Exhibit August 5- September 5 in the Founders Room

Fran graduated from Seattle University in 1958 with a B.A. degree in Education and has been a school teacher. She has been painting since the 1960’s. Some of her paintings hang in the homes of many friends from San Francisco, Portland and Seattle to Barcelona, Madrid, Hamburg and Marseilles, places where she has lived and painted in the past. . . their styles exemplify a changing perspective of colors and composition over the years. In the last 25 years, she has lived and painted in Spain, Italy, France and other European countries. The scenes which she has painted are ones of places which she visited and wished to commit to permanent memory… she specializes in oil and water color florals, landscapes and seascapes.

Buzz on By the Bay to the Gardeners Work Party for Pollinators!

The California Native Plant Society Marin Chapter (CNPS) is partnering with Richardson Bay Audubon (RBACS) to improve native pollinator habitat and create demonstration gardens the general public can replicate at home.

If you are looking for a good excuse to get your hands dirty and benefit the Center, Marin CNPS is working hard to improve our native demonstration pollinator gardens. Join CNPS and RBACS for regular monthly workdays on the first Thursday of the month at 10 am to help prepare the site for fall planting. Bring gloves, hat, sunscreen, any favorite gardening hand tools (although we do have some we can loan!) and a picnic lunch. Rain does cancel.

RSVPs appreciated but not required.

Running Time:  65 minutes
Country:  USA / Mexico
Genre:  Documentary
Director:  Bryce Newell

Description:  In the desolate borderlands of the American Southwest, hundreds of undocumented immigrants die every year while attempting to cross into the United States from Mexico. In response, volunteers are caching water supplies along the migratory trails and others are imagining cell phones running geo-poetic trail-finding software promising to lead migrants to water. Through the voices of those who have crossed, those who have failed, and those who are trying to prevent more deaths, a complex picture of the immigration crisis emerges.

Admission is FREE and open to the public

Condors and People: How We Live (or Die) Together
Speaker: Nicole Sault, Ph.D.

Description: While condors are once again flying over the California countryside, they are still endangered in both North and South America. Throughout the Americas they are threatened by habitat loss, hunting and poisoning. This presentation will provide an anthropological perspective on how a wide variety of people in the Andes view condors. The goal is to understand their different positions so that we can figure out how to best protect condors for future generations. Dr. Nicole Sault did fieldwork in Mexico in 1977, in Costa Rica in 1998, and in Peru in 2011. For 14 years she taught at Santa Clara University and then at the University of Costa Rica, in the graduate program in Anthropology. Andean condors have been the focus of her most recent research.

Masters of Fire: The Copper Age in the Holy Land
Masters of Fire focuses on the people of the southern Levant who harnessed the power of metallurgy during the fourth millennium BCE. Artisans produced extraordinary copper objects while other craftsmen molded pottery and stone into complex anthropomorphic burial containers, statuettes, and ritual objects. Taken together, these artifacts reveal the first stratified culture known in the ancient Near East. Highlights include a selection of material from the Nahal Mishmar hoard, an unprecedented collection of copper prestige and ritual objects, organic materials from the Cave of the Warrior, and an exceptional group of ritual figurines. In Samuel D. Hunter’s The Whale, we meet Charlie, a morbidly obese man trying desperately to reconnect with his estranged daughter after the loss of his boyfriend years ago caused Charlie to slowly eat himself to death. Everyone responds to loss differently, and while Charlie’s story may be an extreme example of how devastating loss can lead to self destructive behavior, it is also a story of loss leading to a renewed desire to connect with those you love. Before you come to the play, learn more about the work of this remarkable young playwright who eloquently captures a dying father trying to teach his daughter about empathy and understanding.

Educational components are included as we discuss the plants and animals that inhabit this unique place and explain how volunteer activities are having a positive impact. Join us for our monthly drop-in volunteer workday as we focus on restoring the grasslands of Ring Mountain! Ring Mountain is home to numerous rare and endangered plant species, but this habitat is being threatened by invasive species. Volunteer work may include weeding, seed collecting, tarping, fence construction, and/or installing native plants. Educational components are included as we discuss the plants and animals that inhabit this unique place and explain how volunteer activities are having a positive impact. Work is mildly strenuous and usually requires a short hike to the site. Drop-in days are held on the last Saturday of every month (except November and December) from 10am to 1pm. Dress in layers, wear sturdy shoes, and bring water. Questions: Contact Ring Mountain Stewardship Coordinator Sarah Minnick at (415) 473-5058 or SMinnick@marincounty.org.

From Hwy 101 in Corte Madera, take the exit for Tamalpais Dr east. Go straight onto San Clemente, which merges into Paradise Dr after 0.4 mile. Follow Paradise Dr approximately 1.7 miles, turn right onto Taylor Rd, and follow to end (dead end).

For more information contact Renee Fittinghoff with CNPS reneef94941@gmail.com or

Meet at the entrance gate across from address 49 Lomita Dr, near the intersection of Lomita Dr.and Greenfield Ct.

We are hosting a broom-busting pizza party and raffle on Horse Hill with The Alto Bowl Horseowners Association. Over the past 16 years we have pushed back invasive French and Scotch broom on this Open Space preserve. Now we need your help to make a final push into the broom frontier on the western part of the preserve. The work site is located approximately ¼-mile up, toward the top of the hill. We will pull broom and sow native grass seed. The work requires considerable strength and stamina but it is possible for volunteers as young as 5 years old to join if teamed with a parent or guardian. Some members of association will talk about their horses living on the preserve. Participants will get a chance to meet the horses up close.

Our partners at Richardson Bay Audubon Center have worked tirelessly to convert this 17-acre island from an eroding, unproductive, bay dredge dumpsite into prime shorebird and wildlife habitat. Join us as we team up with our friends at Audubon to help them in the enhancement process. Transportation to the island from the meeting place requires a 10-minute motor boat ride. RSVP required; due to the capacity of the boat, space is limited to 12 volunteers. Volunteer work involves bending, pulling, and kneeling. Dress in layers you can get dirty, wear sturdy shoes, and bring water. Questions or to RSVP: Contact Tori Bohlen at VBohlen@marincounty.org or the Marin County Parks volunteer office at (415) 473-3778.
