In honor of the Christopher Columbus holiday, Sons of Italy Christopher Columbus Lodge 216 will present Brockton Public Library with a gift of $500 in books and movies with Italian themes or created in Italy, October 4, 2016, at 6:30 p.m. in the Lingos Auditorium. Michael Lombardo, retired Brockton High School history teacher, will display his most recent research on Italians in Brockton.  The Lodge has also arranged for an author talk to be scheduled during this school year which will feature Journey from San Rocco by local author Rosalind A. Cuschera. The novel is based on the author’s family history, from 1918 to 2006 in which the widow accepts a marriage proposal, but can only bring one of her four children to America with her, while the other three must stay behind with relatives or in an orphanage. Nearly seventeen years pass before the family is reunited.  Copies will be made available for purchase and signing when this author talk is scheduled.

In keeping with the Brockton Public Library Book Group tradition, the next work to be discussed will be set abroad, so that the sense of travelling around the globe sampling diffferent cultures will be maintained. Rose Hotel is initially set in Iran where the author, Rahimeh Andalibian, describes the beauty of their luxurious surroundings, a hotel owned and run by her father.  After the 1979 revolution, the family flees to London and ultimately California. In the course of her memoir she must also come to grips with two brutal crimes: a rape and a murder, both of which involve her family. Familiar to many Americans is the conflicting feelings of adjustment to the modern and ever changing American way of life against traditional family values. Copies of this memoir are available at the Main Library Circulation Desk. New members are always welcome, and long time members returning from abroad are especially welcomed back!

Alice's Ordinary People, a documentary film, tells the story of a woman from Chicago who confronted injustice in her community by joining Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. in marches for fair housing, desegregation in Chicago Public Schools. She "made things happen" when she worked with Reverend Jesse Jackson, Dr. King, and  Reverend James Bevel to create Operation Breadbasket. She eventually took the leadership role in starting the  Political Education Division of Rainbow Push, ultimately adding thousands of voters to campaigns for Mayor Harold Washington, President Jimmy Carter, and President Barak Obama. Alice Tregay passed in 2015, but her legacy lives on in this film and in Chicago. Filmmaker, Craig Dudnick will answer questions after showing the film.Everyone is welcome!

Balto - Rated G - 71 Minutes

Based on a true story, Balto will touch your heart. Part husky/part wolf, Balto doesn't know where he belongs. He's an outcast in Alaska, except to his true friends - Boris, the Russian snow goose; polar bear cubs Muk and Luk; and the beautiful husky, Jenna. Even though he's different, all of Balto's friends recognize what he still can't see himself: his noble spirit. One day, a serious diptheria epidemic spreads fast among the children of Nome. When a fierce blizzard closes off all routes of transport, there's no way to obtain lifesaving medicine...unless a team of sled dogs can race six-hundred miles through the blinding Arctic storm and bring back anti-toxin. But when the dogs get lost in the frozen wilderness, only Balto can rescue the team and save the children. Balto is the remarkable tale of a hero who inspired a nation - and became a legend!animals, a rookie bunny cop and a cynical con artist fox must work together
