office_dollarsign 11:15 AM  -  3:00 PM AARP Free Tax Preparation Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Free tax preparation by appointment only (at 11:15, 12:30, or 1:45).  Register at the Adult Reference Desk beginning Thursday, January 12.

Please observe these restrictions:

1. You must be a full-year New York State resident (no Yonkers or part-time New York City residents).

2. You must present a government-issued photo ID for you (and for your spouse if filing a joint return).

3. You -- and if filing jointly, your spouse -- must sign the return in the presence of the preparer.

4. You must present proof of your social security number with a social security card, Medicare card, social security statement (1099SSA), or a copy of a 2015 AARP-prepared tax return that was e-filed and accepted by the IRS.

5. You must bring your 2015 tax return.

6.  If "Married Filing Separately", you must present your spouse's social security number and know whether the spouse has already filed, and, if so, whether the spouse claimed the standard or itemized deduction.

7. If a 1099B (sale of stock or mutual fund) or substitute statement is presented and the date of purchase and basis of an item is not on the form or statement, you must provide this information (typically from contacting the broker).  The Library will not research this.  If you cannot determine the basis, we are required to report it as zero, making the proceeds fully taxable.

8. You must remove all tax documents from envelopes and present them neatly to the preparer.

9. The aides will prepare only e-file returns, not paper returns (except for the non-appearing spouse exception).

10.The AAPR tax aides reserve the right to refuse to prepare any return that is not in compliance with these rules, is beyond their overall training, is beyond the knowledge or experience of the preparer, is overly complex, has excessive income, or is not accompanied by enough information to prepare a complete and accurate return.
