rec_paintpalette02 10:00 AM Artist Deborah Martin: Photo Fauvism     Tell a Friend
Contact: Library Reference Desk   789-2661   refdesk@bel-tib-lib.org

Reception Tuesday, June 4, 6-8pm
Exhibit June 3-July 5 in the Founders Room

Deborah Martin has a BA Fine Arts with Honors from the Academy of Art College, San Francisco, CA. She started as an Illustration major then transferred to Motion Pictures. After graduating, she started to dabble in photography.
She describes her art and techniques: "I create fine art digital photography using enhanced imagery to create abstract and figurative images. I find and manipulate surfaces from a variety of sources such as man-made materials or elements from nature. These layered digital photographs become stories that I weave by using abstraction or historical and tribal figures. My intentions are to work intuitively to make evocatively visceral images that will bring my audience to find their own imagination and stories."

Excercise and Aging: A Scientific Update from the Frontlines
with Dr. Simon Melov, Buck Institute for Research on Aging

Aging is an increasingly important problem in the developed world, with the maturation of the baby boomers, and the increased health care burden this represents. Although growing old is still inevitable, recent research has demonstrated that lifespan can be extended in simple model organisms through genetic and pharmacological approaches. Translating these basic discoveries to human beings has proven problematic, the so called "translational gap". What can be done to combat the functional decline with age which is a universal experience? Exercise is a proven therapy for combating many of the functional deficits seen with age, and Dr. Melov will discuss some of the research in this area, as well as illustrate some of the conceptual and practical difficulties in studying the biology of aging.

Fairfax artist Cara Brown began her career by taking a watercolor painting class with her mom at Drake High School. In 2006 her friend Eleanor Harvey talked her into doing Marin Open Studios with her the next May. That spring she jumped in to preparing for open studios with a vengeance. Another friend said that original art doesn’t sell that readily, so she followed my mom’s lead and sought out having her art reproduced. She found Steve Kimball and Light Rain in San Rafael to make giclee reproductions of all her work. And she had greeting cards made from an offset printer. Open Studios brought an overwhelming response to her work inspiring her to paint more and search out other ways to show and sell her artwork.

This club consists of individuals who love to read the New Yorker Magazine and want to talk about it with other like-minded readers of the magazine. New Yorker articles, poetry, cartoons and other relevant materials are explored in this series of exciting two-hour gatherings.

Sessions are held on the first Monday of each month (except holidays when they are on the second Monday). Group discussion is facilitated by co-leaders: Dr. Bonnie Spiesberger of Belvedere and Florence Miner of Tiburon. While group discussions may be light or serious, the goal is for everyone to have fun and enjoy the lively interaction that flows from the exchange of ideas and comments.

If interested in participating, you may sign up for the New Yorker Magazine Readers' Club by emailing Deborah Mazzolini, Library Director at dmazzolini@bel-tib-lib.org or by stopping by or calling the Reference Desk at 789-2661. Please give us your contact information, including email.
