lib_bookflipping Read-A-Thon Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Mr. Steve   508-966-1660   sfowler@cwmars.org

Do you like to read and do you want to help the Friends of the Bellingham Library raise money for youth library programs and services? If so, join our Read-a-Thon team!

The challenge: Find people to sponsor you to read 30 minutes every day for the 10 days of April Vacation (from April 18-April 27). Perhaps you want to find ten different sponsors - one for each day you read during the challenge. There is no minimum amount of sponsors or money raised. Every little bit helps!

An additional fun spin to the challenge: On seven of your ten reading days, you will be asked to read in a certain place or a certain way - for example, upside down or under the covers. You can capture these moments on camera and share them with us!

If you are interested in joining: Please register the child's name by clicking the button below. You will then be sent information via email, including your child's "fundraising page" where people can sponsor him or her using a debit or credit card. It's simple fundraising - no need to go door to door and no need to handle money.

All ages are welcome to participate - books read out loud to pre-readers count too!

        There are many spaces available.

Contact: Tony Calcia, Hockomock Area YMCA   508.643.5226   TonyC@HOCKYMCA.ORG

The Bellingham Library working in collaboration with the Hockomock Area YMCA would like to invite you to a Stewards of Children training on the issue of child sexual abuse prevention.  The meeting will be held on Monday, May 5, 2014 at the Bellingham Public Library from 6-8 pm. You must register at the link below.

Stewards of Children is a two hour workshop designed to educate adults on how to recognize, prevent and react responsibly to the reality of child sexual abuse. It emphasizes child safety as an adult's responsibility. The training facilitates discussion about the incidence and consequence of abuse and provides information about child protection policies and mandates.  The program is designed for organizations that serve youth and for individuals concerned about the safety of children.  It is the only nationally distributed, evidence based program proven to increase knowledge, improve attitudes and change child protective behaviors.

The training was developed by Darkness to Light, a national nonprofit organization whose singular mission to empower adults to prevent child sexual abuse.  Their goal is to raise awareness of the prevalence and consequences of child sexual abuse by educating adults about the steps they can take to prevent, recognize and react responsibly.

Today’s headlines underscore the need for communities like ours to raise awareness and create prevention programs to stop future abuses.  Chile sexual abuse is an issue that affects everyone, not just those that were abused and their family members.  Studies have shown that 1 in 10 children will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday!!   It is vital that parents, teachers, coaches and all citizens reinforce the message that sexual abuse of children is a preventable crime that we can all take part in stopping.

Children are our future, we must protect their childhood.

Join us for an introduction to 3D Printing with our Cube 3D Printer and Sense Scanner.  Learn about 3D Printing and see our printer (and NEW Sense Scanner) in action. Come and see the library's new Cube 3D Printer in action and learn about its basic operation. This workshop will cover an introduction to 3D printing and a demonstration to the group about the printer operation instructions. This class is limited to 8 people, high school age and above.

This class will not cover designing a 3D object to print. It will focus on the details of printing predesigned objects and objects that can be scanned with our new 3D Sense Scanner. People interested in designing their own objects for printing need to provide .stl files formatted for PLA printing. The library does have software available for designing these files and we hope to offer training sessions on its use at sometime in the future.

Make plans to join us for the second installment of “Show & Tell: Bellingham, MA"  Bring an object, a photo or just yourself. While not an opportunity to self-promote your business, these events lend themselves to great conversations between participants!

It’s Show & Tell for Grownups (Like in elementary school, but without the gerbils, we hope!) Sponsored by the Bellingham Public Library, the Association of Personal Historians, and hosted by Marjorie Turner Hollman, the library was the first venue in the Boston area to host this type of event, and part of a series taking place all over the country and even internationally. Remember that old letter you read time and again because it makes you feel so good, or the one that your parents wrote to one another during the war? How about the photo of your grandparents that inspires you every time you feel blue? Or that diploma that reminds you of how far you’ve come? Bring an article of clothing, a painting, jewelry, book or any other sentimental object that has a story to show and to tell.

You don’t have to show and tell, you can just look and listen. Come for the whole event, or just pop in for a little while. Bring your friends and learn more about their lives!  Read about the Brooklyn event, written up recently in the Wall Street Journal: http://blogs.wsj.com/metropolis/2014/01/17/a-show-and-tell-for-adults-in-brooklyn

6 consecutive Tuesdays, starting May 13th from 8:30 to 10 am.
Class instructor:  Patricia Spencer, Bellingham resident, teaching at Time for You Yoga, Cumberland, RI.

Pat is a fully insured Certified Svaroopa® Yoga Basics Teacher with more than 400 hours of training, and is a RYT at the 200 hour level.  She is also a Certified Embodyment® Yoga Therapist. Svaroopa® Yoga is a unique and transformational style of Hatha yoga which specializes in alleviating pain (especially back pain) and cultivating a quiet mind and peaceful spirit.  Each 90 minute class begins and ends with deep relaxation and body awareness.  Each pose is carefully aligned and supported with props – blankets, blocks, chairs – and can be modified to address each individual student’s needs.   Class size is small (no more than eight) so each student receives individual attention and is monitored in every pose.  By transforming your body, Svaroopa® yoga changes the quality of your mind and emotions.

You must be 18 or older and in generally good health to attend this beginning class.  Please wear loose comfortable fitting clothing and you do not need to bring a yoga mat.  Attendees will be required to sign a liability release form prior to the class.   Please register the name of each person who will be attending.

Pat has requested that attendees be encouraged to make a donation to the Friends of the Bellingham Library.  There will be a donation jar in the back of the room at this class for those who wish to do so.

    Location: Community Room
        There are 8 spaces available.
