misc_none 2018 Cartwheel Book Awards Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Mr. Steve   508-966-1660   sfowler@cwmars.org

Are you between the ages of 9-12? Do you love to read books? Do you want your voice heard? Then we are looking for you for to be a committee member for our very own Cartwheel Book Awards! This is the 5th year of the Cartwheel Book Awards, which is the Bellingham Library's version of the Kids' Choice Awards for Middle Grade Fiction.

During the course of this calendar year, committee members will read the same ten books, which are selected by Mr. Steve and are published between May 2016 and April 2017. The books are selected for written quality, kid appeal, and genre diversity. After the committee member has read each of the ten books, s/he can vote for his/her choices in six categories: Best Written, Favorite Book Cover, Favorite Male Character, Favorite Female Character, Best Ending, and Favorite Book.

At the end of 2017, we will tally up the votes and contact the authors who won to ask them to send in acceptance speeches (many authors send in thank you videos). In late January or February 2018, all the committee members and their families will attend the awards ceremony where the kids will reveal the winners in each category and get to see the authors' responses! A local producer videotapes the awards night and edits it into a tv show to preserve the memories of the evening.

Please register for more information and the list of book titles.

Come and hear Los Angeles-based national speaker Nicole Gardner present "Mind in the Making: the Seven Essential Life Skills Every Child Needs," a program of the Bezos Family Foundation (co-founded by Jackie and Mike Bezos, parents of Amazon.com founder and CEO Jeff Bezos.) Nicole is a Program Associate for Mind in the Making and Vroom. Mind in the Making is an unprecedented effort to share the science of children's learning and development with the general public, families, and the professionals who work with them. Nicole will bring the science of early learning to life through engaging content and video field trips to labs of leading researchers.

There will also be opportunity for discussion on how to put this research into action and time for Q&A. Participants will come away with resources, tools, and strategies that they can immediately begin using with the children in their lives. This program is made possible by a "Mind in the Making" Institute of Museum and Library Services grant through the Library Services and Technology Act. The book to be discussed is Plastic Purge: How to Use Less Plastic, Eat Better, Keep Toxins Out of Your Body, and Help Save the Sea Turtles by Michael SanClements. Books are available at the library for check out.

Library staff will also bring brochures with infomation about other upcoming events in the "Enlighten Bellingham" prorgram.  We are one of six libraries, three in Massachusetts and three in Maine, that, due to our science programming, were chosen as pilot libraries by the Maine State Library, the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners and Cornerstones of Science, a Maine nonprofit. The goal of the initiative is for the pilot libraries to create a field-tested, replicable  science literacy method that can be used to enable their public libraries to become skilled STEM facilitators. The project seeks to empower public libraries to build their science literacy capacity so that they can connect their communities to engaging and meaningful science and technology experiences, equipment, books, media and the scientific community.  We have chosen the topic of Environmental Literacy and will be offering programs on Alternative Energy, Recycling and Water Resources.

This book talk and the book discussions are part of the library's participation in "Make Public Libraries Science Resource Centers in their Communities," an Institute of Museum and Library Services Grant Program administered through Cornerstones of Science.

For pre-walking babies and their caretakers. Babygarten believes that reading to babies is one of the most important components of child-rearing; it can contribute to virtually every aspect of growth and development. Most important, however, is the emotional bond that is nurtured by a reading ritual. Babygarten is an educational curriculum for caregivers and their babies from birth to toddlerhood. The classes teach parents how and why to read to babies. The classes involve songs, rhymes and activities that help babies with language acquisition and preliteracy skills. Please register one time for this six week class.

For Families. Please register.

The Recycled Rhythm Program was designed for an elementary school audience and for library programs.

While sharing that "everyone can make a difference" through respect for one-self, for others and respect for this planet, Vicki and Sticks promote a message of kindness.
By singing about the three "R's"...reduce, reuse, recycle...the Recycled Rhythm Program also talks about how recycling helps the world around us. Children also learn through this program that the best place to practice "reuse" is at their neighborhood library.

The music show is fast-paced and encourages audience participation, as the children in the audience become part of the Recycled Rhythm Band!

Please register one time for this six week class.

anim_fish_02 7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Freshwater Fish of New England and Restoring Our Local Watershed Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

This photography based program by presenter Bob Michelson will look at all of the freshwater fish of New England underwater in their natural habitat, including the spawning behaviors and life cycles of popular fish species including Eastern Brook Trout and Smallmouth Bass. Other fish that will be covered include: Pumpkinseed, Bluegill, Largemouth Bass, Chain Pickerel, Crappy, Rock Bass, and more.

misc_none 6:30 PM  -  8:00 PM Welcome to the Graveyard with the Gravestone Girls Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

This adult oriented presentation is about New England cemetery art, history and symbolism in a 90-minute PowerPoint format. The "virtual tour" takes us from colonial burial grounds, through the rural cemetery movement of the 19th century and into 21st century locations. It examines why we have cemeteries and gravestones, why they look like they do and how styles and art have evolved over almost 400 years. Prior to the show date, the Gravestone Girls will hit the road and go through the cemeteries in Bellingham, taking pictures for use in building the presentation and using as much local content as possible. The Gravestone Girls have tailored this presentation for many different towns and groups, presenting to historical societies, genealogy groups, libraries and others for over 15 years. Registration has not yet begun.

This program is sponsored by a grant from the Bellingham Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
