus software and exploring some of the applications that are included with your Mac.

You’ll work with a Mac consultant to learn:
 App Store, Calendar, Disk Utility, Facetime, iTunes, Notes, Photos, Preview, Safari, & Time Machine.

Learn how to manage the data on your iPhone
How often do you back up the data on your phone? If you lost your phone tomorrow, would you still be able to be productive?

Work with a Mac consultant to learn how to use Apple’s built-in tools for data management across devices.

Learn how to:

 • Sync your iPhone to your laptop & back it up
 • Use iCloud to sync your calendars & data across your devices
 • Devise a backup strategy for your device
 • Understand the basics of your new device

Learn how to use Time Machine or Time Capsule to easily backup your Mac
How often do you back up the data on your Mac? If you lost your Mac or hard drive  tomorrow, would you still be able to be productive?

Work with a Mac consultant to learn how to use Apple’s built-in tools for data backup and recovery. Learn how to:

 • Devise a backup strategy for your Mac
 • Determine what kind of strategy is best for you (online v. USB v. Time Capsule)
 • Restore a new drive from a backup

David Herlihy, author of Bicycle: The History, and The Lost Cyclist, will give a lecture on the invention and early development of the bicycle. The invention and development of the basic bicycle in the 1860s culminated in the "safety" bicycle of the 1890s that would play such an important role in the Wright brothers' story. And there's also a timely Connecticut hook here: November 2016 will mark 150 years since the granting of the world's first bicycle patent, awarded to Pierre Lallement then living in New Haven.

Typically, when executives quit a lucrative but unfulfilling job mid-career, they open bakeries or move to Italy. But Neil Hayward took a less-expected path: he went birding. His lifelong hobby quickly evolved into a much more ambitious endeavor, as his growing list of species reluctantly catapulted him into a Big Year—a race to find the most birds in one year. Neil shocked the birding world by finding 749 species of birds and breaking the long-standing Big Year record. LOST AMONG THEBIRDS: Accidentally Finding Myself in One Very Big Year chronicles Neil’s record-breaking Big Year and how, along the way, he surprised even himself, finding a renewed sense of confidence and hope about the world and his role in it.

Dr. Richard Prum of Yale University, will explain how birds fly! Dr. Prum is the Curator of Ornithology and Head Curator of Vertebrate Zoology in the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, having previously served as Chair of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (2008-2011).

AFPL Teen Advisory Board

TAB is open to teens in Grades 9-12 and is a great way to get your volunteers hours!

What do we do? Snack and discuss future teen programs and test out games & program ideas.

Tom Hicks,
Winner of the 2016 Connecticut Young Artist Piano Competitions
A winner of the 2016 Connecticut Young Artist Piano Competitions and numerous other competitions worldwide, Hicks is a 22-year-old pianist from Guernsey, England.  Tom is now a master's candidate at Yale University School of Music where he studies with Boris Berman.   Doors open at 2:30 pm, light refreshments following the performance.
