Being a beat reporter used to be a good time. Now it is truly a 24-7 full-time job, thanks to social media. Kent McDill got into the business before laptop computers and got out when Twitter became more important than the morning newspaper.
He weaves tales of his time covering the high school and college sports in Indiana for United Press International, the Chicago Bears and Chicago Bulls for the Daily Herald, and the Bulls again for nba.com. So his career went from a wire service to a daily newspaper to a website, and he recalls the changes that occurred along the way.
