Every Halloween, people walk by the creepy house on Bedford Avenue and they hurry their footsteps to pass it a bit more quickly.  You know the one I mean - the big house on the corner that appears to be packed with books. This year, you and your friends have made a pact - you're going to go inside the house and see what the big deal is. Rumor has it that there's a spell on the old building and that anyone brave enough to explore the house on Halloween will be richly rewarded. As soon as you enter the house, the doors immediately lock behind you. But there's more...you must collect 5 totems in a limited time in order to escape the house. If not, you will be trapped inside forever.

  • For all ages! Children under 10 must have an adult participate in the program with them.

Virtual Film Discussion: Mrs. Lowry & Son

Not Rated | 92 min | 2019

"Mrs. Lowry & Son" tells the story of how famed British artist L.S. Lowry lived all of his life with his overbearing mother, a deterring voice, as he pursued his artistic ambition. A rent collector by day, Lowry took art classes in the evening and painted into the early hours to become one of the most significant artists of the 20th Century. Starring Timothy Spall and Vanessa Redgrave.

Please watch the movie on Kanopy via your home library’s web page and then join us for a lively group discussion (you will need to reserve on of your 6 monthly movie credits on Kanopy for this program). This is not a high-brow film critique, rather a relaxed and informal conversation about the movie. A spinoff of Bellmore Memorial Library’s popular Reel Chat program, we hope our new Virtual Film Discussions will provide the same opportunity for fun and companionship.

  • Registration begins 9/24 - no barcode needed
  • Home library question is for statistical purposes only
  • You will receive an invitation to the Zoom meeting via email at around Noon

Selection: Euphoria by Lily King

Set between the First and Second World Wars, Euphoria is loosely based on events in the life of Margaret Mead and her second and third husbands. Three anthropologists in New Guinea come together in the jungle-a couple whose marriage isn’t doing well, and a lone investigator who has only recently tried to commit suicide following the loss of his brothers. The three become involved intimately—their attraction both physical and intellectual—even while competing in their professional pursuits. Set in New Guinea, "Euphoria" is a powerful story, at once gritty, sensuous, and captivating.

Selection: Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari

In Sapiens, Dr Yuval Noah Harari spans the whole of human history, from the very first humans to walk the earth to the radical – and sometimes devastating – breakthroughs of the Cognitive, Agricultural and Scientific Revolutions. Drawing on insights from biology, anthropology, paleontology and economics, he explores how the currents of history have shaped our human societies, the animals and plants around us, and even our personalities. Have we become happier as history has unfolded? Can we ever free our behaviour from the heritage of our ancestors? And what, if anything, can we do to influence the course of the centuries to come?
