Fiction 101: Writers Workshop

Modeled after college level creative writing classes, we will explore multiple elements of short story and novel writing techniques. Among them will be The Nine Basic Plot Structures, Character Creation, Development of “Voice”, Editing, Publishing, and many more. As a class we will read and discuss contemporary and classical literature that pertains to the day’s topic, complete tailored writing prompts, and work through exercises designed to demonstrate these specific techniques. This class is designed for anyone with an interest in developing a strong foundation for their fiction writing or for experienced writers who are  looking for a refresher course on the basics. Ages thirteen and up. Registration is required.

10/3 The Nine Basic Plots

In this class we will discuss whether Booker’s claim that only seven (or nine) plots truly exist in literature and how to write with this belief in mind. This class will go into detail about the individual components that make up each of the nine plots and how you can use such a structure in your own writing.

10/31 Nuanced Plot structures.

Building off what we learned from the nine types of plots class, we will discuss how we can twist and manipulate established tropes to create nuanced approaches to plot. We will examine stories that exist outside of the core plots and discuss their structure and how to use similar structures in our own writing.

Fiction 101: Writers Workshop

Instructors: Gabrielle Griffis and Corey Farrenkopf

Where: Monday Nights in the Thornton Room at Brooks Free Library (in the basement)

Time: 7-8 o’clock

11/21 World Building as Demonstrated through the Lens of Science Fiction:

In this class we will discuss the importance of creating flawless worlds in your fiction, both Sci-fi/Fantasy and mainstream genres. Through guided exercises, we will explore what works well and what does not in the scheme of short and longer fiction. This class will also instruct on the pacing of world building and knowing when and where it is needed to make a work of fiction “natural” and/or “believable.”

“The Greatest Generation Meets” is a monthly book group that meets on the third Friday of the month from 1:00-2:00 in the Thornton Room at the Brooks Free Library. “The Greatest Generation” is a term coined by Tom Brokaw that pays tribute to the men and women who served our country, both overseas and at home, during World War II. If you are a member of this generation, or are interested in this period of history, join our discussion and share your ideas and experiences.

This month's selection is "(TITLE)" by (AUTHOR). Pick up a copy of the book at the Circulation Desk. Harwich residents needing transportation should call the Council on Aging van at (508) 241-1566 by 11am the day before each Friday to make a reservation.

The Literary Diners group reads books that have food or restaurants as a focus or are memoirs about  chefs, food critics or important people in the food industry, While the book usually gets mentioned many times in discussion, the group is more of a social group than a structured book discussion group. Members bring a potluck dish to share that may relate to what was read or whatever is easiest if your schedule doesn't allow for cooking. There is no plan for who brings what, we eat whatever dishes are brought. The majority of the time it has worked out that we have a fully balanced meal. Members are also asked to bring a full place setting for themselves.
