misc_none 6:30 PM World in Your Library Lecture Series #1 Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
Eric Hooglund, a Maine native, is professor emeritus of Middle East Studies at Lund University in Sweden, an internationally recognized scholar of contemporary Iran, and editor of the journal Middle East Critique. During a 40-year academic career, he has taught about the culture, international relations, and politics of the Middle East at colleges in Asia, Europe and the United States, including Oxford University and both Bates and Bowdoin in Maine. He is the author or editor of 7 books and more than 100 scholarly articles. He currently resides in Belgrade Lakes.

“The Middle East in Down East: Waterville, 1900-1960” - In the early 20th century, the small central Maine city of Waterville was home to one of the largest Middle East ethnic communities in the United States. This presentation focuses on the history of the immigration of ethnic Arabs to Waterville from Lebanon, which was part of the Ottoman Empire's province of Syria from 1517 to 1918. The community was well established in Waterville by 1914, attracted there by the availability of work in the city's several textile and paper products mills. The examination of the early history will focus on: the immigrants' residential neighborhoods; the creation of religious and social institutions to help pass along to the immigrants' 1,000+ Waterville-born children their unique customs and traditions; the community's emphasis on education, which enabled an unusually high percentage of the first generation of 'Lebanese-Americans'—who were graduating from high school during the 1930s and 1940s—to create businesses or find professional employment; and the impact of the closing of the textile mills during the 1950s on Waterville generally and the Lebanese community specifically.

Scott Erb is a professor of Political Science at the University of Maine at Farmington, specializing in international relations, foreign policy, and the European Union. Scott earned his PhD from the University of Minnesota in 1994 and has been at UMF since 1996. Scott's research focus is on Germany and the EU, and he has published a book: German Foreign Policy: Navigating a New Era (2003). His current research project involves investigating how the European Union can be a model for politics in the era of globalization.

“Oil, Islam, and the Arab Spring” - Americans are perplexed by the changes taking place in the Mideast, the growth of political Islam, and our dependency on oil. Yet these issues promise to become even more important in coming years, and will require a rethinking of US foreign and economic policy.
