Contact: Library Reference Desk   789-2661   refdesk@bel-tib-lib.org

Reception Tuesday, April 15, 6-8 pm
Exhibit April 14-May 10 in the Founders Room

As a child, Kathleen Buckstaff spent hours playing in her great grandmother’s flower garden in Casa Grande, Arizona. Twenty years later, Kathleen’s grandmother insisted, “You’ve got to touch to love,” as she instructed Kathleen’s two-year-old daughter on how to touch a rose. Kathleen’s photographs share the wisdom of her mother and grandmothers—a love of beauty. Kathleen studied Photography and Creative Writing at Stanford. In addition to her work as a photographer, she is an author, a playwright, a performance artist and a columnist. She is a member of Women In Photography International and lives in Belvedere.

LinkedIn is a business-oriented social networking site mainly used for professional networking. It has 250+ million registered users, spanning 200 industries. The purpose of the site is to allow registered users to maintain a list of contact details of people they know and trust in business. The people in the list are called Connections. Users can invite anyone (whether a site user or not) to become a connection. It can then be used to find jobs, people and business opportunities recommended by someone in one's contact network. Librarian Heather Anne Lamb will help you explore LinkedIn, sign up and start your profile. Attendees should have prior experience using the internet, a web based email account and know their email password to sign in. Space is limited! Point Reyes Station: At 10:42 a.m. deputies called for back-up for a "pedestrian who was not following orders." So begins the short story, "Following Orders" in which we are introduced to the charmingly confused pedestrian, Fred Rhinehart, one of the magical characters author Susanna Solomon has conjured up for us in this collection of short stories, all set in Point Reyes, her scenic and lovely home town in northern California. Though the characters are fictitious, the author conceived of their adventures by pondering on actual Sheriff's Calls published in her favorite local newspaper, the Point Reyes Light.

Birds of Enchantment : Birding Puerto Rico
Speaker: Jaan Lepson

Puerto Rico is the smallest and easternmost of the Greater Antilles islands. Captured from Spain in 1898, Puerto Rico became a self-governing U. S. Commonwealth in 1952. The island blends traditional Latino-Caribbean and North American culture and, with its good infrastructure and widespread (though by no means universal) understanding of English, makes for an excellent introduction to birding in the Caribbean. Jaan visited Puerto Rico several times since 2007 and had the pleasure of working at the Rio Piedras campus of the University of Puerto Rico during the spring of 2012. His presentation will concentrate on birding in different habitats in Puerto Rico, along with a dash of the local flavor.

This month our regular drop-in volunteer day coincides with our annual Ring Mountain Thistle Pull! We’ll work together to ward off invasive tocolote, a feisty, nonnative plant that was once widespread, but is on the decline due to this annual event. Our efforts help protect many unique, native species, including the endangered Tiburon mariposa lily, a beautiful flower found only on Ring Mountain. We will also have the opportunity to listen to interpretive talks, and find out what’s in store for the future of this incredible preserve. Become a part of this habitat restoration success story! This is a moderately strenuous activity and is suitable for volunteers of all ages. Dress in layers, wear sturdy shoes, and bring water.
