Pamela Weeks, Curator of the New England Quilt Museum, will be continuing “May – Civil War Month at the Boxford Town Library,” with a presentation of “Quilts of the Civil War.”
A quilter, fiber artist, historian, and juried member of the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, Pam has turned her passion into her life’s work. In addition to her curatorial position, she is a philanthropist and author.
For eight years Pam was director of ABC Quilts in Northwood, NH. ABCQ’s worldwide mission, … to send handmade quilts to babies and young children born HIV positive or drug affected.
Her 2012 book, “Civil War Quilts,” (a collaboration with Don Beld), has been hailed as being “essential to any serious quilter’s library.” It contains fourteen stories of Civil War quilts and their creators, as well as patterns, lessons on choosing the right fabrics, and 170 photographs.
Join us on May 18th, for tales of love, patriotic intrigue, struggle, survival, and the quilts that tell the stories. Go home infused with the aura of the 1860’s and well on your way to creating your own 19th century quilt.
This program is made possible by a grant from the Boxford Cultural Council, a local agency, sponsored by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

Sharon Wood, (Claremont, New Hampshire storyteller), will be continuing, “May – Civil War Month at the Boxford Town Library,” with a living history presentation “A Soldier’s Mother Tells Her Story.” This program is appropriate for age 10 and up, as it does address the subject of death in war.
Sharon will portray Betsey Phelps, a 19th century resident of Amherst, New Hampshire, whose son Charles died heroically at the Battle of Gettysburg. Sharon first wrote Mrs. Phelps’ story at the request of the Amherst Heritage Commission for the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Brick School in October of 2004. Since then, she has expanded her program to include the stories of other soldiers who fought in the war and the families who waited for their return.
Sharon and her husband, Steve, are members of the New Hampshire Storytelling Alliance, as well other professional organizations of storytellers and living history presenters. The 2009 recipient of the Gateway Award for Storytelling, Sharon has helped to produce storytelling festivals and living history cemetery walks. A retired librarian and former kindergarten teacher she is actively involved in acting in, and directing, local community theater groups. Visit Sharon and Steve at their website, http://his-story.atspace.com.

The Kitchen Garden - Herbs & Their Uses

Boxford landscape specialist Denise Galligan presents, “The Kitchen Garden – Herbs & Their Uses.” See, smell and taste living herb plants. Take home a new appreciation for, and information about, basic and more uncommon herbs, as well as recipes (some Gluten Free), to enjoy with your family and friends.
Denise awakened her passion for herbs when she began cooking in her teen years. Her later discovery of multiple food allergies among her immediate family deepened her research into “cooking without.” Cooking without transformed into “cooking with” …cooking with a myriad of common and uncommon herbs to add flavor and excitement to new food choices for skeptical relatives and friends.
Her romance with herbs led to extensive personal gardening, which blossomed into a new career in landscape and design. Now six years on her new path, Denise is the Chair of the Boxford Village Garden Club’s Horticultural Advisory Committee. A 12 year member of the Garden Club, she is also involved in other civic design projects, as well as ongoing garden and design study. In season, you can consult her at Paisley’s Farm and Greenhouses, which boasts one of the largest varieties of herb plants in the northeast.
