misc_none 2018 Cartwheel Book Awards Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Mr. Steve   508-966-1660   sfowler@cwmars.org

Are you between the ages of 9-12? Do you love to read books? Do you want your voice heard? Then we are looking for you for to be a committee member for our very own Cartwheel Book Awards! This is the 5th year of the Cartwheel Book Awards, which is the Bellingham Library's version of the Kids' Choice Awards for Middle Grade Fiction.

During the course of this calendar year, committee members will read the same ten books, which are selected by Mr. Steve and are published between May 2016 and April 2017. The books are selected for written quality, kid appeal, and genre diversity. After the committee member has read each of the ten books, s/he can vote for his/her choices in six categories: Best Written, Favorite Book Cover, Favorite Male Character, Favorite Female Character, Best Ending, and Favorite Book.

At the end of 2017, we will tally up the votes and contact the authors who won to ask them to send in acceptance speeches (many authors send in thank you videos). In late January or February 2018, all the committee members and their families will attend the awards ceremony where the kids will reveal the winners in each category and get to see the authors' responses! A local producer videotapes the awards night and edits it into a tv show to preserve the memories of the evening.

Please register for more information and the list of book titles.

Founded by songwriting duo Mark Mandeville and Rianne Richards, the 8th Annual Massachusetts Walking Tour will be coming this year to the Blackstone Valley, performing 10 free community concerts while traversing the state on foot.  The musicians actually walk with their instruments and camping gear from town to town, performing concerts after 8-13 miles of hiking roads and trailways. The Massachusetts Walking Troupe, including veteran members Mark Kilianski (guitar, banjo) and Amy Alvey (fiddle), will be hiking from concert to concert using the Blackstone Valley's many recreational trails. The Bellingham Library is pleased that it has been chosen as one of their concert venues. This concert will be held in the Bellingham Library's community room, and is suitable for all ages.  Please register.

In addition to evening concerts, the troupe will also be organizing a series of short group hikes wherein the community will be invited to meet up with the Massachusetts Walking Tour as they travel between towns. For more information on the walking tour events please visit www.masswalkingtour.org.

anim_fish_02 7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Freshwater Fish of New England and Restoring Our Local Watershed Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

This photography based program by presenter Bob Michelson will look at all of the freshwater fish of New England underwater in their natural habitat, including the spawning behaviors and life cycles of popular fish species including Eastern Brook Trout and Smallmouth Bass. Other fish that will be covered include: Pumpkinseed, Bluegill, Largemouth Bass, Chain Pickerel, Crappy, Rock Bass, and more.

In addition, we will present the concept of what is a watershed; how they relate to healthy fish populations; what we can do to restore rivers, streams, lakes and ponds that all make up our local watershed. We will also discuss what participants can do to help improve their environment. This includes reducing non-point source pollutants such as pet waste, lawn fertilizer, pesticides, and something as simple as not washing your car with detergents near a storm drain. Please register.

misc_none 6:30 PM  -  8:00 PM Welcome to the Graveyard with the Gravestone Girls Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

This adult oriented presentation is about New England cemetery art, history and symbolism in a 90-minute PowerPoint format. The "virtual tour" takes us from colonial burial grounds, through the rural cemetery movement of the 19th century and into 21st century locations. It examines why we have cemeteries and gravestones, why they look like they do and how styles and art have evolved over almost 400 years. Prior to the show date, the Gravestone Girls will hit the road and go through the cemeteries in Bellingham, taking pictures for use in building the presentation and using as much local content as possible. The Gravestone Girls have tailored this presentation for many different towns and groups, presenting to historical societies, genealogy groups, libraries and others for over 15 years. Registration has not yet begun.

This program is sponsored by a grant from the Bellingham Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
