    Contact: Suzanne Martell   (508) 430-7562 x 4   smartell@clamsnet.org
In 1904, New York financier August Belmont bought the 1899 Canal Charter and the Boston, Cape Cod & New York Canal Co. that owned it with grand plans to build a seven and a half mile canal across the Isthmus of Cape Cod. When construction started in 1909, a portion of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad, partly in the way of the project, had to relocated at great expense, as well as constructing a railroad drawbridge across the water at Buzzards Bay. During construction of the canal, a temporary, narrow gauge railroad was built to help haul away solid material for the canal. Twenty-six dredges, a half dozen giant steam shovels, the little railroad, and hundreds of laborers toiled for almost five years until the grand opening on July 29, 1914.
