Selection: On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan

Bestselling author Ian McEwan brilliantly illuminates the collision of sexual longing, deep-seated fears, and romantic fantasy on a young couple's wedding night. It is 1962, and Florence and Edward are celebrating their wedding in a hotel on Dorset coast. Yet as they dine, the expectation of their marital duties become overwhelming. Unbeknownst to them both, the decisions they make this night will resonate throughout their lives. With exquisite prose, Ian McEwan created On Chesil Beach a story of lives transformed by a gesture not made or a word not spoken.

Selection:  The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn

The title refers to both the protagonist, Dr. Anna Fox, and the horrific scene she witnesses from her kitchen window. Anna lives alone—a recluse in  her New York City home, agoraphobic, unable to venture outside. She spends her day drinking too much wine, watching old black-and-white movies, and recalling happier times when she and her husband and daughter all lived together. Anna also uses her camera to spy on her neighbors. After the “perfect family” moves in across the street, Anna is sure she has seen the mother be killed in the home; but no one, not even the police, believes her. What  is real and what is imagined? In this thriller, no  one—and nothing—is what it seems; and twists keep coming as Anna’s history is revealed and the mystery solved. Please join us to discuss this novel of psychological suspense “that recalls the best of Hitchcock.” (Book Browse for Libraries)

Selection: Haunted Ground by Erin Hart

Two brothers “cutting turf” from a peat bog in the Irish countryside discover the head of a beautiful red-haired woman, decapitated and perfectly preserved in the  decay-resistant bog. Who is she, and how long has her head been in the ground? And will the bodies of the  recently disappeared wife and son of the local landowner also be found in the depths of Drumcleggan bog?  Dubliner Cormac Maguire and Irish-American Nora  Gavin Maguire, a professor of archaeology, are called in  to solve both deaths when Nora herself is threatened.  With a strong sense of place for Galway in the rural west of Ireland and its folklore, legends, and music, this story weaves together Ireland's turbulent past and its emerging technological present in an entertaining plot. Haunted Ground has been described as “an utterly beguiling mix  of village mystery, gothic suspense, and psychological thriller.” (Booklist, May 1, 2003)  Join us for a lively discussion!
