“The Greatest Generation Meets” is a monthly book group that meets on the third Friday of the month from 1:00-2:00 in the Thornton Room at the Brooks Free Library. “The Greatest Generation” is a term coined by Tom Brokaw that pays tribute to the men and women who served our country, both overseas and at home, during World War II. If you are a member of this generation, or are interested in this period of history, join our discussion and share your ideas and experiences. This month's selection is "A Good Place to Hide: how one French community saved thousands of lives during World War II" by Peter Grose. Pick up a copy of the book at the circulation desk. Harwich residents needing transportation should call the Council On Aging van at (508) 241-1566 by 11am the day before each Friday to make a reservation.

While not all classes will be messy, and there will always be smocks available, plan to wear play clothing. Older children are also welcome. Children do not need to come to every week of the program. The Friends of the Brooks Free Library "Books on Wheels” service provides free delivery of library materials to Harwich residents who are permanently or temporarily unable to visit the library due to illness, physical disability, lack of transportation, a caregiver of a homebound person, or any reason you're physically unable to get to the library. Join local artist, Heather Blume to learn the technique for making a hand-stitched Pamphlet Journal.All materials will be supplied at no cost to attendees. A native of Cape Cod, Heather Blume graduated with a BFA summa cum laude in Painting from the University of North Florida in 1992 and an MFA cum laude in Sculpture from the New York Academy of Art in 1994. She creates figurative drawings, paintings, and sculptures using various mediums. These metaphorical and archetypal works reflect her interest in and regard for the human condition. Blume’s work has been exhibited nationally in New York, Chicago, and San Francisco, as well as internationally in London, England, Paris, France, and Weimar, Germany. She is the recipient of several art awards and grants including a Florida State Grant, a Massachusetts Cultural Council Grant, and three Arts Foundation of Cape Cod Grants. Several of her works are included in the permanent collection of the British Museum and The Royal Coin Cabinet of Sweden in Stockholm. Participation is limited to 12 individuals. We will meet monthly to provide an opportunity to learn from each other, get advice on and share tools, techniques, and supplies, and to enjoy sociability while filling your albums with memories. Bring your own materials and photos and join us on the first Thursday of every month at 6PM. If you never scrapped before, bring your photos and scissors and a runner adhesive and we’ll help you get started. Card makers welcome to join us. Open to individuals 16 years of age and older.

Join local artist, Heather Blume for a workshop on mixed media collage. A native of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Hshe graduated with a BFA summa cum laude in Painting from the University of North Florida in 1992 and an MFA cum laude in Sculpture from the New York Academy of Art in 1994. Heather creates figurative drawings, paintings, and sculptures using various mediums. These metaphorical and archetypal works reflect her interest in and regard for the human condition. Blume’s work has been exhibited nationally in New York, Chicago, and San Francisco, as well as internationally in London, England, Paris, France, and Weimar, Germany. She is the recipient of several art awards and grants including a Florida State Grant, a Massachusetts Cultural Council Grant, and three Arts Foundation of Cape Cod Grants. Several of her works are included in the permanent collection of the British Museum and The Royal Coin Cabinet of Sweden in Stockholm. All materials will be supplied free of charge to participants. Feel free to bring ephemera or personal mementos such as ticket stubs, matchbook, etc. to add that personal touch to your artwork. Limited to 12 participants. “The Greatest Generation Meets” is a monthly book group that meets on the third Friday of the month from 1:00-2:00 in the Thornton Room at the Brooks Free Library. “The Greatest Generation” is a term coined by Tom Brokaw that pays tribute to the men and women who served our country, both overseas and at home, during World War II. If you are a member of this generation, or are interested in this period of history, join our discussion and share your ideas and experiences. This month's selection is "Killing Patton: the strange death of World War II's most audacious general" by Bill O'Reilly. Pick up a copy of the book at the circulation desk. Local author, Ingrid Stabins, will discuss her book: Give Me Tomorrow: A Young Girl's Ordeals During the WWII Russian Invasion Of Eastern Germany. Ingrid grew up in Pomerania, the eastern province of Germany. At the end of WWII she experienced the devastating invasion of the Russian forces, internment in a Russian camp and losing her homeland.  Her life was changed forever. She came to this country in 1956 and lived most of her life on Cape Cod.

If you are a member of this generation, or are interested in this period of history, join our discussion and share your ideas and experiences. This month's selection is "Miracles on the Water: the heroic survivors of a World War II U-boat attack" by Tom Nagorski. Pick up a copy of the book at the circulation desk. “The Greatest Generation Meets” is a monthly book group that meets on the third Friday of the month from 1:00-2:00 in the Thornton Room at the Brooks Free Library. “The Greatest Generation” is a term coined by Tom Brokaw that pays tribute to the men and women who served our country, both overseas and at home, during World War II. If you are a member of this generation, or are interested in this period of history, join our discussion and share your ideas and experiences. This month's selection is                             . Harwich residents needing transportation should call the Council On Aging van at (508) 241-1566 by 11am the day before each Friday to make a reservation.

The Friends of the Brooks Free Library "Books on Wheels” service provides free delivery of library materials to Harwich residents who are permanently or temporarily unable to visit the library due to illness, physical disability, lack of transportation, a caregiver of a homebound person, or any reason you're physically unable to get to the library. Delivery is on the second and fourth week of each month. Please phone the library at 508-430-7562 to learn more about this service.
