misc_none 2018 Cartwheel Book Awards Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Mr. Steve   508-966-1660   sfowler@cwmars.org

Are you between the ages of 9-12? Do you love to read books? Do you want your voice heard? Then we are looking for you for to be a committee member for our very own Cartwheel Book Awards! This is the 5th year of the Cartwheel Book Awards, which is the Bellingham Library's version of the Kids' Choice Awards for Middle Grade Fiction.

During the course of this calendar year, committee members will read the same ten books, which are selected by Mr. Steve and are published between May 2016 and April 2017. The books are selected for written quality, kid appeal, and genre diversity. After the committee member has read each of the ten books, s/he can vote for his/her choices in six categories: Best Written, Favorite Book Cover, Favorite Male Character, Favorite Female Character, Best Ending, and Favorite Book.

At the end of 2017, we will tally up the votes and contact the authors who won to ask them to send in acceptance speeches (many authors send in thank you videos). In late January or February 2018, all the committee members and their families will attend the awards ceremony where the kids will reveal the winners in each category and get to see the authors' responses! A local producer videotapes the awards night and edits it into a tv show to preserve the memories of the evening.

Please register for more information and the list of book titles.

For ages 0-18 months and their caretakers. Babygarten believes that reading to babies is one of the most important components of child-rearing; it can contribute to virtually every aspect of growth and development. Most important, however, is the emotional bond that is nurtured by a reading ritual. Babygarten is an educational curriculum for caregivers and their babies from birth to toddlerhood. The classes teach parents how and why to read to babies. The classes involve songs, rhymes and activities that help babies with language acquisition and preliteracy skills. Please register one time for this six week class.

misc_none 6:30 PM  -  8:00 PM Welcome to the Graveyard with the Gravestone Girls Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

This adult oriented presentation is about New England cemetery art, history and symbolism in a 90-minute PowerPoint format. The "virtual tour" takes us from colonial burial grounds, through the rural cemetery movement of the 19th century and into 21st century locations. It examines why we have cemeteries and gravestones, why they look like they do and how styles and art have evolved over almost 400 years. Prior to the show date, the Gravestone Girls will hit the road and go through the cemeteries in Bellingham, taking pictures for use in building the presentation and using as much local content as possible. The Gravestone Girls have tailored this presentation for many different towns and groups, presenting to historical societies, genealogy groups, libraries and others for over 15 years. Space is limited so please register.

This program is sponsored by a grant from the Bellingham Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

        There are 77 spaces available.

The classes involve songs, rhymes and activities that help babies with language acquisition and preliteracy skills. holiday_wreath 6:00 PM  -  7:30 PM Holiday Wreath Making Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Don't toss away those old holiday tree decorations or wreath! Give them new life by using them to make an upcycled holiday wreath with crafter Ana Mendes. Space is limited so registration is a must. This is an adult class. A hot glue gun will be used. Here are ideas on what to bring to class that can/will be re-purposed:

Tinsel (metallic) garland, artificial greens/artificial garland (soft ones used for wrapping around stair bannisters), artificial green wreath, round ball ornaments (unbreakable,) small holiday pins, small and unbreakable tree ornaments, cookie cutters. Holiday ribbons in assorted colors, prints and sizes. Holiday themed print or winter scarves. Holiday themed fabric cut into long strips or solid red, solid green and/or solid white fabric cut into long strips. Plaid flannel scraps from flannel shirts, red and/or green yarn, red and/or white yarn, wire coat hanger (if you'd like to make a round ball ornament wreath) as well as round ball ornaments. White or colored snowflake ornaments, holiday bows in assorted colors and sizes, sink poinsettias, artificial red berries/holly. Red, white and green pom poms.

Please do not bring anything fragile/breakable. Bring only items you are comfortable using for a new purpose. Let's take these old, unusued decorations and make something new!

This program is part of the Bellingham Library's participation in "Make Public Libraries Science Resource Centers in their Communities," an Institute of Museum and Library Services Grant Program administered through Cornerstones of Science.

Registration will begin on Monday, October 30, 2017 at 12:01 AM
